Racial Ablities Confirmed!

Post » Thu Jun 23, 2011 4:50 pm

Well no matter what race you pick, you are Dragonborn. We’re kind of showing this guy because he’s very on-the-nose for the tone of the game so that people can understand it easily. But you can be any of the races; you can be an Argonian lizard who is Dragonborn and sorry I forgot the other part of the question... oh how do they react? It’s mostly a flavour thing. There’s a little bit of, this is a little bit harder, you can’t do this with a race but only a little bit -- it’s more dialogue flavour than anything.

Then you do have different powers based on which race you pick. So your skills start out differently, then each of the different races has their own powers, like some cool special abilities.

Taken from the Ausgamers interview. (Finally, a competent interview! If the guy who interviewed Todd ever reads this, good job and you just earned a place in the good books of the fourmites here.)

So yeah, Racial Abilities are confirmed. DIscuss, and talk about what you think or wat to be one.

And don't worry all you lizard fans, Argonians are confirmed too.

I can't say I'm surprised, considering that with class and birthsigns gone, it seemed like race is the only really major choice you'll make at character creation, sure, there's also choosing your name and customizing your appearance, but those are cosmetic things, here, I mean choices that will have a degree of impact on gameplay. Since race is really the only choice you make at the start, I would have been rather surprised if Bethesda decided to take the impact of that out too, still, if anyone was concerned about that, or if anything STILL thought the choice of race might be removed, then it's pretty clear that they don't need to worry anymore.

Did the series sink so low that we're actually celebrating the racials are STILL in?

Gives us hope that other things may have special abilities as well.

@ Nantes-Yes, it sank so low that we rejoice when something good is confirmed. Everything ES is being dumbed down for these non lore loving n00bs.

Maybe this time there will be no abilities that lose usefulness after level 6, befriending basic animals and summoning ghosts aren't much use at level 50.

I would like the racials to go beyond a maxed skill. A Khajiit should always run faster.

non-lore? Skyrim is very much still based on the rich lore! Nords are racist against elves, dwemers have their own ruins again, and the argonian slaves have rebelled against their masters. Theres still a huge amount of old and new lore!

Tbh more effects are needed, would be nice if there were different effects ala Heat, Fire, Magical Fire, so that Dunmer are actually resistant to Heat...since they burn like everyone else and Nords to Cold not frost or Magical Frost, you know sensibility :)

I know it has lore, but the game was simplified by those new to Elder Scrolls.

You are confusing the TES series with the community's faith in Bethesda.

I'm pretty sure Skyrim is going to make Oblivion look way inferior (And I think Oblivion is a pretty good game :P ).

After all, if they are letting us sleep in beds of deceased owners. How could they not know what they are doing? XD

That was the effect of Oblivion's terrible level-scaling, which is fixed now.

Yeah I never got that it's like "Greater power: Control beast up to level six". And it's just like "What the [censored] is this crap they're trying to pass as a "greater power"?!" It's supposed to be that races advantage over other races, assumingly the power that could have put them on the "fittest" side of survival of the fittest..and you mean to tell me that they can control rats, crabs and wolves at best? (with JUST their greater power)

Probably the 2nd best news of the day behind Expansion DLC's and Old World Blues getting a release date.

That means
Argonians will probably have underwater breathing
Redguards will have Adrenaline rush
Orcs will have Berserk, etc

Now are those effects going to be the same as they were in Oblivion, probably not. The Racial Abilities will probably be even stronger this time around if Beth is truly serious about making Race choice matter.

That was confirmed since always. People just read over things. It wasnt a big focus on previous, but it was always said there would be racial powers. Again, people just tend to read overthings, especially when all they care about is ranting.

I must have missed the memo that this was something we were actually worried about. I had assumed all along that starting skills and abilities would be different between races.

I'll be excited when they add useful ones, like Dunmer's resistance to fire being 50% no matter what the power of the fireball hitting you was, same with Nords and Ice.

It was never my worry that there would be special abilities for each race in the game. Moreso if the special abilities would be potent enough, interesting in terms of effect, and actually "special" abilities, not just bland or mundane additions.

So bethesda should completely alienate people who have never picked up an elder scrolls game before? How is the series supposed to improve if only the same people keep buying the game while the price of producing the games goes up?
