It's more fun to stumble across them on your own, but I'll give a hint to one of them: a sweet older lady who lives alone is looking for something. Find her and help her out and she might reward you handsomely.

Familiarize yourself with the normal versions of the weapons you find. Develop your skills with the ones that you like to use most. When you find the unique version of that weapon, you'll then understand what make the unique version more powerful. Don't be in a rush. Yes, it's a huge game to try to find one little item, but exploration is one of this games' charms.

Or you can order the Fallout game guide from Amazon, like I did. It will tell you all you need to know about unique weapons and where to find them.

Or you could spoil all the fun by clicking in on the Wiki where everything is explained in details... No, ghouls are right. It's much funnier finding them on your own or with the hints you can get here on the forum.
Hereis anotherone: Theres a smiling trader in one of the raidernests. He's in possesion of maybe the most powerfull weapon in game, but he's also one of the few good traders. Go find a way to get it from him the sophisticated way, so that you don't have to choose between the weapon and the vendor. It's a challenge, but it's fun and satisfying when you succeed.

+1 for finding goodies without checking the wiki! Way moar fun!

Another hint: a very aggressive person will walk right up to you and insist that you do the right thing.

Do it.

It is a project, but it's worth it.

I'm still looking for things I havent managed to find, and some items I remember finding a long time ago and now I've forgotten where they are so it's almost like finding them from new again.

There are some side quests as well I've never managed to resolve like finding the name of the BOS dude in the Citadel and finding a use for Donovans Wrench etc.

I have used wikki though, usually to check if something really is the way it is... Point Lookout for example, I thought I had missed a section of the map or something but wikki showed I had pretty much been everywhere and seen what there was to see, it's just a small place with not much content. Still not quite believing it I got the explorer perk to make sure there weren't more locations to check out.....

If I'm allowed to make a cryptic suggestion as well :)

Keep an eye out for cows in space, its not safe up there!

haha,
yeah throwing money away is fun!..
the wiki has a LOT more information and is updated a hundred time daily.
also its easier to find the stuff youre looking for, especially if you have a laptop.

How does having a laptop make the Wikia easier ?

Probably so you can take it with you. The book's portable too, and much less likely to be stolen...

In another smaller raider nest in a suburb, you can get a unique combat knife. Funny thing is, it's not completely unique - I've gotten the same weapon more than once in the same location. Must be a minor glitch.

-Southeast of Little Laplight there is a military base.
There you can go in a bunker of the Talon Company.
The leader has a special knife.

-A Special Fatman (MIRV) can be found in the camp of the National Guard.
But one has to diligently collect tapes. It must be six.

The best gun in the game in my book is A3-21's Plasma Rifle, when you do the quest in Rivet City. Their is old man name, "Dr. Zimmer." thats needs your help. He needs you help him to find his android, and another person wants you to keep this android secret where his location. Well the person they looking for is Harkness, just talk and help him who he is he will reward you this Best weapon. ;)

The Victory Rifle is located in a shack west of Rockbreakers Last Gas.

edit - I found it today all by myself. Didn't have to use the Wiki at all. It's the only unique weapon I found by just exploring the Wastelands, so I thought that was pretty cool.

One weapon I have fallen in love with is metal blaster from the pit. Laser shotgun who share a important property with the terrible shotgun and other unique shotguns. Critical hit damage is calculated for all the bullet/ beams then you do sneak attack outside of VAT. 9*critical hit damage*1.5 for better criticals*2 for sneak, yes that is right a sneak attack does over 800 in damage. Headshot kills reavers and overlords. Yes the terrible shotgun does more damage, 1200 in sneak attack outside VAT yes a headshot does far more damage than a fatman, downside is the huge spread so you has to get real close, metal blaster works well on 20-25 meter range with high energy weapons skill. Downside, this effect does not work in VAT, spread is also terrible in VAT so switch to another weapon if you use vat against enemies at medium range.
For VAT use I prefer novasurge, very high damage, low action point use, decent accuracy.

Coolest weapon is vengeance, more fun with the point lookout perks who give you +10 damage/ bullet, two nice features with it, if you use it on something like a reaver or overlord they get crippled at once, this makes them do an in pain animation, because the gun kills them is seconds they seldom finish it, The other feature is that it you sweep the beam over lesser enemies like encalve or supermutants they dies at once.
