Rain and Snow

Post » Sat Jan 01, 2011 12:06 pm

In both Morrowind and Oblivion, rain and snow fell right through everything in the outdoor world - tents, rock overhangs, huge trees, porches and bridges, logs - anything that did not have its own interior. The assumption is that, with snow supposedly accumulating accurately on objects, the "fall through" effect will be fixed. If not, I hope its considered - it takes away from the immersion of the game if you're unable to actually escape the storm without going inside a structure.

On top of that and more complex, it'd be nice to have outdoor weather effects translated to interior zones through windows, audio and lighting, as was done in some Oblivion and Morrowind mods.

And, a last point, more a personal opinion: Howling winds.

In Morrowind we could experience a massive thunderstorm with strong winds and a downpour, and we could also experience a small shower. Each was distinct, the small shower didn't have all the loud blowing winds and lightning, it was just a sprinkle, while the storms would have louder howling winds, thunder lightning, ect.

In Oblivion, every time it rains, the winds that accompany it makes you feel like your standing on top the tallest mountain during a tornado. I'd like to see some variation in the weather like we've had in Morrowind.

I AGREE!

Also snow and rain when its windy shouldn't fall straight down.

If enough people reply to things like this they might be changed. A randomized set of lighting and sound effects seems to be one of the easier things to implement in a game. So have my plus one.

I'd like the lighting to not svck, like it did in Oblivion. Also, extinguishable light sources would be cool, too, but that's just me being greedy.

I'm seeing a lot of people saying, Morrowind this and Morrowind that, which makes me hopeful that Bethesda developers may pay some attention to things that people liked before, especially small details that add to immersion, like the piecemeal armor, or the randomized sounds. Big gameplay mechanics are probably better left to professional designers, but little things can really make a difference.

I have noticed a trend in game developers, they often make a great first game (considering Morrowind they're first in this scenario) that attaches a huge fan base, they're next game is not received quite so well, but they come in and blow everyone out of the water on they're third. They often improve on many aspects of the second game, and go back to they're earlier traditions, even without the raging fanbase revolution yelling "we wan't the old back"

Let's hope Skyrim wont be another nail in the cofin... Oblivion had it's good sides, but lacked in others...

I don't think Oblivion was bad enough to warrant the purchase of a coffin...

With this new engine, they talk of accumulation which is great for the weather effects. At certain times, there is more snow than at another time. I like to feel my world is dynamic not static. Weather should have it's own tempo of sorts in the game. From short to long storms, to storms that hardly do anything to storms that are powerful and destructive such as damaging trees and maybe small forrest fires. Blizzards as well. Maybe even have a little hinderance to movement. Make it a case of Man vs. Nature. Although, don't get too carried away with the idea, I don't want to battle weather all the time. Make it a rare occasion.

The weather really sets the mood. In the game Hard Rain, the rain really gives the game a gloomy overcast. And in a game like Skyrim, it's appropriate to have a darker more bleak setting. There's a civil war. It's the dawn of dragons. Having epic storms or long overcasts could add to the grim setting.

With all this talk of DX10/11 being out.. I'm not sure DX9 and a simple step forward in engine capability will be able to do many of these things. I also think this whole "cumulative precipitation" that they're talking about with snow is far fetched and misleading. If Crysis 2 or Metro 2033 doesn't have real precipitation, I doubt the new TES engine will include it. 1 thing I'd like to see is no clipping though, that would be nice.

I like it too... I′ve installed the wheater mods in Oblivion and Fallout, and both improves a lot the game!

But, making an all new engine, i realy hope we can see cloth simulations interacting with the wind, and maybe some "wet visual effect" in the cloths when raining - (is it ask too much?)

Yes. Only Havok Behaviour is in, not Havok cloth. Also, wet visual effects could be done so much better in DX10/11.. but it seems we're stuck with DX9 so it's the same across all platforms. :brokencomputer:

Got my vote. Good points.

Plus, if there was a hardcoe mode (akin to Fallout 3/NV), you could have cold as another worry. Gotta stay warm...

THIS!

Cold should have a worry for sure! You will need to have some fur vets in your inventory if you wish to go to an snow mountain area! This would be great!

DX9 is not a problem since other multi-plataform games like Red Dead Redemption and Call of Juarez 2 have these effects.

If not Havok Cloth, i hope the dev team develops their own cloth simulation for the creation engine. It′s a must have resource for this game! Please Beth!!!!

This would be ao awesome. hearing a thunderstorm or the whistling of icy winds inside the warmth of a tavern.

I dunno if it's too late for a hardcoe mode, but this is a must if there's gonna be one.

Morrowind had great sound effects! Inside the dwemer ruins with the creepy machine sounds, the whispering in tombs and so on. I hope wind makes a creepy/ lonely tune when blowing through icecaves and so on. And when its just a little wind I would love to hear the leaf on trees. If they could make rain have different sound when hitting certain objects it would add alot feeling. For instance when the rain hits some buckets or something hollow and made by steel it should add a little extra sound.

I'd hope they used Havok cloth, it is actually a very ideal solution and from the asset creation perspective, I'd really love to be creating assets with it. I am almost positive it is currently not in, I have some good screen shots to look at, and it all looks straight rigged.

The BIGGEST thing that got my goat was the fact that the snow moved with you in oblivion, I have no idead why gamesas pulled that, but if they have it in Skyrim it would really mess things up.

Skyrim is going to have WIND ladies and gentleman and it will effect much in the game including weather. Archery and magic projectile combat should be very interesting.
