Ratslayer best Rifle ?

Post » Wed Jun 02, 2010 9:45 am

This is various rifle statstics

whilst the ratslayer does not have the best statistics in the hands of a stelthy sniper it is the most effictive weapon in the game

also obtaining the ratslayer is easy and the gan is very cheap to repair and uses the most aboundant ammo in the game i think and also has low attack and gun REQ also the night vision scope and silencer make it the ultimate stelth weapon

for these reasons i think its one of the best weapons in fallout new vegas

I rated it a 7, because of the silencer, night vision and ok dam +ap usage.

I only use it if Im trying to quiet snipe. Most of my sniping is done with a scoped hunting rifle or sniper rifle. I really never use silencers in fo.

Best overall rifle in the game, IMO

It svcks AP, but I don't really use it in VATS.
Dmg is a bit low, but every hit is a sneak attack crit (with better criticals perk)
Super cheap and easy to repair, even without Jury Rig
Super common ammo. I just wish there was a handload round for it.
The silencer let's you pull Cazadors 1 by 1.
The range let's you plink Deathclaws down from safety.

Ratslayer and I fully dismantled Cottonwood Cove from a nice safe vantage point, just below Sniper Nest. Not a single bullet was returned my way as I dropped every single one of them with single shot each. Except Phoenix. Took two shots to down him, but it was amusing to see him run around like a headless chicken for those few seconds between shots.

All that, combined with how early and easily you can aquire the weapon: my favorite rifle overall, 100%. I always carry a second weapon to fill in the deficiencies of Ratslayer. For example, a brush gun, shotgun or submachine gun to use during prolonged firefights at close to medium range. Those are few and far between though.

It's the best bangs-per-buck gun in the game along with the YCS/185, you can get it early on (level 6 or something on my first playthrough)(I wandered about aimlessly a lot), plenty of ammo and it remains an effective option right the way through.

Easily my most-used gun, it remains useful from the moment you get it 'till the end of the game. Plus the nightvision scope is just cool, even if it's a bit glitchy at times.

yeah but you can get a silencer mod for the sniper and carbon fiber parts so its lighter more durable and silent... altho the night vision tis a good thing about it all though i can snipe better with my trail carbine.... hmmmmm

Very Solid wep that will last the whole though towards the end

I think its great for stealth for weaker or unarmoured opponents to conserve ammo for lets say a silenced sniper for stronger enemies

Only thing I dislike is the glitchy nighscope that at times goes on during the day

I'd give it an 8 because it's easy to get, ammo is very available and it's silenced. The only downsides, not as much strength as an Anti-Material Rifle, rate of fire is also slow.

I prefer a silenced varmint rifle because it's more satisfying using iron sights.

Easy to get?! At what level?

I've tried going into the cave prior to level 10. You know what happened? I got my [censored] ass kicked all over the [censored] place by those [string of expletives] rats.

I got this rifle by the time I got the Brush Gun.....it was, of course, waaaaaaaay worse than the Brush Gun and the silencer and scope was really annoying. I don't like rifle with scopes that aren't powerful. The Varmint Rifle/ Ratslayer is just a low tier gun that does not match up to the power of many other higher tier guns than it. I can easily equip Silencer and Carbon Parts to the Sniper Rifle and it would be way more powerful. Plus, I didn't get this weapon on my Critical Hit Specialist Character, so this weapon is just a bag of dirt to me.
The weapon is called Ratslayer, not Deathclaw Slayer, which is the Brush Gun...maybe not the post patch Brush Gun, but yeah, the pre patch one.

I agree 100%. Ratslayer is meant as a low-tier weapon, and it's only because it's good FOR A LOW-TIER WEAPON that I give it a 5/10.

5/10 for sure, Nightscope isn't important at all and there are a ton of guns that fill the sniping role better. Great for weaker enemies like fiends outside Vault 3.

With a Sneak Attack and better criticals the Abilene Kid LE BB Gun does ~double the damage of the ratslayer, is a silent weapon, uses cheap BBs, has a strength req of 1, lower AP cost, larger clip size, more attacks per second. Plus there is no fight for this gun.

It lacks a scope and reliable damage outside of sneaking but a very underrated gun.

I just got it at L6 but I had the ED-E and ignored the lower level.

I never use it or the varmint rifle in general. Just looks very flimsy and generally lame to me.

99.9% of the game is populated by enemies that can be killed with one shot from the RatSlayer. It's weight, free ammo, repair-ability and cheap sneak crits make it the most useful gun in the game by far. It's not something to use head on against DC's - that would be suicidal.

The AMR with incendiaries against DC's is my preferred DC pest control.

It is a half decent weapon for lower tier characers, I'd say less than 15. But a silenced sniper rifle is better, and for big damage, I prefer the AMR. I like a stealthy character, so I abuse silencers like a ninja, I just wish the 12.7mm Pistol was considered a holdout weapon. Would have been easier to cap benny with just one bullet in his own home.

I gave it an 8/10.

When I was out exploring, I found the rifle laying on a desk in the Broc Flower Cave. I thought it was the coolest gun I've seen in the game. The repair options were cheap, the ammunition for it is fairly easy to obtain, it makes good damage against various targets, the appearance is awesome, it has a x2 Night-vision scopes, and the Guns and Strength requirements are very affordable! The only bad thing with the gun is that It only shined at medium to high-ranged combat rather than suppressing fire and close-ranged combat. Still, It's all-round a great rifle and a fair replacement for those sniper rifles.

I'm really thinking about going back to the cave since I reloaded a new game to boot up hardcoe Mode.

@Magneto-Laser Pistol
What I did instead on my last save was to kill them at where they were originally at with Cass and Rex at my side. I was using the Q-35 Matter Modulator or whatever you call it to kill them as I don't have any strong conventional guns. The aftermath was a dent in my health-replenish supplies. But during the bloodbath, Cass never got unconscious, but Rex went unconscious twice (probably he approached directly the most).
