Rain/Thunderstorms

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 9:20 pm

This really isn't a complaint, just wondering if anyone else felt the same. I really miss the thunderstorms from Morrowind, they were so loud and just...well violent really. The first time I walked into Balmora it was storming like crazy, and when I ran into the inn to get out of the rain I still heard it faintly coming from outside. It was really immersive to me! At first I thought they literally forgot to add sound for the rain, until I turned my volume waaay up, it's so quiet. Yeah I could fiddle with the audio options and stuff so it's not even a big deal, but even graphically I kinda liked it over Skyrim's since you could see stores' signs flying all over the place because of the wind, banners doing the same, etc. Maybe I just havn't seen a real storm yet, and just small rains? I dunno. Anyway, just rambling.

This.
I've been in forested areas of Skyrim where the lighting was blinding and the booming thunder rattled a lamp.
No worries...you'll see it soon enough. Remember; seasons and weather change with the months.

I get rain/thunderstorms all the time.

The weather in Skyrim is widely varied. There are snow storms, light snow fall, clear sunny days, overcast days, foggy days, light showers, heavy showers, thunderstorms...

I haven't played any other game that had such a wide range of weather effects. Mostly games that have weather have 2-3 kinds: Clear, Rainy, Snowy.

Oh, no kidding? Well that's definitely cool and makes my post moot. Thanks for sharing

Anyone else noticed that rain falling through roofs is back? Or at least it appeared that way on the Haafingar/Reach border with rain coming through Dwemer towers.

You can always set it to thunderstorm with the console! ^_^

Perhaps wait until spring, and then hang out in the more rainy areas? That's when a lot of thunderstorms would happen, i think.

Yeah it totally slipped my mind that it would more likely to rainy/rain harder in a different region as well as the different seasons. Thanks for the tip on the storm call, but I don't necessarily want it to be so violent people are dying  Yes the rain collision is annoying, so hopefully a kind soul will do a modfix for it once the CK is out!

Yet another thing Morrowind does better. Curse you Bethesda for dumbing down the weather... :nono: I guess the booming thunder and rain that can penetrate solid objects is too much for casual gamers to handle.

But seriously... yes, I do miss it.

Firstly, my post clearly wasn't all that serious. How did you fail to pick up on that?

Secondly, i'm well aware there are thunderstorms in Skyrim. But the thunder doesn't seem anywhere near as loud.

With the storm call shout, you can make lighting hit the ground around you.

It's 'cause it is a screen effect, not an actual texture like the blowing snow. If it was a texture, it would possibly be too much of a resource drain on the consoles (although an option for powerful pcs to have it would be nice). It's not that Bethesda was being lazy (there are caves that have this "textured rain").

The only non-serious sounding thing you said was the quip about booming thunderstorms being too much for some people.

Protip: Sarcasm doesn't translate well over text without smilies.

You also continued on to say you miss them.

There's the shout but it's not like Skyrim has an epic type of atmosphere take Bioshock and what the Elder Scrolls series used to have instead of just large but hallow landscapes so to speak.

So you took the part about Bethesda "dumbing down the weather" seriously?

I'll try and make it more blatantly obvious next time. Just for you.

The thing is, there are some many Morrowind fanatics on this forum, that I wouldn't be surprised if they posted something like that seriously.

Funny, I just bumped my characters head on an inn's signage tonight and it reminded me exactly what the OP is talking about. I saw the sign start to move back and forth from my character hitting it and it completely reminded me that we're missing violent wind, rain, thunderstorms, OR I've just not been to any areas where it's going on maybe.

Violent weather to me really lends to the immersion into the game. Sure many games that have it is just eye candy, but wouldn't it be grand if there was really violent storms, thatch roofs catch on fire when lightning hits them, trees blow down from violent winds etc. Yeah, weather really adds to immersion in games for many people and I would have really loved to see much more of it in Skyrim.

I have no idea how I never noticed this on nexus. Looks like a real good start, now I just need huge gusts of winds blowing stuff around and I'm set. Thanks for linking that though!
