Race Specific Perks

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 4:55 am

I'd love to see some racial perks (this thread has a lot of potential to violate political correctness). I thought the one a day powers were really lame. I always chose a race with a passive benefit. They were much more useful.

I think 10% is appropriate and would add some nice touch to the whole perks thing.

A few race specific perks in the skills thay have a startingbonus in would make sense, but 10% is perhaps a little too much. Maybe between 2-4 in each of the skills the race have bonuses in. A race shouldn't have own perks in skills were they lack bonuses, since it wouldn't make much sense.

Change the Altmer perk to Aldmer heritage and it sounds good, Altmer are closer related to Aldmer than Ayleids.

I voted for 25%. I think 50% is too much and 10% to little. So say 25 out of a 100 perks for racial only would be a great reason why to try different races that I never have done before.

Like only Argonians are the only ones to breath underwater, but other races can cast them but no permenant underwater spells, they have to be reast what ever the time duration is.

5 perks per race?

More like 10, as I recall there being about 200ish perks in the game...

Argonian - since water breathing is a racial ability some possibly racial perks could be:
Poisen claws - 10% chance of poisening an enemy when striking with bear hands
Water eyes - can see just as well under water as above water
Black out - ablilty to change scale color Black for a time adding 25% to stealth when wearing no shirt or pants in the dark

I voted no, mainly because those types of perks are Fallout type perks, which in my opinion tended to be pretty useless. It is my understanding that the perk system in Skyrim will be skill based.

Edit - also I imagine any race type perk will actually be included as race bonuses when you choose your race.

I like this idea. Some perks might be available to more than 1 race but not all races. I can see both Nords and Orcs having access to Berserk type perks.
I'd say between 10-25% of perks should be race-limited. If not every Bosmer is going to have the same perks there need to be a decent few to choose from.

Nords - Ice Mastery Perk - Nords are unencumbered when walking through snow/ice.

Do we know yet if this snow/ice feature is in the game?

I'd say between 10-25% of perks should be race-limited. If not every Bosmer is going to have the same perks there need to be a decent few to choose from.

This is key. There should be some perks that are only available to a specific race. There should be some that are only available to a specific type of race (some for "warrior" races, some for "magical" races, that sort of thing) and there should be enough of them available to choose from that it will add to differentiation not only between the races, but between individual characters.

For instance, my Bosmer hunter could take the perk that grants him a higher level cap on Beast Tongue, so he's not still stuck only being able to command rats and mudcrabs when he's level 20. My Bosmer thief probably isn't going to be much interested in that, but he could take the perk that grants him a bonus on negotiating with merchants and/or fences. And no other race is going to have access to the Beast Tongue one (obviously), though, say, Imperials would also have access to the negotiation one.

The only problem I see with this idea is that I'm going to be disappointed if it's not in the game. It's really such an obviously good idea, and wouldn't be at all hard to implement.

 10 / 200 = 20 25% of 20 is 5.

Very good idea, OP. One of the better ones I've seen lately.

Though I do agree with people that even 10% is somewhat high. Between 4 and 8 race-specific (or archetype) perks seems like the sweet spot.

Great idea, voted 10%.I am down for anything race specific.Whether it be perks, triats, gameplay feel,quests....etc.
Anything to make my character more unique and also to make my other playthroughs with different races feel new and different than the first,second,third......etc.

Redguards - Battle Adrenalin Perk - Restores HP slowly during combat.

To me, I think this will either be meaningless or overpowered. Why not have it restore stamina during combat? Since stamina will probably be playing a big role.

Nords - Ice Mastery Perk - Nords are unencumbered when walking through snow/ice.

Don't like this. Nords have a restistance to the cold yes, why this would empower them with the ability to carry lots of stuff makes no real sense.

I actually like your other suggestions.

Race bonuses are almost entirely meaningless. They're just a temporary head start, and not even that much of one. A high level female Breton fighter will probably have 100 strength and 100 weapon skill. A high level male Nord fighter will probably have... 100 strength and 100 weapon skill. The head start that the Nord got counts for nothing in the long run.

Perks, on the other hand, would make a difference in the long run. I'm in favor of anything that represents a permanent and recognizable difference between the races. And if they're optional, then they just add to the range of characters that can be created, and I'm in favor of anything that does that too.

I like this idea.

I agree with you.

10%.

sounds like a GREAT idea. adds re-playability. All the races always end up too similar in past games IMO, I'd like some variation, and this is a good method.

I hear that ice/cold spells are rarely used by enemies (Even in skyrim I doubt there will be enough to make an ice perk worth it).

I think nords need a more useful advantage, if they are practically vikings they should have some awesome battle capacity.

Khajit suggestion - Nimble Feet - More sneak? (Not very familiar with the game, only played OB a few times.

i for one agree with more difference between races, as long as the perks a weighed equally and one race does not have overpowered perks over the others,

Bosmer- rapid shots-skills with archery have improved beyond other races, you can now pull the bow back 10% faster( maybe 5% idk)
orc- curse of our god (berserker)- when the ability becomes active the Orc does 2X damage, but also receives 1.5X extra damage to himself.
nord- cold of the north-the nord now does a little cold damage with his attacks, (Amount of damage based on Nords skill with weapon the player is using)
Nord-fighting the cold-Nord is now almost immune to cold damage.
Altmer- spell slinger- the altmer magica now regenerates faster.
Khajiits- prowl- you now sneak on all fours, making you 5% less likely to be seen.
khajitts- run with the wild- when you sprint with your weapon sheathed you sprint on all fours making you twice as fast.

I'm liking whats listed there already! I completely agree that each race should have very profound skills that give you a reason to prefer one over the other for the longerterm instead of a bunch of petty bonuses that become obsolete quickly. I also want to see npcs use their racial perks often.

And how cool would it be when your high leveled to run across a khajiit bandit who runs at you not with an ax but with a wicked set of claws? and if all the races had just 10% of their perks exclusive to their race, when you're high leveled, all the races would be that much more diverse. That was one of the key improvements Todd was focusing on in the interviews. Fighting a altimer would feel different than fighting a breton. fighting a redguard would feel different than fighting an imperial. ect.

I love you

I'd rather just have better racial benefits opposed to actual race specific perks.
