Race specific Combat

Post » Wed Aug 25, 2010 3:44 pm

One thing that has always bothered me, and the reason i avoided the beast races, was the lack of any actual difference in the races as far as combat and the general feel is concerned. visually they are all different [less so in oblivion than morrowind] but when it comes down to it, the beast races have anatomy that the men and mer do not, and yet really not so different when you are playing them.
the way it was handled before was just statistical, but now it seems that bethesda is going for a more visual approach to the game rather than the complicated nature of most rpgs, SO it would seem more fitting for them to make the feel of each race something that is HIGHLY noticeable and instantly entices you to make a choice,

so tell me if my ideas sound good to you.

give each race its own:

  • Combat animations.
  • Special moves.
  • more noticeable affinity for a specific type of gear, weapon or magic school
  • disposition [racism I KNOW...TABOO GAME CONTENT..and gamesas is not rockstar.]
  • NPC behavior [if you meet a nord he may or may not be the general stereotype (mead & muscle)]

PLEASE add more to the list.

i can get behind this, but there was racism in game (play a Khajiit, you will find people that hate you calling you a furlicker and a mangy housecat.)

mildly remember that. unfortunately it didnt make my character feel like less of a person.i want the person calling you that to encourage you to murder them in cold blood for calling you mr fluffy!

I agree, this would be a perfect addition, even though I dont play beast races but I do always pick Night Elf (dunmer) tho I'm not sure what to add but things as such different skills attributes or just style add to them, maybe even small things such as how CP using a bow or swings a dagger/sword, how he runs/walks

Exactly what I am trying to do in Oblivion, starting with Argonian. Each race needs its own animations. Maybe make the Argonians more lizard like in movement, not like a scaled human. I want Kahjit to run more feline that humanoid. Also maybe having certain races have different grips on weapons (A small race would not be able to hold as many weapons one-handed as a bigger race... say an Orc)
Edit: And I liked Racism in the Game. I didn't feel bad after killing a racist NPC like I did with inocent npc. I completed Thieves Guild just so I could go and Kill Countess Alessia Caro.

Unable to use a weapon is kind of harsh specially if its your ability to wield hammers/maces, tho movement is defently best idea yet on this forum

I agree races should all have a distinct feel from one another.

Also maybe having certain races have different grips on weapons (A small race would not be able to hold as many weapons one-handed as a bigger race... say an Orc)

Another thing, I think the weapons would change size depending on the size of the person holding it. That would need to change too.

I never said stopping weapons use, I just said smaller races might not be able to hold some weapons in one-hand at start and needs to train in them first before you can stop using two-handed, well some races can start off holding the weapon in one-hand because of size.

right, kinda like how wow balances their smaller races by restricting the classes they can use. (BAD EXAMPLE)
but i get what your saying, make it more realistic for a bosmer who wants to carry a heavy weapon HAS to TRAIN to be able to USE it PROFICIENTLY!
I GOTCHA!!!

I'm all for it... I liked how at the beginning of Oblivion when you play as a Night Elf the guy in the cell across from you was being racist (felt realistic in a mediveal magical fantasy kind of way) and should have a larger role in Skyrim.

Maybe the beast races could have some more innate emotes too, to help sell that illusion more. Like for the Argonians, every once in a while a fly could happen past, and then you would see your long pink tongue snap out in your viewscreen and snatch the fly. And then you'd hear yourself crunching away. Or if you're a Khajit, and you see some string hanging off a table, it appears to glow momentarily, drawing your attention, you want to examine it for some reason, but then you see it's just a piece of string (to mimic the way a cat is suddenly very interested in things that hang and move suddenly). In any way that something trivial could be made to "catch your attention" then you would appear more catlike in your curiosities.

The Argonians could also see rats and become hungry, you could hear it hissing slightly coupled with a mmm sound slipping through your teeth uncontrollably.
The Argonian could sound slitheringly pleased to find a source of water. So that if you went into the water, the Argonian would have its own way of "purring" in essence to show its great pleasure. Maybe it sounds like a snicker-hiss ? Does someone have an idea?
The Argonian could move more fluidly in battle, sinuously like a snake...

The Khajit's could pur randomly when a member of the opposite six in their race walks by.
When a Khajit lays down for bed, it could go into a real purring mode, where it vibrates its throat rapidly like cat's do when they're very happy.
Sometimes when a Khajit is in battle, it could hiss and "rowr!" very loudly to sound like a cat fighting another cat.

All of these would help to sell the illusion of being another race besides human. I think it is essential to do this, to sell the illusion. It's just essential. It MUST be done.

i was really hoping this thread would stay within the box a little bit. good suggestions but maybe not relating to the TITLE!
really i just want all the races to be more defined in general [and maybe i should have included this] but i really was hoping for more suggestions related to combat and movement. idle animations are fine too..

I would imagine this would probably be a hell of a lot of work, and they won't be able to do it. We'll probably just have race-based dialogue.

why not race specific perks too

like kajiit would have sharp claws perk(higher hand to hand attack + animations too(maybe))
or Orcish breath to paralyze or scare(you know for lolz jk)

all the races have special traits, why not have perks to improve them too

pain was a thing created by evolutuion to warn people that getting hurt was bad.

they are demons- there is no evolution.

Hahaha, sorry, these forums are moving too fast. There were TWO race-related topics at the same time one page 1 and I clicked on the wrong one. I never stopped to read the title, I just posted what I meant to post for the other place. I think this topic is fine, I do care about it, I just made a mistake. Sorry.

No need to extend your Khajit battle claws and lacerate my face over it. Down Kitty, down!

Khajiit should fight in a more brutal, feral-style, such as taking much more wilder swings with weapons, and attacking quicker. Argonians could be cautious, but strike quickly with precision.

Do they feel pain?

Yes, they do, as outlined in Spirit of the Daedra.

My two cents on this: I want individual racial powers to look different. E.g. an orc going berserk starts foaming at the mouth and roaring, a Redguard using Adrenaline Rush starts breathing very rapidly, Breton's Dragon Skin power does just what it says, Argonians have visible gills, Khajiit get a unique night vision shader that transitions smoothly from normal vision, Dunmer get a unique model of ghost to protect them, Bosmer literally speak to animals, Imperials get unique dialogue choices, Nords don't get slowed down by frost, high elves... look really pleased with themselves at all times? "At least I'm dying elegantly and/or tragically. If my House could see me now..."
