Question for my fellow PC gamers on SKYRIM.

Post » Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:48 pm

Personally, I will not hesitate to use unofficial patch/community bugfix and/or game performance enhancing mods and mod managing/editing utilities the instant they're available. Also I'd consider immediately using a higher resolution UI (such as DARN) if it were to prove useful to those of us with high res monitors the size of a wall.

Next, I'll get into higher resolution textures, but not before at least experiencing the majority of the game and seeing all the vanilla visuals.

Lastly I'll begin to incorporate additional content mods, but only after experiencing one full vanilla (more or less) playthrough beforehand.

OFC.

You need to play the whole game first to know what you need to mod.

I would definitely want to mod the consolified menus and get rid of or downsize the level increase pop-ups as soon as possible. Something to make it easy to see more of my inventory at once, as well as seeing all attributes of my weapons/items at once, rather than having to navigate multiple sub-menus and scroll and scroll and scroll.

Sure, it works great on an iphone, but i'm not using a touchscreen on a small surface, i'm using a mouse.

Of course I will do main story play-through without any mods... I want to experience bethesda's game.
Its not like anything that special out within the first week or two anyway.

I hope more for a complete UI theme overhaul, fonts included, to make it more "Skyrim-ish" and medievalistic. I've always though the iPod-theme just doesn't fit, no matter how "elegant" and "nice" it is.

I will leave the main game untouched for atleast 3 playthroughs..........though if I see a good texture pack or something that will improve the visuals, I will definitely get it.

i play every game vanilla at least once before i mod it. the only exception to that was oblivion because when bandits started showing up in glass and daedric armor i immiediatly put it down. level scaling was so horrible that i literally could not finish the game until a mod came out to fix it. i dont forsee any issues like that in skyrim (weightless food is no longer an issue to worry about) so i will have a few playthroughs vanilla. the only mods i would i would download immediately and play on first playthrough is boba fett armor, lightsabers, dwemer automatic crossbows and obviously spears. more than likely those wont be out immediately though.

Since i won't have the game until Christmas, i am hoping that there will be mods to get rid of all the markers in the game. I won't play it until the quest markers, location markers, and npc markers are disabled.

My first playthrough will probably last several months and there are a few small tweaks I will probably make myself or download soon after release of the Creation Kit.

For example, it is usually too easy to become wealthy in almost every RPG I've ever played, so I will make a small poverty mod that increases all merchant prices by 5x, reduces resale prices for stolen loot by 5x and reduces all other resale prices by 2x.

Also, after playing New Vegas with hardcoe mode and then installing survival/needs mods for Oblivion, I won't fully enjoy Skyrim as much without similar mods for hunger, thirst, hypothermia, sleep deprivation, etc., so I will install these as soon as excellent modders like Arwen and Duke Patrick complete something like this.

Other than that, it's very hard to say whether there is anything else I would tweak with mods until we get a chance to play the game.

there is a thread floating around that said that markers could be disabled in the menu. not sure about landmarks showing up on compass though but everything else is toggleable. :) that way people like us can disable them and people that couldnt find their way out of a closet can use them.

I'll load up and take a look and play for a bit. See what I like, what I can live with and adapt to and what I just feel is wrong or weak.

In Oblivion, things needed fixing right away on PC, like the menus. So I did that one day into it. Anything along those lines I will do ASAP. Subsequently Fallout and New Vegas were better menu wise, but I still followed that rule. And they still had issues to me.

Basically it depends on what is out there and what I feel needs tweaks. Once I buy it it is my game, if I feel something is wrong I will look to fix it. Since playing other games and downloading mods for them (Fallout, Oblivion, New vegas Morrowind), I do look for more people (crowded roads et all) and things that make the games more real. Even little things like Illuminated windows and the like. Makes a better looking game for me. Yeah nvde patch and more advlt mods if they are out. I prefer a more gritty real atmospheric game than they may provide, having to be safe and not offend people. Certainly anything bug or fix related I will look at.

Ben playing Bethesda games since Daggerfall, think they are one of the best companies out there, but they do make mistakes and/or drop the ball too. Luckily most mods fix that. So if it needs it, day one. If not, I will play through and see how it works during gameplay.

im with you on this one, buddy.
as soon as some mods come out i will check them out. if they improve the game for me than i'll use them.

personally im more into gameplay mods that might improve certain aspects of the game (if there are mods that allow blocking with DW or MW, stuff that add timed blocking or just improve mechanics i do not like), so if mods like these come out and indeed make positive changes i will thank the modder and use them as soon as i see em.
i have no need to play a game whose mechanics i do not like as is, if i can do something about it. why suffer if my 1st playthrough can already be better.

but mods that change things graphically i might no touch in case i will like the vanilla assets more. mods that look out of place or worse than vanilla quality wise i tend to ignore. if it break immersion than i usually dont use it. it needs to fit in and be on par with the overall quality of the game.

I'll probably use some minor mods (and graphics mods) on my first playthrough.

If I see something I don't like and find a mod that fixes it, I'll probably use it, but I'll save the bigger gamechangeing mods for later playthroughs.

I'm not even going to load the game. I'm going to open the Construction Set and think "okay, what did Bethesda screw up this time?"

Agreed with both your posts and immersion. Here's hoping there'll be tons of ruins and random relics laying around the gameworld. The place Todd went into with the two bandits looked great to explore. Also hoping there'll be more of a variety of creatures in the water this time compared to Oblivion.
Maybe even random things from the previous games i.e. the museum for those artifacts in MORROWIND.

It's almost sacrilege to mod a game before experienced the vanilla version. How can one appreciate a mod to the fullest if you haven't experience the need?

Well, if the UI is crap. That would be one reason.

Only necessary fixes to begin with, whether it be something as simple as field of view or bloodspatter.. or something I personally feel needs balance, like the durability of a certain weapon.

I'll almost certainly mod the config files from day one to maximize view distance etc...

A fairly complete playthrough before modding the game, but after that is done.
Bring em on. I love testing new mods. I usually have two installations of the
game I am playing. One for 'serious' playing, and one for just checking out
mods (and a third barebones installation as a backup for when you totally
FUBAR the checking out mod one).

But you have to try the crap first. You just can't foresee how crappy the UI would be if you don't experienced every nook and cranny of the UI.

Agreed and they mentioned the UI will be different for PC. If you still don't like it, again change it to whatever you like.

Which lore-friendly mods would mod users and makers like to see from Morrowind and Oblivion converted for Skyrim?

My main rule
1st playthought without mods (only exception may be GUI and HUD tweaking)
2nd character with heavy mods on
(besides there are almost no good mods when game just comes out anyway)

I'm hoping that they made the combat AI and mechanics more complex and interesting this time around, otherwise I will be moding my game asap. I havent finished an unmodded TES game since daggerfall because the stock combat has always been too simplstic for me and I lose interest about 30% into the main quest. Decent combat mods are the only way to fly imo. I'll probably wait for Duke Patrick to finish his combat mods before I upgrade my PC. Until then I will see how far I can get on the Xbox version.
