A question to the tight new followers of Skyrim.

Post » Sun Jul 18, 2010 5:17 am

EDIT: its supposed to say in title "news" not "new"

Well, I was googling hours for whats confirmed and what is not. Ive seen that some italian magazine confirmed quest markers -http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1163214-skyrim-italian-coverage-thread-2/
And ive seen that some french magazine has confirmed "asking for directions to quests" is in- http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/52479/t1615524-more-magazine-info/

I kind of doubt in both information sources (SINCE THEY WERE BOTH MADE IN A LAND OF pvssyS! just kidding my mom is frnech :P) because Im still seeing alot of people wondering if quest markers are in or not. And if asking for directions is confirmed or not...

So if anyone can really confirm that for me for the final time, ill be glad and thanksful :)

Edit: I really want this information. Mainly because im more morrowind type of guy, and I want to know if the quest marker is just optional or not. I really want to be able traveling while not mindlessly following a marker.

Quest markers are in. Wouldn't really make sense if they didnt include any.

It's safe to say quest markers are in.

Maybe in... maybe not.

There are better directions now. Sometimes the NPCs literally guide you as well.

Bigger question is, if they are in, will they be togglable? I think they absolutely definitely should be togglable, as it's such an intrusive thing in the gameplay. Some people actually want to think, and, like you said, not mindlessly follow an arrow on a magic compass. I'm not a robot!

Plus, actually making it togglable would most likely be something that a dev could do on an afternoon or something. Should be a very simple and easy task for the developers.

Quest markers weren't optional before: They were forced in the game and you sometimes couldn't do the quests without them. The quests were designed in mind of the quest markers. The quests assumed us to use quest markers. If quest markers are in without any way to toggle them, it's very probable to think that the quests are designed to work only with quest markers. Plus, if you only have one quest, you can't switch quests.

In short, quest markers were never optional before, and if they follow the same line as before, they won't be in Skyrim either.

A little offtopic here but i do hope you can toggle the marker on or off, but as for ontopic, i'm sure they will have markers.

Unfortunately, what you've found is pretty much the state of our current knowledge of it. It appears that quest markers are in and it's been claimed that NPCs will give directions. We have no idea how extensive those directions will be and whether or not they'll actually serve to make the quest markers a secondary source of information rather than the primary one. I would hope, after the storm over the pretty straightforward stupidity of using quest markers in Oblivion as a substitute for in-game information instead of in addition to it, they won't make that same mistake again, but....

Nah, not 1 afternoon :P
I mean, if its toggelable they wont make something like "ok. You have toggled your marker of.. lol! HAVE FUN TRYING TO FIND THE QUEST WITHOUT DIRECTIONS!"

If its toggelable, they should make an whole new system other than the quest marker for finding quests(getting guide from people, buying treasure maps, etc). This... takes time

We can guess the answer to that from past experiences, I say it's about 80% not togglable... Let's face it, we'll have to have mods take it out, though I prefer the game without it too.

Yeah and that's my point. It seems to me that (hopefully) Skyrim has better directions now. With that on a basis and as a foundation for the game, unrelated to quest markers, it should work to just disable quest markers.

I wouldn't say that so quickly :P
I mean, we got carriages right?
Also, in Fallout 3, there was an .ini setting to disable quest markers (good for the PCs, bad for the consoles). This didn't exist in Oblivion.

Just as pressing as the state of the quest-marker existence is those friggin' "unvisited point of interest" markers on the compass. Boy, I somewhat can understand why they put that in Oblivion, where exploring every nook and crannies of the bland and boring hills (or should I say, mounds?) of Cyrodiil could be a pain the behind, but for the mountainous terrains and supposedly more intricate landscapes of Skyrim, those things really should be gone.

Agreed. I don't like compass icons. Killed the enjoyment of ever being able to find a hidden dungeon or something, in other words - killed the feeling of exploration. I loved that in Morrowind.
It's like with artifacts; some should be hidden/forgotten and hard to find. When you actually stumble upon them, you feel very rewarded and it makes it more exciting and fun to explore.

Absolutely agree, and on both counts. As distracting as they were in Oblivion, at least they made some sense, since there was so little variety to the landscape. I use DarnifiedUI with the point of interest detection cranked all the way down to the minimum, and it's an enormous hassle finding things sometimes, since the cave entrance I'm looking for could be on this nondescript hill or on this other nondescript hill right next to it or on that other nondescript hill over there or on the other nondescript hill right next to it. If the terrain's more varied (as it had better be) than it should be easier to keep track of where you are by actual landmarks and easier to put cave entrances in places that look like places where cave entrances would be, and if that's the case, then there's no reason for a radar that tells me exactly where a cave entrance is when I'm still 1000 yards from it.

We can only hope.....
