Reacting to a post-apocalyptic world (no spoilers)

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 5:17 pm

So, you've left the vault 200 years after the apocalypse as sole survivor of vault 111.

How faithful will you be to any emotional state you may be in, or your total lack of awareness of the wasteland and its ways?

Things I plan to do include:

  • If finding myself the sole survivor was a difficult experience, I may mope around my house a time
  • Ignoring any of those bottle caps lying around, I don't want trash.
  • Pick up pre-war money, I may need to buy something.
  • What the [censored] are those giant bugs and rats !!
  • I'm not touching any of those radroach corpses, ugh

In short, I'm one naive wasteland wanderer,

until hard experience comes knocking...

That's a good point. I wonder how we'll find out that caps are money?

First vender who seems uninterested in paper money and want these bottle things.

Shame I haven't been collecting any...

First we are scared and confused. Then merely curious and later on it feels like we have been in wasteland all our live.

111: *sees radroach* "thats one ugly dog".

111 : * sees ghouls* " hey i dated those before graduation"

111: * reads local gazette* " mrs (censored) face visits Emporium of curious toys and robots again. Oh come on, can't girl enjoy some fun with robots no more huh?"

Been factoring that into my role play options. My first character will come from a family of doomsday preppers, so the idea of post apocalyptic reality has already been internalized.

I hope they handle the "new to the wastes" thing better then 3 did. For the most part there were no dialog options to ask things like "what are those big green things?!" it was like the LW had always been in the wasteland. I think Gob talking about ghouls is all we got really.

Personally I'd question the guy who wanted to buy all my 101 security armour with caps if I was the LW. I'd be certain he was trying to cheat me.

First thing I'd do... horde everything! Sorry, but I like to pick up everything I come across! Never know when you need something.

Plus, everything has value, you just have to find someone who values it;)

My main concern after coming out the vault will be survival. So I'll most likely try to set up some sort of base of operations. Whether that means building my own or just using my old house will depend on what's actually available for me to store things in.. So it'll either be the garage, my old house or I'll build a tiny junk house. I'll explore the immediate surrounding area collecting all sorts of crap I think will come in handy for survival and bring it back to my base. Food will main goal (even if it is just for pretend..) I don't plan on following any quest markers.. If I can turn those off I will. If I stumble upon a mission that's fine, but I won't beeline for anything.

Well, in my mind the SPECIAL videos were ones that Vault-Tec made to warn dwellers of what they may run into in the wasteland. They might not know what things are called but they might expect some radioactive monsters.

Also, the way the male player character spoke about 'knowing war' in the trailer made me wonder if he might be somewhat prepared (not sure if whichever character we pick will have the same backstory or not).

I feel like I would also establish a home base but I would have to explore to figure out what happened since the war. We might also be searching for answers as to what happened to outselves and our family like in FO3.

I imagine I'd be in straight denial until I saw my house completely obliterated. My first thought would be my family and frantically begin hunting for any obvious clues.

Next would come defense. I need a weapon...anything... baseball bat is good enough until I can find better. Where the F is my AR15?!?!! *Sigh* Looters.

I need to get somewhere safe so I can sort this out and begin finding out wtf happened to my loved ones and how the earth went to hell. Somewhere with a good vantage point and not easily accessible.

I'm so tired. My adrenaline is wearing off.

So many questions. Am I the last man alive? Are there any survivors? What will I do when and IF I meet someone? The way I see it, it's now either their life or mine. I'm not the murdering type, but that was before the war. Heh, war...war never changes...

"You maniacs...You blew it all up". Then I will promptly make my way to what was once my home, if any alcohol is found it will be consumed; cannot think of anything better than exploring the wasteland looking for signs of my family with a nice lil buzz.

I play it like always. Like a real life person that got absorbed by a virtual world I already have experience with.

So basically I will start to loot and interact with everything in my vicinity, and watch out for dangers. Given how I visualize the world around me, as it looks very hostile and destroyed, I'd also expect any social structures to be destroyed, ergo I realize the absence of law and order. This is why I...

1. get a weapon

2. get food&water

3. find a shelter

4. try finding other humans or friendly actors

My protagonist will be taking a leaf from The Martian's Mark Watney.

  1. [censored] !!!
  2. Feeling sorry for themselves for a time.
  3. Decides not to die and resolves to 'Science the [censored]' out of the situation.

Specifically, I'll be playing as female protagonist,

so (I'm assuming) I'm not an army veteran but a lawyer (as may be speculated from the E3 demo)
and will run with a matching build.

good point! I can imagine turning that stuff off will be an option. From what I've heard, apart from the iiwer armour, you don't really need to progress the story line to unlock features/technologies/parts of the map. So being a bit of a hermit vase builder is a viable option!

I think the first thing my character would do is go straight home, reunite with Cogsworth and feel sorry for him/herself for a time. Then clean up the house as best he/she can before consolidating what he/she needs to do. Then he/she will most likely recruit Cogsworth and go search.

Reuniting with Cogsworth sounds heart-warming,

but you might need a mod for that B)

True, and there was the data from the previous expedition that the vault had made to Megaton.

I like the whole feeling sorry for yourself aspect. Just moping around your house, looking at your memories, crying at the crib. Wandering around the neighborhood, kicking cans and not knowing what to do. Maybe smashing some stuff up out of anger. Sounds like a good role play experience.

Exactly. First play through is very special to me.

It's the '200 hour movie I direct' (and actually voiced protagonist will really help that personally).

I've banged on about this before,

but 'Nora' will be reacting to the circumstances of becoming 'sole survivor',

so no meta-gaming,

no bottle cap collecting (until I 'realise' I need them)

no fretting about bobbleheads

just a raw reaction to no longer being the wife of a war veteran in a cozy home with a new baby.

So I'll be channelling reluctant heroines such as Katniss Everdeen, Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor in that journey.

And I'm going to take it slow.

There will be no 'Rocky montage'...

2nd playthrough i can worry about collecting and meta-gaming B)

First I would return to the Vault.
I would then fortify the Vault into a livable and defensible home.
I would collect Pre-War Money until I found civilized people and then question them on basic economics.
I would collect all weapons and ammo, even kitchen knives, because God knows what I might need.
I would then try to secure food and develop some agriculture.

Granted Metagaming will be about impossible. Of course we know you need caps and can eat bug guts, but you know our character shouldn't know that. Not sure yet how I'm going to role-play this. Maybe something we read in the vault before we leave will update us on what's useful and not.

My first playthrough is usually the longest. I want to do every single thing I can in that first playthrough. I probably spend lots of in game time just standing around while I think of what to do and how to accomplish something.(or stand around being confused by something.) My subsequent playthroughs are just me doing things in a better order than I did them before.. so my play times just get faster and faster.
