question on settlements : Fallout 4

Can we build settlements anywhere? or are there certain designated places that you can start building a settlement? Also does anybody know if you can build more than one settlement? sorry i know theres alot of questions on settlements but didnt see any regarding these questions

To quote Todd Howard "You can even run Brahmin Caravan between your Settlements." Settlements, plural.

The impresion I get is that you must "trigger" built mode by using a workbench and I assume you cant stray to far from it, so yeah I think we are limited where we can build.

I'm pretty sure Howard mentioned that there were only specific areas that allow you to build.

One build location will probably be your old street.

I'd take a guess at 4 settlements max.
