questions about the cover system and AI...

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 7:26 pm

hi guys.

i just read that the game now has a cover system that works more like Far cry 3 or 4 or MGSV where you dont hold a button to go into cover but just stand close to it.

to me this is fantastic news, depending on how it works. sadly i heard that this feature was "just" implemented so i wont assume its implemented well.

frankly i think Farcry's cover system (like the one in Battlefield 4, is the best cover system for a 1st person shooter i've ever seen. it saves buttons and it allows cover fire and leaning against all types of cover since its collision based. MGSV's cover system is annoying as hell - unreliable and unresponsive.

does anyone have any more info about this system? does it work in 3rd AND 1st person?

About the AI -

does anyone have any idea who good the gun wielding AI is? i think gun play is only 50% of what makes good shootouts in games. the other 50% is good AI - an AI that can be fooled like humans could (breaking line of sight make them chase your last known position, making noisy distractions, flanking, using stealth) and an AI that can use cover and self preserve.

anyone know if the AI in FO4 can take cover or can be fooled by stealth?

is stealth even a thing in FO4?

That hasn't been discussed to the public by Bethesda, I didn't even know this existed, thanks for repeating the information so I definitely had that ruined.

I don't see new game features like a cover system as an leak.

The same way as missing features like holstered weapons is not an leak.

We have an tread about issues with crafting and junk.

Leaks is spoilers of quests and cool stuff, you use nearby cover by pressing an button is not an spoiler.

lets get over weather this is a leak or not and just try and discuss the matter.

also, another question - is there melee combat in the game? and when i say "melee combat" i dont mean "there is a bat and you can bash with it". i mean - if there is something more complex like attacking, blocking, time blocking, if enemies block or dodge etc. any info about this?

This isn't a leak, the cover system is made obvious in the E3 footage.

But it does seem to be only for NPC's and not the PC.

Melee is in and is improved a lot, you can now use an bayonet or the stock if you don't have one.

Technically you could put an chainsaw on the edge of your gatling laser. Yes this probably require mods.

More fun grenades is an separate button like shouts in Skyrim.

Yes, I do believe it is a sticky cover system like Far Cry has. We didn't see the PC do it in gameplay, but I noticed in the Museum of Freedom footage (completely Bethesda approved), one of the raiders turned sideways against a low barrier and ducked his head. Because leaked information seems to corroborate, I think it's safe to say that Fallout 4 will have sticky cover.

Personally, I'm not a fan of magnetic cover systems but I guess you have to use one if your game is in both first and third person or you're just gonna look ridiculous.

I think Wolfenstein's cover system was done well although the controls were probably mapped a little awkwardly

The AI can take cover just as the player can and they have been given a slight AI upgrade from previous games...

They will run at you while your reloading to take advantage of that and if your low on health or have a crippled limb they will prioritize you over any companions you have with you.

slight upgrade?
from the little i played FO3 i can remember they need a huge upgrade.

while i dont expect a far cry 4 level of AI, i do expect them NOT to stand in the open and fire or just crouch and shoot, motionless, like in FO3 or really old games. i also dont expect them to just run at me like zombies. not the gun wielding NPCs at least.

sadly i am pretty sure that most of the time the AI will be pretty dumb and very outdated and the only places where they will take cover is at areas where cover nodes are placed, which usually means - rarely.

also, are there silencers in the game? is there stealth?

There will probably be alot of enemies using cover at least.. since theres an entire perk related to shooting enemies thru cover called penetrator perk.
