[Character Creation] Race

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 3:40 am

So during the character creation of E3 ive noticed that besides the categories "Face", "Extras" and "Body" there are no other Options. This leads me to concluding that the subdivision race is not included in Fallout 4. What do you think about race not being a part of the new Fallout? Is it a politically correct move by Bethesda to tell us that "race is just skin color"? Or are you satisfied with finally having abolished race? Personally i was happier with race it provided a quicker and more precise character creation for me. And i do think that the Absence of race is a politically correct move by Bethesda to tell us something like "we are all the same".. "except sixes" and perhaps in the next Fallout we wont even have those.

It looked like there were a good few character presets during the E3 demo that meant you could at least start with the apearance of your prefered race, then edit it more finely from there.

Assuming you can still make your characters Asian and Hispanic, does it really matter? They included body which might have taken up the slot usually reserved for 'race' and this was just a pragmatic decision to not clog up the UI. Or maybe for console controllers, who knows. Or cares.

My third FO3 character was blue african american and oddly that wasn't the funniest part, Black Dad Liam Neeson was.

Well the 'races' are just presets anyway, which you apparently still get looking at the E3 footage.

Honestly unless the sculpting allows us to affect profile and head shape, we're looking at another Dragon Age: Origins - there are no black (or asian) people, only dark oily white people. (At least, unlike in DAO, there's actually curly hair).

Not toooo worries though, because even FO3, and TES: Oblivion, had a head 'heavy-light' slider. Even with the absence of sliders per se, I hope something like that still exists. A have a whole range of characters I'd love to make!

Yeah but theres no more label to sort them out. race became a preset instead of a subcategory or trait of characters. now you cant distinguish an NPCs from another they've all become equal except for appearance. why have six then and not some Grey goo that you can form a female looking or male looking character from?

I've always liked making asian characters in Fallout. I roleplay them as chinese and I like to imagine the struggles they'd have to face in a world that thinks they blew up the world.

Race literally meant nothing in Fallout 3 and New Vegas though, so I guess it doesn't matter that it doesn't exist at all now.

[sarcasm]

Honestly I'm quite offended that there is no Great Old One as a choosable species. It is clearly discrimination against us non-humans who play these products despite them being made by inferior humans. Complete and utter disregard for our superior species. How dare they.

It also offends me that there is little to no way to distinguish between the sub-races of humans. How will I know what human to eat unless it is properly labeled? There is a distinct difference between the effects of garlic-salt on European-Americans & Asian-Americans. Quite annoying it is; as well as offensive!

Overall I like the change in the character creation system. I'm quite happy they abandoned the crap that was Skyrim's creation system in all of its inferiority. The racial skin slider being a good improvement as well allowing for easier character creation.

Weird so you are obviously a fan of HP Lovecraft but dont have high regards for his views on race, which were quite explicit?

I was mocking the social idiots mostly for propping up the other non-joke threads on the character's six, race, or other aspects.

I did not say my views on race though. They are, however, quite explicit. : )

You can still mako an afro-american character... what's the point of having it as own category...?

What am I missing here?

How do you distinguish someone's race in public?

Do they need a label over their head noting what race they are?

Can one not tell an Asian form a Hispanic just by looking at them?

It looked to me like the protagonist was sculpted into a black man. How is racial diversity not implemented in this game?

I was wondering the same thing. I think too many people spend a lot of time hoping to find something to complain about. I'm now reminded of why I mostly ignored the Skyrim forums before game launch, hoping I won't end up doing the same again but probably will.

I think literally the only thing that would use a race label would be a description - in FO3, once the Talons had a mark on your head, you could loot bounty notes - these notes would specify your gender and race as a means of recognising you.

IN FO3 and FONV, literally the only thing that ever did.

I hope we can make our characters older though. Previously 'old' actually IS considered a separate race by the game engine. (Though I know if you CAN make your character older, people will still call you 'son' and 'kid' because its always assumed you'll play a young un.)

I love the character creation, particularly the Body section, very intrigued by what could come from there. I hope we get huge freedom with that and can make our character as skinny/fat, Thin/Muscular or as Curvy/slender as possible.

I might just go with the default female face, I like that face a lot and that's saying something because the presets are usually horrible in a Beth game.

I personally don't care if the game recognizes my ethnicity. I know what I am, I don't need that recognized by the game. It's 200+ years after everything got laid to waste. I just assume people stopped caring about ethnicity besides the dichotomy of Human vs Ghoul.

I don't really see a problem there. The race options all looked pretty terrible in the system. All they did was maybe speed up the clunky character creation. Now that things seem pretty seamless, I see no need for any such aid in character creation. Look at how quickly they were able to turn whatever the default was into a black dude.

On the bright side, character creation actually looks like you can DO something with faces! In FNV and F03, I couldn't shake the feeling I couldn't make a face that was different from the default without greatly exaggerating SOMETHING.

Some of those sliders in previous games, I'd crank them to min and max and go "...WTF did I just change...?"

Guess you could RP him as a character, and then when you return to work... Tell him the stories of his adventures.
