Radiation Storms

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 8:34 pm

The radiation storms have a lot of potential, especially now with more buildings being open, without the need of loading a separate cell. I can imagine being in doors while looking outside at the gusts of wind, and lightning. Listening to thunder off in the distance, the faint pitter-patter of rain hitting the roof. Dynamic weather really helps a games atmosphere. I always wished it would rain in Fallout 3/FNV. Other than S.T.A.L.K.E.R , Witcher 3 has some really good dynamic weather and storms imo. I'd love something similar in Fallout 4 even if only for atmospheric purposes. It's great to know it will also have gameplay ramifications-

STALKER's storms were the first time I felt ~threatened~ by the environment. The alarm would sound and I'd start freaking out --- how far am I from a base? Is there a cave nearby where I can burrow deep enough? Ah! Enemies! I have no time to fight you, I have to get out of the weather!

While those were exciting storms, to be sure, after a while they got more irritating then anything so I hope they remain relatively rare (severe radiation storms, anyway --- regular rain or light storms every now and again are fine). As someone noted above, disabling fast travel during a storm would almost be necessary to get the full impact of it, otherwise you just "teleport" away from the storm, wait a few hours and then go back.

I am really looking forward to storms and weather in Fallout 4. I've not played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. but I did watch the YouTube video and have to admit that looks pretty awesome. Storms like that would really add to the atmosphere. So yes, bring it on!

Be one of the cool kids - never use fast travel. But I think your solution would work. Already have "Can't fast travel while in combat." Just need "Can't fast travel with storm approaching." Simple.

Ive played a fair bit of Stalker over the years with varying mods and games, and I always loved the blowouts in those. If the rad storms in Fallout 4 manage to inspire the same sense of dread and crazy scramble for shelter I would be very happy.

I always loved the blowouts in the STALKER games, if they add something like that into Fallout 4 that'd be great. One of the things the blowouts would do in various STALKER mods would be to increase / add mutant spawns and intensity, be interesting if a similar idea was brought over to this series - imagine a normal Deathclaw getting driven into an even greater killing frenzy after going thru a radstorm or a pack of feral ghouls getting all sorts of enhanced abilities after going through a storm. I also wouldn't mind some form of the STALKER anomolies being a separate type of environmental hazard you have to watch out for rather than just radiation - the environment can kill you directly rather than just slowly via radiation.

They sound awesome.. But I also thought cliffracers in Morrowind were cool at first...

I'm sure they will be cool then become annoying as hell over time. :) at least they are adding weather elements which is a nice thing.

I love this idea. I think adding enemy spawns and especially, enemy buffs due to the radiation storms would be a brilliant feature. It would truly make approaching/current rad. storms something to truly fear. I'm not sure it would fit with every type of creature but ghouls and the like make sense.

That's nothing compared to the appropriately named Atmosfear mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fXPxR3biFg

But no, i don't expect anything that scary and awesome

Edit: Oh, someone beat me to it. Well, here's another one. Take note of what happens to his health when he gets hit by the wave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0Z6CxmiCwY
Even scarier at night

I'm picturing everyone in diamond city running out of their homes to fight the storm with iron daggers.

I guess ghouls could be a pain in storms as the lightning heals them and reduces your health. I don't think most other critters we know should be changed by it. Deathclaws don't seem to care for radiation, super mutants are next to immune to rads.

You could have bits like "arrrh a storm" *runs and hides* turns on pipboy light and finds the cave filled with deathclaws. :P

I like the OP's idea of a radiation storm but doesn't last to long. Or I wouldn't mind seeing that mega sand storm from the movie Mad Max Fury Road somehow inplemented into the base game or mod.

First time I have seen that mod, but it's really funny that something so devastating and violent actually breathes life and color into such a bleak world. The blowout was beautiful to watch.
