Quick Question/Suggestion

Post » Sun Oct 17, 2010 6:25 am

Maybe a lesser version, or just a converter for mods, but I have seen several mods that could improve the gameplay, scenery, and difficulty. if you look at the http://www.fallout3nexus.com/, some of these mods could be beneficial to extend the game's life.

My Idea:

  • Allow a privately set-up site, where several admins would overlook the the files on the site, and remove, after a majority vote, the so-called "god" mode items. This would cut down on the "game-killers", and would allow creativity. The site listed above, has several mods that add more story, different openers, and several balanced outfits.

  • A "Multi-Platform" G.E.C.K., that allows mods to be converted, whether it be to PS3 or Xbox format. The former could be still linked to a server, and moderated, so the game couldn't be "over modded".

Please don't kill this thread, and don't flame it if you don't like the idea. I was simply trying to make and idea, and throw some criticism for the game designers to chew over.

IIRC Microsoft does not allow user made content to be ported to the 360.
(excluding 360 games with a map editor built into them)

Putting mods on the console is considered illegal.
So if you want to mod get a PC.

The consoles cannot get the GECK/Mods.
1) It is against the EULA and Microsoft/Sony will not allow it.
2) The Xbox/PS3 do not have the required hardware to run the game modded/or the GECK. They are too weak for that and do not have the Windows based architecture needed for the GECK to run in.
3) Mods cause instability with the game, which could cause a backlash towards Bethesda/Obsidian or Microsoft/Sony.
In short its not going to happen.

First, discussion of mods for consoles automatically gets a thread locked, so it will be killed.

Second, it isn't up to the developers if the consoles get mods. It is up to Sony and Microsoft, and both have said no.

Third, sorry.

I don't think so... For it to be illegal it would have to be a crime to make mods even with the developers consent.... I'm reasonably confident that no such law exists (i'm not a lawyer).

A breach of contract/EULA is something different alltogether.

I think the main problem would be mod incompatibilities, and all the [censored] you have to go through when you have a problem. I had to completely reinstall Fallout 3 because of mod incompatibilities. Pretty sure neither Microsoft nor Sony would want that.

Ouch...

Sorry, just a suggestion. I have the PC version of Fallout 3, but I was thinking that this might be possible due to Unreal Tournament 3.

Someone please kill this thread then. My bad!

Far, far too many hurdles. Some legal, some logisitical and some monetary.

For a start, who decides on the best mods and who pays for all the manpower and resources Bethesda have to devote to porting, bug fixing, testing and packaging the mods as DLC so they would be acceptable to MS and Sony's strict requirements.

It -like modding on the consoles- has been discussed many times and the general agreement is that it just won't happen for a long while yet. Like I said, too many hurdles.

It's not illegal to mod games.. It is illegal to change and redistribute the exe. or to make money off of mods. Consoles over the years have all had some sort of cheating device like gameshark, codebreaker, xploder.. which are basically game modding devices.. cheating is modding. However due to online play cheat devices are really frowned upon and Microsoft and Sony will most likely ban cheaters. Most games don't even come with cheat codes anymore whereas earlier console games all had cheat codes... Personally I think the consoles just don't want to have to compete with mods.. They make tons of money selling their DLC packages and little game addons. While major DLC's probably make a little money on PC's little goofy additions that you could easily do or make yourself like outfits, guns, skins, tweaks and textures wouldn't.
I'm pretty sure if they wanted to a game company could easily make a GECK like device that would work on a console for that particular game.
We'll just have to wait and see what future consoles have in store for us.. I'm thinking that future consoles will have to be internet compatible to compete against other devices ..

Are you talking about Halo 3 Forge? Its much less complex then the GECK, you dont have to deal with AI scripting or anything like that. Its much less powerful.

Modding on the consoles is breaking EULA which is not allowed to be discussed here.

To elaborate on this, the Forge is used for making self contained multiplayer maps, as opposed to being intergrated in the main game world.

At best Forge is used to place world tiles, spawn points, light sources and a variety of atmospheric effects.

The GECK can add new areas to the game world, change the terrain completely (Dont like that Megaton sits on a small hill? Turn it into a mountain), script, place NPCs, create dialogue, schedules, new quests, replace models and textures, change the equipment on an NPC, place creature spawns, navmeshes, link an interior to an exterior or to another area. Basically, a heck of a lot more things can be done.

Forge compared to the GECK is a bit like comparing a Buggati Veyron to a Sinclair C5.

Didn't discuss it, said it was possible.
Never said how or where to find this information. (Cause I can't remember, and I have no interest in it anyway)

Just one note, I was suggesting using the computer as a medium.

Not installing the G.E.C.K on a console, rather moving the mods to a console with a flash drive.

But still, the EULA isn't something I took into account.

Mods for Xbox is not allowed discussion here as it is against the Eula of the Xbox. Sorry.
