Quick Overhaul Question

Post » Mon Aug 06, 2012 6:10 am

Hi guys, I hate to ask this but I have been searching online and still can not find the answer I am looking for.

I will admit I am not very tech savvy but I know enough to try and take care of something if I can find the right information.

I recently found my old Morrowind game and decided to play it again since I became bored with Skyrim.

I then found out about the graphics overhaul mod and loaded it up no problem and everything looks great.

Now my system is not the fastest. Only has 4 Gb of Ram and its just an i3 processor and the standard intel hd graphics card. Its a laptop from 2 years ago.

So I have been having some framerate issues since loading up the graphics overhaul and I turned off the distant lands part and now it runs pretty darn good, but I still get some issues when I am in a city with a lot of stuff going on. As there anything else through MGE which I can adjust or is this the best I will achieve?

That's a hard question to answer, usually because th answer kinda svcks.

Morrowind is a very CPU intensive program. While have a good graphics card helps, it won't really take up the slack for a slower CPU. Morrowind also only uses on core of a CPU, so unless you have a fast, high capacity single core, or a multi-core that doesn't half the capacity as my dual core does, you'll feel the pinch.

For example, when I play Morrowind on high graphical settings, one of my CPU cores maxes out and the game starts to crawl.

The following have been notorious for dropping my FPS:
  • Places with lots of clutter and/or people. Large, script-heavy interiors without teleporting doors between rooms are bad for my FPS as well as towns with lots of people milling about.
  • High detail shadows
  • Setting the view distance for distant land farther than three cells
  • Using very high resolution textures and/or very high poly meshes
MGSO has settings for slower computers and they work wonders. Another thing I hate to say, because it is so pretty, if not to use MGE XE. Use the last beta MGE version *without foam* and that will be a good start in your raising your FPS.

In the end, the main reason it is so hard to answer this question is that the exact definition of bad framerate is subjective. Some people are perfectly happy with an FPS hovering around 15, while others scream if theirs drops below 30. It's always a balancing act between what you want and what you can tolerate.
