Radiant Story and Races

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 8:17 am

I seem to post almost exclusively in connection to Radiant Story... odd... anyway I thought of something that intrigued me about Radiant Story's possibilities while playing Morrowind last night.

It seemed kind of silly to me that an outlander can do everything in Morrowind and there doesn't seem to be much of a difference as to what race you are, as I would think the racial prejudices that are clearly a big part of the lore would have more of an effect. In Oblivion there are some slight differences to what happens when you talk to someone depending on what race you are but it's still not very fleshed out.

Here's my question, does Radiant Story enable them to completely change the quest conditions based on your race? Ex. I go to that Dunmer refugee camp near Morrowind as a Dunmer and they ask me to participate in lynching an Argonian who wandered into the camp as revenge for the conquest of Morrowind. I can choose to free the Argonian or help them lynch him. Fast forward 300 hours of gameplay and I'm playing again as an Argonian, this time I go to the camp and everyone starts clamoring and calling for MY head. They are going to lynch me and I have to get free or start killing enough of them that they'll settle down and let me go. As a Nord they might tell me to mind my own business or it might give me the option to stop the lynching, but I won't be asked to participate in the hanging like the Dunmer would be. This would make the race and gender you choose WAY more important! You think this is one of the things that makes Radiant Story so cool or am I just dreaming?

To those who are just going to say, it's lots of work I'd rather they focus on unique dungeons blah blah blah, they made "Dynamic Snow" so I don't think this game is lacking on these kinds of features in general. This would be a very Elder Scrolls type feature and definitely worth the extra labor (which in theory Radiant Story is supposed to reduce in this case).

As good an idea as that is, I doubt it will be there. If it was, it'd be great.

Yes thats possible.

As far as I can tell about the little info that we have been given on the Radiant Story, it looks like as long as you have hit some prerequisite for a quest to be given then it will. There will be.... i dont know.... for example.......

A radient story line about a ogre who stole some special potatos (sound familier) anyway the prerequisites are that the player is a Orc or Nord and is between levels 6-15. It then looks for the nearest cave that you have not visited and tells you that they last saw the ogre heading for 'unvisited' Cave, would it be possible that you get them back.

Now there would also be similar quests for the other races or levels where perhaps the enemy or item stolen would be different. Thats what I understand radient story quests to be.

This means unless you pass the same NPC at the same level as the same race then you may never get given that quest by that NPC in another playthrough. This goes someway to help make different playthrough significantly different

Yeah, I think it's more than that though because they say they are using it as the tool to design ALL quests, even the ones that have mostly scripted elements. In my example with the dunmer lynchings, the scripted event is the same, but your participation in it is slightly different. This allows things to be very complex without lots of extra V.A. or writing. I would love for example for my male character to NOT be able to join a witch coven (unless my lore is mixed up) because it's a sisterhood. If I want to do the witch faction quests, I'll have to start a female character etc. Some people will whine I'm sure about not being able to do everything, but I think it would make replay WAY cooler.

I agree that there will be much much more to it, including you reputation etc

Obviously my example was a very simple version, but I agree that every quest should not be available on every playthrough. It should be a game of choices, there should be some variation based on the way I have completed other quests or which guilds I am a member of.

There were some quests based on the level of reputation in oblivion and this is the next logical step.

Here is the condition window of dialogs in Morrowind.

As you see race, six, rank etc are default conditions which can be extended by additional scripts(functions). I think radiant story will feature similar or more complex condition sets.

They had that quest you could only do as a man in Oblivion. I forgot what it was called but they were the females who tricked married men into giving them all their stuff.

I'd like to see more of that in Skyrim.

Yeah, I remember that now! I guess I never played as a woman in Oblivion, partly because I could do everything with so few restrictions I didn't have more than one character in Oblivion that I really played... My main character was leader of every guild etc... made replaying less interesting... That's something I'm enjoying about Morrowind's faction system more now that I'm replaying that...
