Random CTDs mostly on transition, can't explain why..

Post » Sun May 30, 2010 11:03 pm

Hey,

I have always had random CTDs, with no real pattern. Recently it's been really starting to annoy me. I've tried alot of things:

Things I've tried:
  • Changing OBGE versions, at the moment using v2
  • Underclocking my HD4870
  • Changing PSU to better quality
  • Removing all mods EXCEPT for FCOM, and re-enabling them ONE by ONE
  • I use weOCPS
  • I have applied the 4GB memory patch to Oblivion
  • And I also use Oblivion Stutter Remover

The removing and re-enabling of mods actually caused bloat, since it was an existing save, and I just repaired it with Bash.

The weird thing is some of the CTDs were replicaitable. For example, I was in Weynon Priory just as I was starting the main quest, then I fast travel to the stables outside of Skingrad, when I enter Skingrad through the door, it would crash. I could repeat it and it would crash over and over, as I was removing mods, until all that was left was FCOM. However, if I fast travel directly to Skingrad, it wouldn't crash, then I tried to go back to Weynon Priory to repeat it and this time, no crash.

Crashs mostly happen when: Loading new area, entering or leaving houses/cities and occasionally fast travelling.

Here is my mod list:

Note: I removed some non-essential mods, just to try reduce this problem. And anything not related to my pure magic character at the moment.

Try the Oblivion Stutter Remover. It helps cut down on random crashes on cell transitions.

Oh, that I didn't know. I will try that.

Edited main post to reflect the options I forgot to include:

I already have:
  • weOCPs
  • Oblivion Stutter Remover

Sorry to say it, but Stutter Remover's heap replacement has been one of the main causes of area-transition crashes on my system. (I run a 4870 as well, and it's not very forgiving.) So you mght try disabling heap replacement in its .ini file temporarily, and see if the crashes clear up--they did on mine. I hated doing that because I love the speed of the heap replacers, but my game runs almost as smooth without, and I can do without the annoyance of having to save every three minutes.

Before doing that, I would definitely try changing the OSR heap replacer first . . . the benefits of heap replacement are just too great, and for most people, at least one of them works perfectly. (If you're using Vista or Windows 7, try using the Windows heap, which I think is option 5 . . . almost as fast as the more aggressive ones, but rock solid for most people. That one worked for me on my last PC, when none of the others did.)

However, the fact that these crashes are mostly happening on transitions makes it seem like a memory thing to me. On my heavily modded game and reasonably beefy PC, I was having random crashes on maybe one out of every five or six area transitions. That was often enough to be infuriating. What fixed it? Enabling Oblivion to use more memory with the 4GB enabler. I was fortunate enough to be using a 64bit OS with 4 gigs of RAM, so I could take full advantage of the LAA patch discussed in http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1076274. If you are too, then you must use this patch. Seriously. Installing that patch, which took seconds, made a huge difference for me. I went from crashing roughly every ten minutes to being able to play for two-hour stretches before getting gradual slowdowns that eventually make me close and re-launch the game. I have not had an actual CTD in days. No guarantee this will work for you. But if you're using 64-bit Vista or 7, it's definitely worth a shot. Even if you're not, consider reading that thread. Lots of good information there.

Thanks daemondarque and CardTrick,

I will definetly try tweaking (or removing) Heap replacement.

I forgot about that aswell, I already use the 4GB patch as I use 64bit Windows 7 and have 6GB ram. My system is fairly beefy: 2.8ghz i7, 6gb trip. channel DDR3 2000mhz, 64gb Solid State Drive. Weakest link is definetly the HD4870 which is also underclocked. (Edited main post to reflect this.)
