Random Topic: Mai'q The Liar

Post » Mon Nov 15, 2010 6:34 pm

A Random Topic!

He's a random person, so he deserves a random topic, yeah?
The weirdest thing he's said to me so far is:
"Some people want things called crossbows, they shoot a special arrow called a bolt. Mai'q thinks these people are idiots."
My first thought: Are the Dev's trying to tell us something? :whistling:

What types of things has Mai'q said to you?

So this is gonna sound really messed up but out of all the characters I've played (like 12 so far, maybe more) and 2 1/2 years of gaming on and off , I have yet to run into M'aiq the Liar, not that I'm remembering. I'm not even sure where he's supposed to hang out.

I refuse to look up little things like this on UESP (where NPCs hang and stuff) unless I've already met them. So one of these days I'll randomly run into this Liar catdude. It'll be an epic moment I'm sure.

He doesn't hang out. He runs along the roads. You have to be quick to open a dialog with him as he shoots by.

Oh, no wonder! He's probably run by me a zillion times. I don't always try to talk to running beastfolk, actually come and think of it I never do. Not any time recently.

Yeah, you've seen him. He's the khajiit in the robe and hood who runs back and forth between Anvil and Leyawiin. Occasionally you'll find him standing outside the gate of either of those cities. His comments are generally answers to complaints about things that were in Morrowind but are left out of Oblivion, like crossbows, levitation, and the travel systems.

Yes, they are! M'aiq the Liar is a kind of "easter egg" type character who occasionally has unique rumors that are references to TES-related things. He was in Morrowind as well. If you're interested, all of the rumors he discusses in Oblivion can be found http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:M%27aiq_the_Liar and, in Morrowind, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:M%27Aiq_the_Liar.

I think this specific M'aiq quote is fitting for you right now, Sycarcious:

"M'aiq wishes he had a stick made out of fishies to give to you. Sadly, he does not."

He does hang out actually.

Spoiler
I most often see him spending time in front of the gate of Leyawin. Just standing there. I'm sure he has other spots too, but they're all in front of city gates, IIRC.

I usually see him standing outside of Anvil gates, but as soon as I exit chat after talking about Rumors he runs away like he's on Skooma.

I spent a long time talking to him, in both Morrowind and Oblivion. I think he hangs out not only in Leyawin but also in Anvil? I have met him twice at night time outside, at least, two different towns as he was talking to a guard. Best character in the game XDD, my horse cannot keep up! Also, I don't think M'Aiq can actually die; I once helped when bandits attacked him and he was unconscious, so killed the bandits and healed him. He ran off!!

"M'aiq knows much, tells some. M'aiq knows many things others do not."

I just like the sombre tone, like he is telling you some profound shard of forgotten knowledge....you never know, some times we think people are fools yet they are not.

I think I've heard all the M'aiq rumours, I talk to him every time I see him and even the rumours I hear from him more than once give me a smile.
And the reason he runs like Usain Bolt is because his Speed & Athletics is 100.

Do not stare directly at them, but there are three pink fireflies sitting on top of an orange gorilla who is eating a branch with a birds nest at the end of it.

In Morrowind, M'aiq could always be counted upon to utter lies with great flair, which him fun. In Oblivion, he's essentially a repository of in-jokes (such as the fishy stick one), and of meta-comments. It's fun to see him around again.

Maiq is great - I see him around Leyawiin all the time. But the first time I played oblivion I actually believed the lie about dragons existing in vanilla gameplay. Needless to say, after fifty level-ups, my mage character was quite ticked off when he could only found minotaur lords. :(
