Question: Vampires of Vvardenfell

Post » Sat Aug 10, 2013 10:09 am

I've recently begun looking into the in-game etymology of Dunmer words and names, just for personal interest. The vampire stronghold and clan names have always struck me as sounding different than most other racial and location names. Note, I am only talking about Morrowind, since that is my primary experience, but I won't exclude discussion from other games.

One thing I find interesting is that none of the Vvardenfell vampire clans are led by a Dunmer. We have three clans with three leaders:

Dhaunayne Aundae: Altmer

Raxle Berne: Imperial
Volrina Quarra: Imperial

Quarra and Berne don't sound like ordinary Imperial names, they may be able to pass as Dunmer, but not too closely. Aundae could potentially be an Altmeri name - but there are NO other examples of Altmer with names ending or even containing "ae" in Morrowind. Interestingly, -ae is added as a suffix for Altmer in Oblivion, but not in Skyrim.

The strongholds of the three vampire clans also have unique sounds and spellings:

Ashmelech: Aundae

Galom Daeus: Berne

Druscashti: Quarra

Ashmelech doesn't sound Altmeri at all to me, but it certainly didn't stick with the Dunmer Ancestral Tomb naming theme. Galom Daeus could be Imperial in origin, and it certainly doesn't sound like the name of any other Dwemer ruins. Druscashti doesn't sound Imperial to me, and doesn't sound Dwemeri, either.

In addition to the clan and stronghold names. Many generic vampire names have a stereotypical real-world vampire name feel to them, though there does seem to be some racial dependency to them (all the ones ending in "o" are Imperial):

Calvario

Clasomo

Gergio

Germia

Ildogesto

Irarak

Iroroon

Mirkrand

Reberio

My question among all of this is: do you think the vampire words and names have origins from Tamriel, or perhaps they could partially originate from their daedric roots? Or have vampires developed their own unique dialects? Or is their naming purely theatrical?

I'm more curious about what people think and thoughtful speculation, rather than looking for a concrete answer, since I do not believe there is one.

The names of the vampires may be ancient names that used to be more common centuries ago.
