Rain

1 Of the things that annoyed me in both Oblivion & Morrowind Was the rain falling through the celling.. It's not really important but it adds some realistic feeling .. right? :stare:

Don't worry - this will not occur in Skyrim.

That's a petty/easy thing to fix. What I care more about concerning rain is if there will be splash effects, rain puddles, watery surface layers and such. You know, more new stuff that you expect for rain in modern games. Also wondering more if NPCs will be affected by rain/weather, like if they would take shelter when it's raining and complain about it.

Some pretty atmospheric concept artwork of a city in the middle of a storm can be seen in the Art of Skyrim video, with things like a wet sheen to rocky surfaces and hazy "coronas" around lanterns. I think Bethesda's putting just as much effort into rain as they are with snow.

Personally I wouldn't mind if there wasn't collision to it. It wasn't so noticeable in Morrowind where most buildings were squat and didn't have many overhangs, and it only stood out slightly in Oblivion to me.

I would be surprised if this hasn't been remedied.

They have confirmed that they have improved the weather greatly. Including running water on streets during rainstorms, snow buildup as it snows, rain not falling through ceilings, etc.

This hasn't happened in games for years. It's pretty much fixed now.

I actually didn't notice the rain thing at all in Oblivion.

But if the rain didn't have collision, then the snow probably didn't as well, and since they BGS have done so much work on snow in Skyrim, it probably wont happen to snow, and if it wont happen to snow it probably wont happen to rain either. Problem solved. Cheers, have some mead! :foodndrink:

Edit: Kinda got :ninja: 'ed there..

Interesting, I didn't hear anything about the water running along surfaces. Do you remember the source for this, or is it assumed from the "streams" of water we saw in the gameplay trailer?

Just because it's shown in the concept art doesn't mean it will be reflected in the game. If we were talking about visual design, like the architectural style of the buildings in the city, then we might be able to read something from the concept art, but rain falling through objects is not a conscious design choice, obviously, Bethesda does not say "It would look cool for rain to fall through things, let's do that." it's a technical issue, and there really is no reason why Bethesda would draw it into their concept art, therefore, the concept art doesn't tell us much in this regard. Still, I'd think they'd fix this by now, and would be VERY dissappointed if they fail to do so. It just looks stupid and there's really no excuse to have it in modern games, especially not when the developers claim they're doing something really revolutionary with certain weather conditions, dynamic snow sounds impressive, but if in an effort to implement it Bethesda neglects something as basic as this, then I won't be impressed.

You know there are mods fixing that in Morrowind? If it occurs in Skyrim, there will be mods that fix it there, too.

Gothic 4 was supposed to have running water like effects and an amazing rain system. But it was all hype and the rain in the game looked like utter [censored].

I may be mistaken, but I had heard that it used a technique where it makes it appear water is streaming down the sides of buildings, or boxes. The game Stalker does this and it looks great. (on most objects) I thought they had mentioned that in their early news on snow and rain. Perhaps not. :/

The Rain in Stalker may look good for a few seconds, then you realise the rain drop effect its realy just 2 textures being repeated over and over quickly so it doesnt look natural at all. And the water streaming down opbjects happens on all sides of an object so when you are in a buildign the rain will still poor down the walls inside.

Though STALKER is my favorite game.

Do the little details really matter? I always Lol'd in Morrowind when I was in Vivec in a stone doorway with rain still falling on me.

Yes, the little details matter an awful lot. Properly done rain is like, my video game atmosphere fetish, and that it was done so rubbishly in Oblivion is something that makes me sad.

STALKER's Rain may not be perfect, but it's still some of the best rain I've seen so far.

The rain falling through buildings was an engine error. Skyrim's on a new engine, and since they put so much effort into the dynamic snow of this engine, I'm nearly positive that rain will collide with objects.

Came in this thread to post this ;) Surely Skyrim can accomplish proper rain environments if Notch can.

Of course they can; question is if they are lazy enough to even care about it. It may be just me, but it feels like if Bethesda has set the "technology bar" pretty low.
