Random Encounters during Fast Travel.

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:05 am

This was said somewhere else but that topic got barely any attention, here's my take on how to "Fix" fast travel.
Let me just say that I'm perfectly fine with the way Fast Travel is now, but I know a way that could improve it, and I think you all know what I mean.

Random encounters.

Let's say you're trying to fast travel, you get X amount of distance and Uh-Oh! A gang of bandits has interrupted your fast travel! You need to kill them in order to Continue your travel! (As in, once you kill them, you can go back into the map and fast travel, risking another bandit attack.)

There's countless things you could do for this instead of Bandit Attacks, but it just stood out in my mind.

Opinions?

Dear god I hope they don't do this. Fast travel is supposed to be fast. Tossing in random obstacles is just a pointless waste of time.

The problem with that is it can't be every time you fast travel. It's nice to have a chance of being interrupted but not every time, that would just get annoying. My take is that only being able to fast travel to cities and villages would be the best version. But it has already been confirmed that fast travel is the same as in Oblivion, where you have to travel to a location first to be able to fast travel to it again. That's fine with me, I don't have any problem with Oblivion's fast travel, it's is necessary for the world the size of Oblivion and Skyrim. Also, the characters I RP a different way, I just don't use fast travel except when i need to get from one side of the province to the other which is on occasion but not that common and those RP times take a LONG time and occasionally if I'm using a melee character, not having fast travel gets annoying because melee fighting was time consuming and running around everywhere was extremely time consuming.

I'd like fast travel to be limited to -

1. Guides - pay them, they take you where you want to go assuming they know where it is. They would have limitations, only taking you through relatively safe paths to safe locations.
2. Teleportation - pay a mage, they will teleport you around the mage guilds, assuming there are mage guilds in Skyrim.
3. Mark/Recall - as in Morrowind.

As I stated in another topic, I am not completely against Fast Travel encounters if they can keep them interesting and not happen every time or even every other time I use it and can make it be somewhat believable. I don't want to walk from here to there killing every enemy I have seen along the way to fast travel back a minute later and get attacked by anything, much less the same things I’ve been killing, during my trip, for at least a day or two anyway.

No Mark/Recall please, I'm glad they got rid of it because spontaneous teleportation doesn't fit TES. It had been in the other TES games but it came to the realization that teleporting didn't fit TES, portals do however so taking portals from one mage's guild to the other is fine.
