Depends on the mod, the pormo mods come out within a week, then bugfixes, then new items, then character revamps, then new quests and eventually gameplay overhauls.

It is often said that modders beat the original devs. How much truth to this is it and does it basically mean that a good "forum modder" can join Bethesda?

I won't open the CK on day one, because I want to play the game first and it's very easy to find spoilers of things you haven't done yet.

Unless there's this really small thing bugging me, I might jump in really quickly. :P

The maker of the popular Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul mod for Oblivion was hired by Obsidian to work on Fallout New Vegas.

i forget the guys name but apparently there was one VERY good modder that was brought in to help with skyrim. one thing to remember about mods....they've had most of the work done for them, they don't have to worry about the game engine or anything, just take what's already there and 'modify' it. so, of course mods will appear very quickly.

as for the xxx mods, yes there will be some that appear quickly. the people behind them pretty much already have the models/textures done. all they have to do it throw them into the creation kit, give the new npc some basic AI features and voila.

Most of the time modders build off of all of the work that Bethesda created. So I wouldn't necessarily say that modders beat Bethesda in general, but there are some modders that come along and create amazing things that are almost up to the quality of Bethesda.

Lets put it this way, if it weren't for Bethesda most modders wouldn't be creating things.

You don`t have to read that to know it. Just download an unofficial patch and see as thousands of bugs vanish away. Don`t see that when you apply an official patch.

The reason why modder patches are better than Dev patches is that... well, the Dev patches don`t fix that many things. They often ignore many smaller bugs and in some cases even the bigger ones. Modder patches target those things that Dev patches left untouched... which is most of the bugs.

Modders also have much more time available to work on even the tiniest bugfixes in the CK than Bethesda does for their patches. It costs money to put guys at work to fix the game, and patches don't bring in any extra money. So it makes sense Bethesda isn't going to spend endless time on grounding every single rock that's floating one inch above the ground.

(But the unofficial patches fix a lot of the more serious issues that Bethesda never fixed too)

:starwars:

Just like with Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3, there will be mods on the first day the editor is available. It will obviously not be major stuff, though.

When the Oblivion editor became available for download I finished my first mod after just a few minutes. It added some trees and that's it :P

It is often said that modders beat the original devs. How much truth to this is it and does it basically mean that a good "forum modder" can join Bethesda?

Modders have a lot of luxery that the original devs doesn't have, most noticeable the lack of deadlines and no hardware constraints. That said, I haven't really played any mod that I feel offer better quests than the ones found in the game. Most mods seem to be cosmetic changes or balancing already existing things.

Well I've allready started on the models and textures for my mods, But my computer broke 3 weeks ago so its on hold untill I get a new computer.

But Ill play for a few days maybe without modding to get into the game and start figuring things out.

"Beat" is maybe a subjective term. There are some modders that are quite competent, some become moderators here on the forums, while others become game developers and work for Bethesda (The author of OOO mod, Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, has done some work for Bethesda). Modding gives some experience with the gaming industry, and good mods can make big waves (like the overhaul to how Archery works in Skyrim is based on a mod for Oblivion).

As for your original question, there will be some mods that come out within a few days of release. These will mostly be small bug fixes, god mode mods/cheat mods, and maybe a simple few functionality changes (an http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34912 by me, I have no real experience with the GECK, but I released this 2 days after the PC version because it bugged me). Simple things like this will be out fairly soon, while bigger mods by the more dedicated professional individuals and teams will come out months or even years later (the large overhaul mods that make lots of rolling changes, additional content, ect, mostly)

"Almost up to?" I'd say there are more than a few modders who blow Bethesda's quality level right out of the water. Now to be fair, I'm not saying "better than anything Bethesda is capable of" but that the lack of deadline constraints gives them something of an advantage, as they never have to make the decision to stop improving something to meet a marketing department's deadline.

Well I live in The Netherlands so I doubt I could work for them. :P

But no, getting hired by a game company isn't why I mod. I just like doing it for myself and the community.

I like doing something creative, but I can't sing, dance, make music, draw, write a book, etc. so modding is my creative outlet. :D

Does not really matter where you live? well except if you do not want to move. Otherwise work distance.

true, but also you can learn those things if you want to, often getting good at one thing makes it easier getting good on something else, you have more in the luggage so to speak.

Nice to know that the gamers can still change the industry and are not following the companies blindly.
