Random Encounters when Fast Travelling

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 2:46 am

A lot of people don't like to use map marker fast travel because it seems something of an exploit, a shortcut or simply a breakaway from immersion. I am - generally - of that opinion too, but if all I'm wanting to do is do the loot-clearing-run, I get lazy...play time can be limited, I admit taking the 'easy way' so I don't have to spend 45 minutes walking back and forth.

Anyways, would it seem less of an exploit etc if you could get ambushed along the way? Many a classic RPG had random encounters. Some were simply an annoyance and some were a challenge that could be the end of you. I'd love to see this implemented in the fast travel system, either using the map markers or the carriages or both.

Thoughts?

I voted yes, but only on the condition that one of the Final Fantasy random battle sounds plays when you get attacked.

I tend to fast travel because a feel lazy, so I'll say NO. It's a relief when you just "run there, kill that, run back, run there, kill that, run there, kill that, run there" for a while, doing side quests. Encounters, at that kind of times, would just tend to be a pain, even if they were pretty occasional. But then, I always found that random encounters, in most games, are juste irritating little "slow-you-down" events. So, definitely, NO.

That is a good point, I remember getting frustrated at the random encounters - ironically in Final Fantasy VII :D (one of the best games ever!). Haha and yep the camera should swirl and spin accompanied by the music

My thinking is to maybe put a bit more consequence, or something, on the ease of map-click-fast travel. Even if you find the fast travel vendors, that satisfies the Immersion Bug but it's really not much less an exploit of laziness.

I'd rather have the Final Fantasy victory music for when I clear out the last enemy in a dungeon and I take my victory lap back to the entrance.

What is this FF? I would find that very annoying when trying to get somewhere quickly.
