Random Equipment

Post » Tue Aug 31, 2010 3:30 pm

In order to prevent absolutely everybody from having (and thus looking) the same equipment, I think weapons and armor should be made of different components or sections that are generated at random, like the chiliocosm of zany guns found in Borderlands.

Take for example, a simple cuirass. It could be divided between the upper lower thorax, thus allowing the cuirass to be mostly leather with metal plate on the upper-chest. There could even be the potential for variable accoutrements such as spikes, fur collars, pteruges, etc.

I'd be happy with having the ability to equip different pauldrons with a different cuirass. More Morrowind-esque style customization in terms of equipment.
Splitting up the cuirass into multiple parts seems overkill, though.

I would love this. Would also be a much needed assentive to dungeon crawl. Uniqueness in loot is what oblivion's quasi random loot needed.

I would like a more Morrowindesque type system as well. This way you can really customize How you want to look and not be randomized. I don't think I would like the randomness. I didn't play Borderlands so I am not sure how well it works or not.

Also it's "learnt" not learn or learned. I am not making fun, but just trying to teach. Yeah I know, me who makes so many spelling mistakes
correcting someone else. :)

Hmm, it could work I suppose. And I'd love to be able to have mostly every weapon or armour I pick up to be random and unique in appearance, but I'm not so sure.

Isn't it a little too late for something like this to be added? Also, it sounds like it could be done with the enchantments one items and with enemies...

No.

And I say that because Borderlands is one of the most overrated games ever.

So Bill youre opposed to an idea based solely on your bias towards a popular game, and not because of the idea itself? Lol.

Personally I love loot randomization. The only problem I had with Borderlands in this regard is that it did not allow you to modify weapons. I should be able to swap a scope from one gun to another, especially when its the exact same gun otherwise.

As long as we can swap out the parts of our armour in addition to more varied and random drops, I think itd be cool(even if its purely cosmetic).

Another method of making each item of gear unique is adding bum mapped and tessellated decals over some certain parts of them, so the more a weapon is used and damaged, you can add tears and rust stain and breaks in the surface of the metallic parts of them and add tear or bump decals over armors and other items.

Although being able to change the texture and shininess of different specific points of items to make them unique is a great way as well, like a jeweled weapon or armor that can have different decorations and textures in certain parts of them, and add to them the damage decals and they would look as unique as you like.

Yea, pretty much.

Besides. The System wasn't at all intresting in Borderlands. Every weapon still looked alike, just with diffrent effects.

yeah but that just chooses an item from a list of potential items based on how you play. This is more about the look of armors and making random gear look unique. Because in reality the only people who would have near exact duplicates of armor would be soldiers, random bandits and adventurers would have their own crap.

I would definitely like some unique dressing up options. (face it.. it's dressing up.) It's fun to make a character that feels unique to you .. The screenshots released so far haven't given us much of a clue. We could actually believe from what we've seen of the armor that there are separate pauldrons. Because he's not wearing any. I am really hoping that we can layer armor over clothes again.. Something I dearly miss. That too is yet to be seen. All we've really seen is a couple of pictures of half naked barbarian looking guys.

When loot is random all the cool stuff has bad stats. Also,I thought this is a single player game why does being unique matter? Unless of course, your really jaded then the point is moot anyway.

Just because only you see your character for the most part doesn't mean you don't want him to look good. Have you ever seen TESNexus or PES? They are constantly getting screenshots uploaded and most of them are people showing off their characters.

The guns essentially just had different stats in borderlands. They could do this in TES without naming all the parts involved and it'd make no difference.
Just have whatever the stats for armors/weapons are vary a bit with minimum and maximum values and it'd achieve the same thing. It really wasn't all that amazing or interesting in Borderlands. And I did like Borderlands, just not for the illusion of choice/variety in their weapon system.

I like to feel like I'am apart of the world not a unique snowflake. Then again I play mostly in FPS mode and care more for weapons then gear.

As long as its also visual. Like say a leather chest having steel scale on the briast would have more DR than just a leather chest piece. Dont have to get too crazy, but with crafting already in the game having a couple mods per armour(similar to Fallout NV) would be best.

For Borderlands scopes did much more than just provide stats :P, and a machine gun with shotgun spread is more than just a stat change.

I was so excited when I heard that borderlands was going to have millions of guns combinations. that turned out to be one of my biggest gaming disapointments ever. this is a bad Idea since borderlands weapons all looked the same with a few variations.

I don't think this is a good idea.

If you make armor and weapons able to randomize it will ruin the ability to make them look unique.

another thing that was bad about borderlands random weapons was that you had to pick up new guns so often that there really was no point in having over a million combinations, they should have just had a gun skill. I know the selling point of the game was MORE THAN A MILLION DIFFERENT GUNS, but maybe they should have made more effort to making the difference in the guns something more than just color and gun sights. it was boring and they all started to look the same and it never mattered because I had to pick up a better gun every ten minutes.

I don't think this is a good idea.

this. it would be annoying to have the same pauldons on more than one cuirass. using borderlands technique won't make more variety of armor, but just make a massive collection of armor than is slightly different than the other.

Well, I saw a screenshot of some skeletons with some pretty decrepit looking weapons... I just thought that that was kind of cool.
