Question for networking people regarding the PS4

Post » Thu Feb 27, 2014 7:18 pm

I just got my PS4 two days ago and everything is great on it except for the download speeds. For some reason I am only getting between 1.5 Mbps and 3 Mbps. My internet (AT&T U-Verse) is rated at 12 Mbps. When I do a speed test on my PC I get an average of 10.5 Mbps and I even booted up the 'ol PS3 and managed 10.1 Mbps. A google search showed that this is not an uncommon problem with the PS4 and I was curious if this could possibly be hardware related (in which case I should RMA my current PS4 and get a different one) or if it has something to do with the software in which case I will just wait for an update. I am using the Motorola NVG510 router that came with my internet service. I have a slightly older router from D-Link that I might try using as well. I tried doing some port forwarding shenanigans but I do not know if I did it right because I know next to nothing about networking.

TL;DR - What could be causing PS4 networking slowness when every other machine on the network performs like a champ?

Is the PS4 connecting to your network via WiFi?

If you're using WiFi switch to a wired connection. The ps4 may be in a bad signal location or internal antennas may be blocked.

If it's a wired connection it could be the cable or router port, both of which you can test with a different device. The only other thing you can do that might make a difference is change the ps4 to use a different DNS server.

I'm not very savvy with this stuff, but I know with my last router I could set different machines with priority over others. The most recent additions would always be placed last so maybe this is your issue?

I did try changing the primary and secondary DNS to different values that I found during my internet searches but it didn't help a whole lot (if at all). I am on a WiFi connection so I will try plugging in a cable when I get home (in about 10 hours). From what I gathered on different forums people seemed to be having this problem regardless of wired or wireless connections. Would a new router even help at all?

According to various forum its a WiFi problem not wired. Whether its defective hardware or a firmware problem, I don't know.

I've only found one guy that had a problem with a wired connection so maybe he was having a different issue.

Here's what he said:

If a wired connection works I might just have to buy one of those powerline adapter kit things.

I would buy a wireless bridge instead, if its a WiFi hardware on the PS4. The bridge may be slightly more expensive, but the powerline may not work if the router is on a separate circuit from the outlet next to the PS4. Also with a bridge to could connect multiple WiFi devices through it. Many consoles have inferior wireless chipsets.

Many Wireless APs can be converted into a bridge, but a few manufacturers make pre-programmed bridges like Dlink and Linksys.

So could I take my older D-Link router and turn it into a bridge or does pre-programmed mean I wouldn't be able to?

EDIT: Maybe like http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=40856.0?

Yes, you should be able to make a wireless router into a wireless bridge, but configuring it may be time consuming.
