Question regarding Dremora Ranks

Post » Tue Mar 10, 2015 7:36 pm

  1. How accurate/sensical are the rank definitions http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Dremora?
  2. What rank definition would be given to the Feydnaz rank, and why don't they have the "kyn" affix?
  3. What rank would be equivalent to a VIP bodyguard role?

Thanks in advance.

1. What do you mean by that?

2. No idea, possibly some form of specialist rank, considering they only appear at the Great Gate maybe some form of siege-engineer. "Kyn" is part of the Dremora language and means "the people" with "kynaz" meaning "of the people".

3. Probably a Kynval or Kynreeve. Kynvals being the highest ranked "grunts" so to speak and the Kynreeves being the lowest officers and supposedly a police force.

UESP is pulling its ranks from http://www.imperial-library.info/content/varieties-daedra-0.

As far as I can tell, that "Feydnaz" is a unique type. Probably something specific to the Great Gate operation, rather than a generic Dremora rank. I'd say the Kynmarcher rank would be most appropriate to an elite bodyguard, but they might also have a specific term for that.

Thanks for the information. I'm thinking I'll go with Kynreeves being led by a Kynmarcher for a bodyguard unit.

I'm wondering if the Feydnaz are of a lower caste level, along the lines of the Churls and the Caitiffs, both of which also lack the "kyn" affix and are considered low-ranking. Yet the Feydnaz are also given the responsibility of overseeing the Great Gate and the World Breakers, so they're clearly distinguished warriors. Maybe they're similar to the Arbiters in the Halo series: formerly high-caste level individuals who've committed some sort of dishonor that stripped them of their high rank, but their combat prowess is too valuable to waste so they're instead assigned to high fatality rate missions.

The http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dremora also mentions two more rankings: Narkynaz and Kyngald. A quick search reveals that they are new rankings added by ESO.

A interesting interpretation, though I wouldn't necessarily count the Feydnaz out as a lower rank because the title lacks "kyn."

Of the dremora language we know very little; but we do know that "kyn" means "the people" and that "kynaz" means "he of the people." Meanwhile "naz" or "az" simply seems to determine that we use the adjectival form of a word. Perhaps his title simply means "he of the gate" and isn't actually a real full caste. Just a job title.
