question on faction hostility

Post » Sat Oct 23, 2010 9:19 pm

hi i was just wondering whether it had been mentioned if wearing a certain factions equipment will make that factions enemies hostile to you like for example if i kill and loot some brotherhood or ceasers legion guys and take their armor and wear it going through ncr camps or the strip does would that make the ncr hostile to me?

i havnt found the answer to this on the wiki so im wondering if this has been mentioned here

as always thanks guys!

if you kill tons of casers legion members. they will probably hostile towards you.

if you kill one in the middle of nowhere probably not.

they have confirmed you can sneak into camps if you are wearing a disguise.

but people will figure it out quick if you talk to them

Yeah because in the demo I played, a Powder Ganger talked to me and said my half hearted disguise wouldn't fool him because he knew all of his jail buddies, and I wasn't one of them. As for the OP, that is a good question, and I'll try to find that out when I play at PAX today.

The October Issue of the Official Xbox mag (UK) does confirm that wearing armour will change what people will think of you.
"Your clothes affect your reputation within the world"

Mentions how the first sort of enemies you confront are the Powder Gangers, and that if you loot and wear their armour "NCR wont take kindly to you."

Also and interesting picture in this issue of the Shishkebab. (not sure whether this was known before.)

It's been confirmed in interviews, you walk into an NCR or CL camp wearing the opposing faction's gear, you're walking into a death trap. They'll shoot on sight.

I like this, But I have some concerns. Do Powder Gangers actually have a uniform? It seems like they would just wear normal rags. If they aren't very uniform and NCR just assumes you are a powder ganger because you're wearing regular clothes that you looted, that would be disappointing. Also, if you have a high enough reputation with a faction, they should just know that it's you unless you're wearing like a helmet or something, and just make comments about it.

Man, I really hope that I don't get screwed over for walking into an NCR base with Power Armor on
I guess if don't keep on the helmet they will recognize me but..... :/

Well in the mag it says "their robes" so I'm assuming they have something unique to themselves.
Interestingly it also says that if you wear them other Powder Gangers will become friendly towards you.

Yeah I hope they will recognise a loyal recruit in some odd clothing. I think they were just getting at the start of the game before we have much of a rep.

This is concerning. There's bound to be a glitch since there will be so many rep meters.

That might actually make things a little complicated. What if your best armor happens to belong to an opposing faction? Will wearing just the enemy armor with a different/friendly helmet or an enemy helmet with friendly armor identify you as an independent? So many problems could arise.

I thought they ran around in NCR prison clothes.

You know I expected that if you had a high enogh reputation with a faction they would recognize you on sight
but thinking about it, that'll probably be wrong if your fully equipped in an opposing faction's armor

This could cause problems but I'm excited about it. I always wondered why the Enclave shot me if I was wearing their armor. And why the BoS still talked to me like I'm one of them with my Enclave power armor on. I can't wait to use sneak and trick some CL to think I'm one of them. :whistling:

Both really valid points. Although I think the dev team have been putting quite a lot of stress into their new reputation system, so much so that it is definitely concrete to the game mechanics. I HOPE that will will be worked out, and worked out well.

Well in the article it also mentions "escaped convicts running riot in town [Primm]". And how if you are wearing the Powder Gangers "robes" these "convicts" will not take too kindly to you either.
I'm assuming these are NCR prisoners as isn't Primm barricaded by NCR?

When NCR attempted to expand east, they needed railways to carry supplies to distant locations, especially places ripe for colonization. For this task, NCR used criminals from their Black Canyon prison who were approaching the end of their sentences.

Powder Gangers are also escaped prisoners (sort of), unless they've rewritten that part.

Oh right. Perhaps they have.

Tbh this article really isn't that clearly written, being rather ambiguous...

However I really like the idea of having what you wear actually affecting your reputation; as what Lucky38 said, it was very strange how people really didn't care about full armour.

They have probably worked it out so when you have a high enough reputation with a faction the clothing difference is negligible. So if it is a better armour DT wise than your befriended faction it doesn't ruin it for you.

That's actually what I'm hoping for
If it isn't I just know I'm gonna forget to change armor when approaching a factions base

I hope the game doesn't really limit us to the armor we can wear. If we find a really cool piece of armor I don't want it to affect my rep with certain factions and I don't want factions dictating armor I wear. If I want to wear armor with more protection than my faction offers I should be able to.

Hahah, I can easilly see that happening to me as well.

I didn't personally, but a few of my friends on FO3 used to keep two outfits, their "Wasteland" outfit (Combat/ Power Armour) and their "town" outfit (Pre-War somethings).
Perhaps we will actually have to make use of this in NV.

i am worried about this too because im planning on killing a ceasers legionnaire as soon as i can because theyre armor is sweeeeeeet but im gonna side with the ncr on my first playthrough so im a wee bit worried i'll be cleaved, shot, speared, lasered, tazered and goo-ified as soon as i find an ncr recruitment office

That Legionnare is a spah!

Heh. I'm going to hear that in my head an awful lot. I can't wait to try to infiltrate. I wonder if we'll have a one-hit kill knife that only one-hits from behind?

You know thinking about it I wonder how they might react to certain NPC deaths
What I mean is if I'm disguised and say I pull a sneak attack on another member and kill him with one hit and no one sees me do it
would my cover be immediately blown and the rest become hostile or would nothing happen...........just something to ponder....

Sometimes I think that all of these new mechanics are going to come back and bite Obsidian in the buttocks. This poop is getting too complicated.

Well the one problem with NPC's being able to recognize that it's you wearing said opponents armour/clothing is that you have to get close enough for them to be able to see that it is you and before you do that the apparel you are wearing will be recognizable which will 'cause' them to react as if it's a bonafide member of said apparel's faction.
