Question for Bethesda on cut content and Fallout 4.

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 9:00 am

So as us modders dig deeper into your creation that is Fallout 4, finding audio/items that is from cut content, to even parts of the world as some spend wayyyy to much time exploring underwater.

My question is this are you going to try and used this cut content as paid DLC? Or are you going to leave it to us modders to put it back in?

Back in the day cut content that didn't make it at launch was patched back into the game later. The only company that seems to understand its audience these days is CD Project Red the Witcher 3 is a prime example of cut content that didn't make launch being put in at no cost to its audience. Between that them making so many side quest feel important, and pure content that is why they got Game of the Year. "Those saying what!?! when did this happen, when did cut content ever get put in as a patch!?! You need to be about 30-40+ plus years old to know what I am talking about when I say this happened back in the day. CD Project Red understands this concept of doing the right thing for its paying customers"

As awesome as Fallout 4 is I personally have over 700 hours put into it already. I feel like it is a step back in content and quest numbers prove that vs its seven year production time vs Skyrim quest number and how you take control of factions affecting the game world, as well as the repeatables that just become a lack luster announce from each faction. Lots of fetch quest that do not really feel like they have any real impact on the world we are playing in. I love the game, do not get me wrong, but was expecting a little more the guys at Obsidian even with the bugs of New Vegas really hit it out of the park. The Fallout 4 main quest was amazing, just the outcomes its like you are damned if you do and if you don't. Also the other thing is you and AMD need to have a sit down pow wow for AMD users using the new Fuji gpus that do not fall under the guidelines of utilizing gameworks with AMD gpus sharing architecture of the consoles gpus. The last thing is I hope you get with the console companies soon, many of your customers have been waiting for mod support for some time now. It cant be you do not have money, with all the side advertising in products from apparel/toys/consumables/art with how many copies of the game you guys are selling on all platforms.

Those are just my questions hope they will get answered, I love Fallout 4 if not I would had not put in over 700hrs, just a few things I am wondering about with cut content, and a little rant on quest that had seven years of production to take fruition. As well as a few other concerns that many are thinking.

Uh what? What games patched in cut content? Even old Bethesda games like Morrowind (which yea didn't get patches) didn't add in cut content into expansions or anything. I really can't think of any game that brought in cut content because not all cut content is removed because of time restraints, some are just scrapped after some assets were put into the game.

I think some of the content will be added in future patches, and some of it that was a huge concept might end up as a DLC. Pretty much every developer does this, it is no secret. Actually most of the free DLC for The Witcher 3 was made after the game released, and so it was not cut content. Also i believe its first Expansion is actually Cut content, or really well planned, i am leaning torwards the first point.

OF course companies always have a plan on a product its part of the marketing and all that thing. Being passionate with video games is one thing but those guys have sell to make.

Personnally since i first played fallout 3 being brought in video games by atari andstuff like doom and warcraft and windows 3.1, i cansay what make me buy beth's games are they awesome mod support aka creation kit a developper tool. Time change yes but they are one of the rare company that make literrally everyone able to make mods without any knowledge what so ever.

And yeah "back in the day" you would have game with 1/80000000000 of the content we have today so ... unless by "back in the day" you mean 3 years before fallout 4 ;-)

I just cant wait for creation kit preston just need to die. And mama murphy , oh and sturges, oh and..

Games always received patches. As soon as they started releasing them on floppy disks. You used to have to write or phone the companies then wait for the "fix disk" to arrive in the mail. While my earliest, really annoying, memory was Darklands (1992) receiving patch, after patch, after patch without fixing anything...I was already well versed in patching by then. I don't remember what game it was, but I remember sitting with my cousin on his computer much earlier than that (had to be the mid 1980's) trying to patch Might and Magic or Wizardy (some dungeon crawler).

Back in the day 80's and early 90's of gaming before many of the big companies went under for whatever reason. Yes Bethesda is the only one that gives full mod support to their games. I am talking about the past 30-40 years of pc gaming. Bethesda does make a good game like I said. I am also talking about even back to Dos days, from companies patching in factions they missed, quest, items they promised but didn't make the deadline. Some of the early 90's games had crazy content sadly those companies didn't stand the test of time when EA/Activision/Ubi-Soft got their claws into them. Glad T. Howard made his point on long development times because we would have no elder scrolls or fallout games today. I don't call 100 something quest ground breaking. Some are amazing yes, some not so much...

I feel you on Preston/Murphy/the scribe on the bos ship and the one in the arms room, to Pam and Car giving the endless quest... But public enemy number one goes to Preston hands down its why I gave him the generals uniform and hat... If you take the time to learn some of the new tools available you could make them killable right now actually by the way.

Dark yes but a smaller staff team, with a smaller budget, was able to do more with less, from size, quest, quality content that felt meaningful. Its not an elder scrolls or a fallout but they did win because of what they achieved in all aspects they set the new standard of the open world RPG thus they got game of the year. I am not even a huge Witcher fan at all... but you have to give credit where & when credit is due.

Why would you think you will get an answer OP?

That's not how it works.

If it's not in the game, it was for a reason.

If some elements will be reused, they will not be revealed now.

did they have a smaller staff team?

someone mentioned on here, that Fallout 4 was made by ~90 people, while Witcher 3 was made by ~300... I don't really have any sources about this and it would be interesting, if someone knows more about it

contentwise it's smaller than F4, isn't it? I barely know anyone who spent more than 200 hours with it and then there are dozens of people who spend 300+ hours with Fallout and Skyrim ^^

they've definitely set a new standard for making an interesting, well presented open world story with great characters... something that Bethesda was always lacking a bit

Nope smaller team, nor the budget that Fallout 4 got. Look at the quest, almost each side quest in each town/city/settlement in the Witcher 3 just on the bounty board there is at least 5-15 that show up, not to include random quest that can be found in each town/city/settlement and randomly in the world.

Fallout 4 has like what 100 something quest total, as a Bethesda fan I was expecting something to the magnitude of Skyrim though without DLC after a seven year production time. http://imgur.com/gallery/Mvc3i

Like if you take a peek at the audio files in Fallout 4 we should had gotten an option to take control of BOS how awesome would had that been to really change the outcome and give us the fuzzy feeling of not having to massacre one to two or even three factions, and then the under sea content. I think what happened is they got too side tracked on the underwater part of the game just trying to get it to work, time ran out and that was that. As well as adding other features into the game such as the pipboy app, and getting gameworks implemented and working on the console side of things. But that's just speculation.

not in game but in the game files it boils down to right vs wrong or really right vs greed on what will be done. I have learned one thing it never hurts to ask, sometimes you get answers, sometimes you can even change outcomes on what a company does. If you never try never speak up nothing changes.

They could've cut it for any number of reasons, no? I don't think it's fair to basically say they removed content which functioned perfectly just to be awkward. There could be a thousand and one reasons for removing the content, and to be honest, you can't complain about it coming up in a future DLC in which you - or I - have no idea what it is going to include.

Well i only remember windows 3.1 and stuff so 20 years before, i was too young to know whats before atari in fact i got my ass kicked if i played video games could only watch them. that was different than nowadays kids playing 18+ games but back on topic :)

You know fallout (first one) and stuff were made by small teams of guys who knew each other, created an engine from scratch etc... but what you have to think about is that bethesda with fallout 3 made interplay look like nothing with their sales.

I saw an interview with tim cain explaining that, basically he said that if you want to make a game you have to aim at most people as possible not only make an awesome game for old timers or hardcoe fans this will never happen because its shooting yourself in the foot commercially.

At least bethesda even if the creation kit is a way to massively increase sales of their games (just look at skyrim) it is awesome for us. I know that ME i can make fallout 4 the game i want it to be without having any knowledge in coding. I couldnt do that with doom or witcher. So its a win / win situation and a special relationship they developed between their fanbase and their company wich is an achievment by itself.

And yeah saw that by adding a line in fallout.in you can bypass all essential characters but i prefer wait for official CK .

Well in recent years doing the fast easy, has hurt sales big time on many AAA companies. But yes you have to aim your game at a huge wide audience from the casual to the young/old. But see like Bethesda with the charging for mods issue with valve they took a huge backlash on that one. Bethesda needs to deliver and do the right thing, because their audience pays attention, very closely the biggest part was the chunk Bethesda took from modders claiming all rights to that persons work, not paying a dime for power/hours worked/software used and no legal protection all the profits for Bethesda without any risk to themselves placing the modder with pennies on the dollar at risk.

They did deliver not saying they didn't, but there is the fact that remains that the content is there in the asset files of the game, from audio, to a weapon audio, content gets cut when they cannot make it work and run out of time. They have a choice, let the modders take care of it, do it and include it in a patch/free dlc or charge for it as a DLC.

No not talking about ini level talking about tools on the nexus made by the community, without the creation kit tons of mods that involve scripting have been made, from robot defense, elevators, tons of cool stuff, putting in the cut content of the harpoon gun that is missing animations so it looks a little funky. As for more or less the audio that is there is main story questline faction content the easiest way for a modder to finish that without going insane just dealing with scripting is to have access to the creation kit/geck whatever they decide to call it this go around modders will be like just better to wait than deal with that mess.

Of course they didn't cut out working content, content gets cut due to not being able to get it working correctly and running out of time. You kind of can the content is already there literally in the game files. You already paid for it, was supposed to be part of the 60 dollar price tag of a AAA game. But it falls onto Bethesda what they wish to do, patch it in/give it as a free dlc like CD Project Red does, or charge for it as a DLC. Its about doing what is right for your customers if they have made a huge chunk of profit for you by buying your product. If the company is financially strapped even after release and the content that was cut would put a company deeper in the hole if you put people to work to finish it then offer it free, that does happen and in those cases when the game is good, they are financially strapped in the hole, we should have no problem buying that cut content as DLC to keep them afloat so they can keep trying to make the games we love and hopefully get out of that bad financial stretch.

I would still argue against the opinion that 'amount of quests = content'

a huge part of Fallout and the Elder Scrolls games is the freedom, that you can go wherever you want, without someone telling you to do so

to have that freedom, they need to create a world, where every single location is unique and has something new to offer

there were some pictures, that really made me think about how much development time must have gone into this game

http://abload.de/img/3y4s2n.png

http://abload.de/img/4auso1.png

http://abload.de/img/579swi.png

barely someone will ever notice, when playing the game, how much work every single object must have taken

and how much they must have thought about every single piece of this world

I'd much rather take this over a big number of repetitive quests, such as 'get this sword out of that dwemer ruin'

simply exploring this world, without being bothered by quests, already provides way more content, than I could expierence in Skyrim

but that's once again an opinion :D some people want to have many quests, some are fine with just exploring and seeing the world

I just think Bethesda doesn't get enough justice for Fallout 4 ^^ it surely looks like they took their time and tried to do their best with the game

the amount of work you can see there, when looking beneath the surface, is crazy... and is barely measurable in the number of quests, you can do within the game

Oh dark defiantly as for the those assets my guess is 8-40hrs depending on that modelers skill set/software used. You can tell they put a lot of time in the world not arguing that one bit, I am a little disappointed in the Boston museum of science though, have been there many times as well as the Boston Aquarium, and the older historic section of the city where the witch trials took place. As for historic fun stuff the USS Constitution is funny and amazing at the same time have visited that ship many a times a long long time ago. I do love how much of the concept art from the late Adam Adamowicz was used in the game. Nice to see his art be made into reality at least in a game world. I love Fallout 4 like I said, but too many quest are well fetch or repeatables vs skyrim has way more content side quest/faction quest that feel important. I think Fallout 4 kind of wins in the rewards you get department but not fully since so much is available in that regards to skyrim. But I will say their rewards for doing quest in Fallout 4 is amazing, as well as items that are made available to you doing quest. If the Witcher 3 didn't come out last year, Bethesda would had probably won game of the year, but CD Project Red raised the bar in more ways than one. Just like Bethesda killed E3 with a bang and everything else felt meh after their big boom, if Fallout 4 had that full big boom that their E3 had we would had seen Fallout 4 as game of the year. Yes exploring is much more interesting in Fallout 4 than Skyrim, but that's only because I have been to and lived in Boston at one point in my life that's just my opinion in that subject to each their own. But always fun to see real world locations in a game and see what they can do with it.

But back on topic this post is more or less about asking Bethesda what it is going to do in terms of cut content, as well as some of my other questions and concerns that I am sure others are thinking. That is what we should all be asking them. Hopefully they answer, but there is no guarantee unless more people start asking, and just like the paid mods thing we can make a difference but if we don't ask well whatever happens will happen.

I friggin' remember the boot disks we had to make to get Ultima VII 1&2 working -- @#$%! Voodoo Memory Manager in it's @#$%! @#$%!.

I also never played through Darklands until almost 10 YEARS later -- and it STILL didn't work correctly at times. (Fun game, though.)

Not always. Cut content also consists of it not fitting properly with the rest of the game. The reason why certain scenes are cut from the film are also why certain portions of the game are cut.

Over seven years in development. and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. still has more depth if you exclude the minecraft "building" and borderlands "legendary" ripoffs.
