Quite a distracting problem

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:16 am

Hey guys, been meaning to get this off my chest for quite a while actually.

Growing up I had no problem committing myself to games, I would sit down and play through such games like Commandoes, Earthworm Jym, Super Mario 64, Goldeneye. I would play them all day everyday, then all of a sudden, about 10 years later, around the age of 16-17, the dedication I had towards games left. Now I seem to have this ADD side of me that cannot play through a single game hardly ever and If I do its a very rare occasion. I am not sure what this problem is, I buy so many games, even when I don't need to. I always think, now I have money that I can do whatever I want, sure i'll buy this, oh that looks good i'll buy that, oh thats out now, I'll buy that. I do this all the time and my game collection has gone through the roof since being a working man. I have no problem buying games, but playing them I have difficuilty. Now its not that I don't enjoy them, I do, I will just start playing a game, something will happen like I will die, or I will complete a level and then I switch and go, right done with this for a bit and go to another game. This really is bugging me, I don't want to constantly switch between games, I get so lost I get so overwhelmed and I just want it to be like the old classic days of sitting down and playing through the entirety of Shenmue until It was completed, or working hard to get past this ONE level I just can't get through instead of saying [censored] it and move on.

I guess I am asking you guys for help, weather or not you suffer or hopefully suffered with the same 'condition' as me and managed to overcome it! Weather you can give me tips, tricks on going back to my childhood and being able to play through game again instead of getting bored or distracted 30minutes in. I KNOW I would have a much more enjoyable gaming life if I was more like that, but as it stands right now, my alone time svcks.

So guys, any advice? : )

I have the same problem. I have about 40 games that I need to play, and I just can't seem to find the impetus to actually play any of them. I've told myself that unless a game I really want is at a rock-bottom price, I'm not going to buy any more until I start working on my backlog of games and enjoy the ones I already have.

Sometimes I will start a new game, but the moment I get stuck on a puzzle or a boss fight, I just start to lose interest and switch to a different game or just no game at all. =/

To this day I have not beat the Main Quest or any major guild or House in Morrowind, my favorite game.

I would suggest taking up flash games :P

Nothing wrong here you just grew out of video games and/or you just need to take a break form games.

Same thing is happening with me these days as exams are coming up soon. I haven't played a game in months, and I don't think I will until summer, or maybe even until Skyrim comes out...

I am like that too. I switch from game to game to game, or if I do stick to a game, I keep resetting and starting over. Same goes with other things, when I try to build and paint my minitures. I start one army, move on to another army or gaming system, never sticking to one thing.

I guess I have ADD like you said or what ever you call it. I just can't seem to stick to one thing, does get annoying, I know what you mean, you are not alone. :)

I sorta have that problem, i get bored of games very easily, some easier than others. Fallout got boring after about a year of having it. I still play NV sometimes, but it wore out its welcome, the cracks started to show. I'm waiting for Skyrim at this point. So ya, its normal.

Now I seem to have this ADD side of me that cannot play through a single game hardly ever and If I do its a very rare occasion. Maybe you've grown out of a specific genre of game? I am not sure what this problem is, I buy so many games, even when I don't need to. I always think, now I have money that I can do whatever I want, sure i'll buy this, oh that looks good i'll buy that, oh thats out now, I'll buy that. I do this all the time and my game collection has gone through the roof since being a working man. I have no problem buying games, Doesn't sound like you're being too judicial about your puchases. When you little money, did you think harder about what games you were going to buy? By thinking harder about a purchase, were you able to purchase a better match? but playing them I have difficuilty. Now its not that I don't enjoy them, I do, If you truely enjoyed them, then you'd keep playing them. LIke reading a good book that you just....can't....put....down! I will just start playing a game, something will happen like I will die, or I will complete a level and then I switch and go, right done with this for a bit and go to another game. So don't buy so many fricking games! That way you have less temptation, and less plots to follow

You're older. Do have more interests now? Do you have less leisure time due to work? Are you trying to pack in the same diversity of activities into a shorter amount of time?

So guys, any advice? : ) Pull dwn your pants and slide on the ice! ;)

I play games every single day, but I have your problem as well. I haven't lost interest in video games(I'm a bit older even, 29), but when it comes to completing games, I'll make it about halfway to 3/4 of the way through a game, then just stop playing it. I also buy and have a huge backlog of games, like around 50 or more(honestly it's probably more, I'm just counting DS and 360 games, not even considering a ton of PS2 and SNES games that I bought in the last few years, and of course, quite a few PC games as well). Currently playing Sacred 2 for the PC and Rune Factory for the DS, already losing interest in Sacred I can tell. Rune factory I actually just came back to, I made it like halfway through it back around November, then quit shortly after christmas. Hopefully I'll manage to finish it, cuz I have the 2nd one waiting to be played, still un-opened, rofl.

I think it's just something us gamers go through at one point in time or another. My best friend went through it about 4 or 5 years ago, lasted for like 2 years he couldn't finish any game. I've been going through it for like the last 3, so I'm hoping I'm about to exit this phase and start finishing them again, LOL

Me thinks that's your problem right there. Too many games in your pile, too many options, if one game frustrates you at any point you'll probs dump it, and turn to another, instead of working through the challenge of the game you're playing. Buying a few games at once there's the temptation of giving them all a go, just a quick run thorugh, whereas if you just bought one you'd give it a really good go, and there'd be no other distractions... you'd have time enough to really get into it. Some games take some getting into, and if you distracted you'll never give one a chance to grab ya.

My brother does the same thing. Buys a cack of load games in bulk, and jumps from one to the other, it can take him forever to complete just one. Uness it's something that really, really stands out and is epic, he'll pretty much hop from one game to the next. But he won't buy more than that current bunch until he's done 'em all. Having a kid too, though, he said there's no way he could sit for as long I do playing one game right through. I bought him Alan Wake and Metro 2033 a month or two before Christmas, and I know from his Live account he's barely played either. lol

So yeah. Narrow your collection down, give a pile to a friend to look after and you keep hold of one or two. Or pick one game you know you like but haven't yet completed, and tell yourself you're only gonna stop playing it when you've reached the end of it. lol

Same problem here. I've got way too many games, not enough time and my interest just plummets. Being tired from work doesn't help, either. Also re: too many games, sometimes you don't buy them. I had Revenge of the Titans pop up on Steam now just because I donated to the Humble Indie Bundle.

I also have this huge backlog with too many unfinished/never installed games. But not because I give up and switch to another game when I'm bored or stuck, it's because I focus on less than a handful games at a time and play them hundreds of hours usually. Bought Borderlands and Bad Company 2 at release, still playing both, bought New Vegas a while ago, still playing it, I don't see myself leaving any three of these anytime soon.

I suggest insisting on a game that you really like instead of giving up easily.

You need a doctor. Considering this a condition, is a condition in itself.

well thats what happens when you start working. What happened to me, is that when I started working, I got so used to being up and active, that I haven't been able to sit through playing a game all the way through anymore. When I got laid off or quit a job and couldn't find one, after awhile I could play through a game. My suggestion... if you really want to play a game all the way through... quit your job!! haha.
