Quick thought exerices - WEPON expansion

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 5:37 am

This topic may better fit on the Construction Set board, but I thought I'd try here first

I've mentioned previously that I have a few different ideas for expanding WEPON (Weapon Expansion Pack for Oblivion Nthusiasts, in my signature).
One of those ideas--adding Stalhrim and Adamantium armor--looks like it's already being taken care of by Oblivion Intensity.

The other major idea was as follows:
Spoiler
A "Lost Daedric Shrine of Jyggalag" would be added to Cyrodiil, where the player could communicate with Jyggalag after the events of Shivering Isles have concluded. Jyggalag, in thanks for freeing him from the Greymarch, would offer to boost the strength of any weapon or piece of armor by "reordering" it, using a crystal, gem, or metal alloy you provide to him as a lattice. For example, a Daedric Longsword plus a Flawless Diamond might increase the Sword's strength and health by 20%, while a Daedric Longsword plus a Pearl might lower its weight 5%. The right combination might even yield a completely new type of equipment, not available anywhere else...
The problem I keep running into with this idea is how to prevent its abuse. I'd like both unenchanted and enchanted weapons/armor to be able to go through this process one time, and one time only. In the Construction Set, I could mark the unenchanted equipment with some variable that prevents it from being upgraded a second time...but, as soon as that equipment is enchanted, it takes on a new objectID, which means it would no longer be marked as un-upgradeable. So it could be upgraded a second time.
Do you have any ideas (short of disallowing enchanted equipment from being upgraded) to get around this problem? Am I going to have to modify the item enchanting script itself?

This is a really cool idea. It would be fun to have a new way to customize weapons. I think it might be best to only make it possible to do it to unenchanted weapons though. This gives people the ability to build up their base weapon and then enchant it from there. It makes sense that an enchanted weapon's enchantment might get in the way of the upgrade, like by causing too much interference, so the weapon needs to be a clean slate first to be upgraded.

Bump - FOR GREAT JUSTICE!
(Sorry, I'm not sure where that random Zero Wing reference came from.)

Anyway, this topic has to do with the other one I just posted - on the request for someone to recolor vanilla weapons or armor.

If Value isn't important, what about using that variable as a flag? Set it to a single arbitrary number for all enchanted weapons, and check for it in your conditions before enchantment is allowed. It'll look strange if someone goes to sell the item, but that's the breaks. And if the value is low, at least it will discourage abuse by sale.

What weapons\Armors did you have in mind and what color changes where you thinking ? I've got a couple recolored versions of the Glass armors\weapons done that I've not really used for anything (the armors were included in my one stop armor shop mod but the weapons I had done for an update but never did the update so were never released) -- would be willing to send them to you if they fit in with your needs. (you can see the colors (Red, Blue, Gold) in my One Stop Armors mod on Nexus ) Let me know if you want them and I'll package them up.

Hey, thanks for volunteering your work! That's just the sort of thing I'm looking for. Unfortunately, to fit the current idea I have for this new version of WEPON, the weapons and armor would either (a) need to be a whole new set, or (b ) be recolored Daedric, Amber, or Madness. That said, I'll definitely keep you in mind, and if no other volunteers/sets become available then I'll make this work. Thanks!

That being said, it may be worthwhile to include in WEPON the option to use a different colored set of Glass Weapons. I really loathe the green ones, and JDFan's post inspired me to go looking for others, and I found http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3021 (same person?) at any rate, including the ability to choose which set you use would be a nice addition to WEPON in general.

So this topic is about recoloring, rather than suggestions for getting around enchantment abuse?

Heh, good point. Let's try to keep the two topics straight mkay? :)

That being the case--was my suggestion above to solve your enchantment issue possible? It was the best I can do, I'm afraid, and I suspect a scripting maven would have far better ones for you.

I'll give it a try and let you know! I'd prefer not to use Gold Value as the dummy variable, but I think something along those lines could work. Maybe I'll be able to attach some attribute to the weapons that isn't normally used. Thanks for the suggestion!
