If you're getting one-shoted make sure to use a workaround for the disabled resistances bug from patch 1.2. It's like running naked out there. Use 1.1 or SKSE.

The wise man thinks of evil that will come and gaurds against it.

-Book of Changes.

In a world where people can shoot a million volts from their fingertips... you don't go picking fights without some insulation.

As a warrior you gotta think about mages more than other fighters, the witches don't play by your rules and they excel at staying out of your weapons reach while pummeling you with giant ice spikes.
You'll be ready for the next mage to cross your path though so I guess it was a good lesson.

But you will sometimes just meet one guy among a gang of bandits who is just more badass than you.
That's actually the point where you're supposed to run.

Here's another one... "He who fights and runs away... lives to come back 5 levels later with a warhammer."

Magic Resistance is broken in 1.2, and acting all funky.

I just created a High Elf assassin. Working on nothing but bows and One-hand. And I still take spells like they are nothing. Someone mentioned it in another thread, but I think Bethesda messed up and switched magic resistance with magic weakness, and it makes sense. I know my Nord was extremely weak to frost. Yeah my Nord. It killed him almost instantly. My High Elf however is taking spells left and right with no special or extra resistances. JUst be patient guy. From what they said they will have another patch out this week.

This.

90% of this thread is full of people who completely forgot that resistances are broken with the current patch (1.2). I'd even go as far as saying armor rating isn't shaving magic damage either.

I can't even play with the state of things. Any mage casts Blizzard in my direction and it 1 shots me.

You don't absolutely have to kill every random thing you ever see in the game. If something is too difficult, leave it until it's no longer so difficult. Why would you assume that everything you ever meet, no matter how low your level, is killable by you with ease?

He's not exactly wrong. I ran into a Arch Necromancer not too long ago. I have lots of magic resist, maxed out alteration tree, and over 300 hp (granted this isn't a lot, but I'm a mage and I've mostly stacked mana). On master difficulty he used a staff of ice storm that would 1-shot me if it hit. After killing him, and looking at this staff, it did 40 damage per second.... yet it 1-shot me with the first tick. That 40 damage converted to over 750. Even on master that is clearly a bug.

Like other people have suggested, you should equip yourself with something to counter him. I suggest using a companion with fortify hp gear. It takes an excessive amount of effort to kill.

I suppose I'll be glad that I haven't experienced this bug, then.

Fus ro dah, when used correctly is the most powerful shout I've got. The fire breath is a very close second.

Unrelenting force makes this game for me, nothing better then watching a foe back flip off a cliff.

Yeah, unrelenting force made the encounter after recieving Mehrune's Razor way too easy, what with that conveniently placed cliff there. The hard part was retrieving the valuable items afterwards....

1. Try to get spellbreaker. You will become a super magic tanker. Watch their face change to terror as you slowly advance, nearly immune to their magic.

2. Bait and dodge their attacks if they use ice spikes. They WILL run out if magicka after 8 - 10 spikes.

3. Brew some paralyze potions, even if you are bad at alchemy, just a hit once with an arrow can stop them for 3-5 seconds. Enough time to run over and apply club to face.

4. Magic/elemental resist is broken in the current patch, so try to get the Atronach standing stone. It blocks all magical attacks 50% of the time, mathematically half of the magic damage to you is negated.

5. Watch your stamina, spellcasters are good at destroying your stamina with ice spells so you can't power attack when you reach them. Pop stamina potions and apply club to face or enchant drain stamina weapons so you can repeatly apply club to face.

"He who fights and runs away... lives to come back 5 levels later with a warhammer."

I think I might quote you on that some day.

The harder fights I encountered were when I was swarmed by enemies. That went away when I spent perk points on sneak and archery because I ran out of things to spend on with my breton tank. After that, the game is a lot more fun but of course a lot easier. Even with 600 points of health I can die when overwhelmed. That just doesn't happen anymore unless I'm surrounded by several Draugr Overlords. Sometimes they fus do rah me across the room.

This happened to me while battling Malkoran a handful of times. One shot from his ice-based spell done me in.

Turning down the difficulty should hopefully help.

I'm sorry, but I'm still going to have to call BS here, at least in stating this as a blanket term. I've read this from multiple sources, but as of 1.2 I'm as durable as ever.

Interesting idea to work around the bug with the Atronach stone, though.

Lol I had a similar experience with the drinking quest thing and ended up getting killed y a bunch of mages.

I was maybe level 17 but I stuck to it and I beat them after about 20 deaths .

Yeah I made this post in anger, mainly due to the Markarth quest bugging and me losing that character, had to restart.

I went back and didnt even fight them this time, just ran off.

I found three items, well bought actually that give me like 55% magic resistance, Im level 14 now. Went back and got 3 shotted. Getting better right?

At least I saved it. With magic resist and resistance in general broken not really interested in playing. Especially because they decided in there wisdom
to scale AI magic but not player magic, for balance maybe? Did they not see the idiotic power you could get with enchanting and smithing?!?

Also, I wanted to play through with just using stuff I bought/picked up. Got the glowing sword, daybreaker? SP? I think. And I found a steel sword later
that did more damage. Isnt that supposed to be like an epic deadrich weapon or something?

When I die to magic now I don't even see my health bar, my guy just dies outright. Combined I have about 50% resistance all-around, and 520 armor rating with 370 health.

A fix for this can't come sooner.

So what if the mages are overpowered?
It only makes for a good challenge. This game is pretty easy even on master when you're level 50+ so I think it's only fair.

I'd just like to thank everyone in this thread for their short memories and reminding me why there's no reason to listen to most of your opinions on this game in other threads, because you've all forgotten that Magic Resistance has been completely removed with the 1.2 Patch. You've all just turned on the OP for literally no reason making assumptions about his playstyle, and in some cases ridiculing him when the fact is it's the damn game that's broken. The only option if you have is to wait till January for the next patch, hoping that nothing else becomes broken in the process.

Im level 12, a somewhat pure sword and board warrior.

I leave whiterun after turning saddia in and go around the city and find some smugglers, no big deal, tough fight but win.

Then three more come in, one of which is a caster. In two spells I die. TWO SPELLS.

I know I dont have any magic resistance or lightning resistance but COME ON. Two spells?!?

Even if I equipped my newly gotten fast healing it wouldnt do much, and this mage with his dagger BLOCKED my shield bash twice.

Good job breaking your own game bethesda, Ill go play something else till you figure out you needed the Creation Kit and modders sooner to FINISH YOUR GAME.

By any chance did you get the Patch which came out last week? Because that broke all magical defences, mate. There's supposed to be another patch out this week to fix it, but it makes getting hit by spells VERY effective.

Works botth ways, of course. You can trounce AI units in the same way, but as a pure Warrior, it svcks. You cannot defend yourself adequately against mages without magical armour. And a mage with Fireball can do HEAVY damage as it is.

Wait for the next patch. It'll make things a LOT more balanced again.

Hey, without proper shielding spells prepared, half of the meele NPCs will hit me once and get instakill animation right after that. That's right, I'm a mage!
The game has many bad things, but this isn't one of them. Lower difficulty before ragequiting I guess.

@Mord
I think he clearly stated he does not have any resistances at all...so nothing really changed with the patch there.

If you're a warrior, frost and fire resistance is essential.

At higher levels, you meet arch-cryomancers, and they basically freeze you to a dead stop without frost resistance, and then proceed to ruin your day.

You do realize that resistances aren't even working currently right? Besides that, the game is severely bugged in at least one of two ways:

1. Player Destruction spells have been totally bugged since release.
2. NPC Destruction spells have been totally bugged since release.

No one who has any awareness or common sense at all could argue otherwise. NPC physical classes can sometimes do completely stupid damage (i.e. 1200 health Two-Handed Warriors that two-shot you) but for the most part, none of them "scale" as bad as what the NPC casters do, especially the one-shot shock mages and those that have infinite mana to spam Ice Storm and machine gun fire Ice Spears until you die.
