I don't think RAGE and Fallout will be that much alike gameplay wise, aside from having a similar post-apocalyptic theme.

well its not a rpg so you won't be developing your character and having to scrounge for everything, i think Rage is gonna be really good, anyone into post apocalyptic worlds with good fps mechanics and excellent battles, this game is gonna be awesome, i play wolfenstein, made by ID also, and the FPS elements and combat are really good, then enemies are really challening, tactical and game mechanics are polished and the environments are well made, so this game isn't gonna be a flop.

i played some metro 2033 and that was pretty good, but i'm not a pc gamer these days, my pc could handle stalker fine, i just don't like sitting at my pc to play games but i thought about, also stalker is coming out to the consoles next year so i will be getting it for my xbox, but i did look for it actually when i went to walmart the other day for pc but they didn't have, so i might order it actually for my pc, i know i would like stalker, i'm really big into post apocalyptic games.

I doubt Stalker is really playable on a console. Stalker 2 is supposed to be cross platform but it's not a couch game at all.

It's tough. The NPCs are as powerful as you. The first mission where you try to take down some bandits is where most people quit. They will kill you. One shot quite often. There is no room, no slop, stick your head out at the wrong time .. you are dead.

The Ukrainians/Russians make games to make you feel inadequate and pitiful. The US games are supposed to make you feel like a hero. Metro 2033 is a US style game made by the Ruski developers for money. A walk in the park on hardcoe hard. Just a few hours. I have many hundreds in all three Stalker games.

I don't believe the gameplay will be as in Fallout.
I expect a better game too.

This isn't true, for one RAGE isn't an RPG, Borderlands is. RAGE looks much better than Borderlands in terms of the detail of the environment too, but the graphics seemed to suit the game in Borderlands. RAGE is an FPS, Borderlands is an RPG. Simple.

Borderlands is a RPS, and the graphics don't suit it. The original look and atmosphere of the game would have made it a much better game.

Any game that comes out in the future that's a post-apocalyptic FPS is going to be compared to Fallout. Borderlands wasn't even a very good game. Don't get me wrong, it was good and quite fun, but overall it just fell WAY too short of its potential. Rage looks amazing.

As far as it being like Fallout, the only comparison is that its FPS and it has a post-apoc setting. Other than that, they really aren't alike.

But Fallout isn't an FPS. Yes, shooting became a much bigger part of the series since Fallout 3, and they switched to a first-person perspective, but it's still an RPG at heart.

i wish people would stop making this comparison, because it builds up all sort of unrelated hype. RAGE is not fallout 3. it is also not borderlands. it's been in production longer than either of those games so the whole argument about 'who ripped off who' is moot. imo the game is a tech demo -- hopefully a decent game to boot. it's id's equivalent to crysis. crysis was crap, but the engine was solid. as with tech4 (doom 3, quake 4, prey, etc), i'm sure many other developers will use tech5 to build upon the engine, regardless of whether RAGE will be a good game or not once the SDK gets licensed - or dare i say it - goes public. the real issue here is ultimately the tech5 engine, not the game.

I'd disagree with Crysis being merely a tech demo or it being crap. It was an excellent open world shooter - well, the first half of it anyway, it went downhill during the second half...
I don't expect Rage to be just a tech demo either, they showed off a lot of interesting gameplay elements already, plus they've been working on it for too long for it to be just a pretty engine and nothing more. I imagine they added a lot of content during the last two years, as the engine itself looked and run pretty well years ago.

Also, last time I heard the tech5 engine will only be availabe to other Bethesda/Zenimax devs.

While there are some similarities in themes... unlike Fallout 3, RAGE is a first person shooter at it's core. Remember, this is made by id Software, the guys that pioneered the genre (Wolfenstein, DOOM, Quake).

this WOULD be a surprise, given ID's record of outsourcing their engines -- but i guess anything's possible since the disaster that was "Wolfenstein" forced ID's move from activision to zenimax. i'm not saying you're wrong, but the likelyhood of the engine being used in other games seems overwhelmingly ...likely. tech4? spread thinner than ... well... something very thin, on toast. HL2? UT3? not as 'exclusive' as ID's engine sure, but what, something like a bazillion million games use them? i have no reason to believe that tech5 will be a zenimax exclusive, and if they're smart they'll take the money and release the source code once RAGE's profits start dying down.

It is unusual for id, but thats what Todd Hollenshead said to Eurogamer:

As for Weapon and Fighting mechanics, it'll be a completely different game play experience. One is an FPS with RPG elements, the other is an RPG with FPS elements. It isn't really fair to compare the two, a comparison with Borderlands would be a lot more relevant.

That being said, the exploration in RAGE will have more of a point, kinda like Borderlands but more open. Essentially, there won't be large expanses of emptiness like in FO3 or FO:NV, what you do explore will be more condensed to keep game play more action oriented without being as limited as Borderlands.

It sounds like the atmosphere will be more geared toward a serious tone like Fallout, but this tone will be broken every now and then by certain elements of game play, most notably the use of Vehicles and the ability to have races for fun.

Looting will be used, not with just weapons, ammo and money like Borderlands, but not as expansive as Fallout with all of the random stuff layin' about that can be picked up but don't really serve a purpose. Stuff that can be taken have a point to them, like crafting special items I would suspect (there will be craftable items, I know that for sure).

I'm curious about NPC interaction and storyline, something Fallout did perfectly while Borderlands had nothing of the sort.

That's about all I can think of, can anybody else think of a major mechanic I left out??

Though they are both post apocolypic. It seems there are a few mutant gangs and a few human, but I'm not seeing a real faction war SO FAR ( my info may be a tad off correct me) on the other hand, the gameplay seems a little more fast paced. It seems exploration will be more inside ruins and places rather than out in the wilderness.
