race being biggest decision in skyrim

Post » Fri Dec 03, 2010 3:21 pm

In Daggerfall your atributes determined how easily their governed skills would increase...

What if now... lets say each tenth increase in a skill will increase its governing attribute...
that way you won't be able to be weak once your a master of one-handed...
and then becoming the fastest (or strongest) (or smartest) being in Tamriel, will be HUGELY affected by your race choice, and your training in said skills...

I want to play a Khajiit mage. I wouldn't want race being the "biggest" decision and be punished for that. Sure perhaps it should be harder to start, but I don't think mere race should have a permanent large effect for the whole game.

I'd be happy if attributes naturally increase as skills increase. No more multipliers that inspire me to not have very much fun min/maxing skills for each level. Thank goodness for mods.

Races should have a distinct effect on starting attributes (or whatever replaces them) and their caps. Just as in the real world, a black man will typically be a better sprinter than a white man, while the white man can swim faster (generalisations, I know, but generalisations with a great deal of research behind them - in this case, centre of mass is key). I'd like the race decision to really shape your character's development, with class etc somewhat secondary yet still important.

I don't want to be limited in my character creation. If I want an orc mage and a wood elf barbarian, I shouldn't be penalized for choosing the wrong race.

Yes you should.

People have been spoiled by the last two games and don't view this as the game flaw that it is.

last 3 games. Especially daggerfall.

I think that race will determine your starting "stats". Like other people have said, they'll be under the hood. An Orc will be stronger than a Bosmer, etc.

From there I think attributes will be increased at each level based on the skills you used. If you leveled up a lot of strength based skills and a couple intelligence based skills then your attributes would rise accordingly. You just won't be able to pick the modifiers and you won't be able to see them. Your character will just become more effective over time and it will feel that way.

Actually I sort of like the attributes removal, it might be ok if done right

I think the attributes will depend on skills: as skill increases, it adds something to attribute. Just like before, but without player's choice

I think that the chance of attributes being gone completely if almost none.
The reason I say this is that TES is built on a world of Lore and that is one of the main things that good and different races being stronger at different things is the hole point of having 10 different races. It does not limit your role playing but gives you a framework to role play from. If you want to be an argonian mage then do it.
I think the part that has been removed is adding points to atributes at level up, but characters will start with different attribute stats in the begining as that is what makes them distinct.

Actually, I think racial bonuses such as being able to carry more, run faster, breath underwater, or resist magic are good because they could make the game play different while not being specific to a certain skill set. I'd prefer to avoid too many like "bonus to sword skill", but some of them like that would be okay.

I think the race's abilities and powers could potentially be more interesting than a bunch of stat bonuses and penalties, though. I don't think they were used much so far, but mostly because they always stayed at the same level and the "once a day" thing made it easy to forget they were even there.

What if each race could have their own perk tree like the skills do? So then your racial powers could be increased in strength as you level, keeping them useful throughout the game, and giving you some choice to play to your race's strengths or subvert it. For example, most of an Orc's perks could be strength-related, but there would be the occasional magic one. So someone that wants to play a weakling Orc shaman could avoid the "Orc Strength" perks and take the magic ones instead.

This is my first topic<...>

Have a http://images.uesp.net//c/c4/Fishystick.jpg! If you haven't already... I never got one, so I'll send one to http://images.uesp.net//c/c4/Fishystick.jpg. Haaaww, that felt good.

Anyway, I'd like to think that races are not just an esthetic plus, but influences your forces/weaknesses. You could still make a sneaky orc or whatnot, but with much more work. My point of view can be resumed to this little sentence written on the 'Gattaca' movie cover: "There is no gene for human spirit". If you've got the will, you'll find the way.

It's the same with sixes. Proportionaly, men have stronger arms, women stronger legs, again, proportionaly. I can lift a 55ft tv but I use my legs and hips while a guy just uses his arms and torso. In the end, we both lift it...

I hate the idea of races being designed for certain characters. It basically tells me that if I want to be a mage, I should choose Breton or Altmer. If I want to be a warrior, I should choose Nord or Orc.

I hate the idea that if I'm the "wrong" race, I will never be as good at being whatever as if I had chosen the "right" race, because those 100 magicka points is quite a big deal, or that 20% damage bonus.
I'm not sure why this bugs me; I'm not a powergamer, and I'm aware it's a singleplayer game so it really doesn't matter, but it really does bug me.

I hope its like this... if you think about it, a stronger starting character will be stronger than a weaker starting character at end game if they're leveled similarly. Depending on race skill bonuses, this could work very well indeed, or it could be like past ES games where your characters can all be the same by high levels. I'm hoping the former rather than the latter.

Hey thanks! Not gunna I was going to make my first topic about fishy sticks... I was under the assumption no one gave them out anymore lol.

But I couldn't agree more... I don't deny an orc can become a thief... the sneak skill is exactly that, a skill. You work at it, you become better. I just think races that historically are known to be stronger, more cunning, ect. Should be portrayed as such. I think it would add a lot to the game, and depending on how much race specific stuff we get, add another reason to play as those races we tend to shy away from.

Besides, if you wanna be a thief, wouldn't the smart thing to do be pick the race best suited for it? Not doing that is like choosing the 5'5 basketball player as.opposed to the 6'5 one (I got no beef with earl boykins, I'm just making a point lol)
You can, but you're going to have some obvious disadvantages.

The toughest enemy in Morrowind was a Bosmer, heh.

Orcs on a whole are stronger than Bosmer, but it would silly to insist that no outliers exist. The player is an outlier. Racial determinism in an RPG is uninspired and makes for predictable gameplay with no meaningful contributions. I don't want to the game condemning me for rolling an Altmer who is down on his luck and forced to pick pockets.

Gaendor (if you mean him) was so tough because he had like 52341138643523564316952 luck or some, his luck value is far above anything any other NPC has and is far above what any player can achieve without glitching or using the console. So he was not strong but lucky, and everyone can be lucky.

This is my first topic, and I didn't see any topics that are discussing what my thoughts may be....

So I think the common assumption is attributes are out of skyrim. I can't say this for sure, as it is all pure speculation. But I figure if attributes are gone they must figure out a way to determine the basic things we're all accustomed to (ie. Encumbrance, starting magicka, ect.)

My thoughts on this boils down to the races! What if picking your race at the beginning of the game WAS in fact, the most important decision to make... what if picking a bosmer as opposed to an orc made you faster, and more.agile, but far weaker... or picking a breton over a nord gave you more intelligence, which translates to more magicka.

The possibility to make each race completely different and distinct is something I think a lot of people wanted... whether getting rid of attributes is really necessary to do this, I do not know, but it definitely raises some interesting possibilities :)

What does everyone else think? Good idea? Bad idea?

I predict that racial benefits/drawbacks will be now handled like their resistances were handled before - as constant effects on you that can't be dispelled. Also some initial boosts to Health, Magicka and Stamina.

That'd definitely a possibility... and that would allow the stronger races to be stronger, faster to be faster, ect.

Agreed. But I felt in Oblivion that no matter what race you picked, you would always end up "superior". Except your magicka. Picking a race should be crutial to the future of your gaming experience.

Exactly! I didn't like that besides breton and altmer, by end game you were Damn near the same character. Especially if you power leveled and maxed out all stats... I think with the hiding of attributes, this will end the problems of characters becoming too similar. At least that's what I'm hoping.

I think what they will do is have bonuses and oenalties for each race that stay effectively the same for the entire 50 plus levels of the game.. so no 100 more magicka or 50 more hps stuff...

a high elf mage simple will be a better caster... a bosmer will simply be a far better bow user or dagger wielder or whatever...

Not just a stat changing but the game changing depending on what race you pick.
