Rare items

So the idea of this just entered my mind not that long after lending Borderlands to a friend. I'm sure this topic has been brought up before on this forum, but I haven't really been on the forums in months and haven't been involved in an open discussion about it, nor could I find the subject through the forum's search engine, so please be gentle with me in this regard.

The way Oblivion worked is that items scaled solely on level. You wouldn't find any daedric items at level 1, instead you'd find steel or iron items at best. Yet, daedric shrine rewards didn't scale. Also, certain unique items that were quest rewards, scaled to level up until a certain point like around 20-30, making you think twice before completing a quest with a really cool looking unique reward. Now, what if, to an extent of course, the same type of looting system that Borderlands has was added? I'm talking rare types of items. I know Oblivion had something like this where you'd sometimes find enchanted items if you're lucky, but what if they took it a step further and allowed rarer versions, so that the rarer it is the more durability it has as well as the more damage / protection it has, maybe even a different colored item all together but with the same type of material.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I personally like this idea, otherwise why would I make a thread about it? But I can see where others would be against it in that items are manufactured the same way, why should any two items be significantly different unless enchanted by the previous owner?

Bruce: We’re handling leveling stuff similar to how we did in Fallout 3, but with a few new twists that we hope players won’t even notice. The enemies and loot are based on the “encounter zone” you’re in, so it could be higher or lower level than your current level. We do have a new concept of epic or “special” loot that you can randomly find in many cases, regardless of the zone, and you will still get better stuff in the better zones with your level higher. Same goes for quest rewards. We try to make them appropriate for what you did. Sometimes that is random, sometimes that is a set item. There’s a lot of specific stuff that is very powerful, like the Daedric artifacts.

I disliked Borderland's system, a lot of names and prefixes with very few significantly different items, felt shallow; an illusion of choice created by an arbitrary naming system.

Oblivion's items scaling with the player and essentially not existing until you reached high levels was awful, Morrowind's system was fine, as I assume will Skyrim's.

Like the other two i agree LOTS!

What I do know is that Bethesda does look at the most popular mods and ones specifically on balancing. Its how they got the bow being super slow but super powerful. So I hope they took at the leveling Leveled items mod so any leveled items will level up with you. Nothing is more annoying than picking up a wicked sword thats a super artifact but it be useless in 3 levels. This system would give more variety endgame so evryone isn;t just running around in glass or daedric with umbra or goldbrand

I agree with the people who didn't like the Borderlands system. It was a pain since you'd get 50 trillion item drops by killing stuff. (What are radioactive mutant bugs doing with shotguns 'n' crap?) The color coding scheme was silly and added to the whole mess. A lot of the regular items had better stats than the more rare and unique items. Of course, I don't want an item system where it scales to your current level either. I sort of like the system where items have minimum stat requirements to use them. Like you might need to be level 5, or you might need 15 strength, etc.
