RESOLVED by me

I have joined the Dawnguard in order to get Bran. I already did a couple of quests and have made it back to the castle, to where before I have to go recruit two people. I'm making that unclear due to spoilers but everyone who's done this will understand how far I am into the questline - pretty much at the beginning but I consider myself joined.

I talk to Bran and the other dog and cannot have them follow me.

I have Hearthfire - one child has one pet. The other does not. I know people have Bran and another pet but even if I had two at least I should be able to take him as a follower.

I have no follower right now.

I have completed the Daedric quest with Barbas.

Must I wait one or two more quests before I'm considered joined? Or is there something wrong? Thanks.

EDIT: Oh I FINALLLLY found it. Someone posted http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/615803-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/64109309 that it's several quests in. Looks like the recruiting ones do it for me. Thanks anyway!

Try doing more of the MQ for the Dawnguard.
