Reaction time or player skill?

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 12:37 pm

Too many shooters have their combat surrounded by the reaction time of a player rather than skill (pretty much any Call of Duty game). So my question to those of you who have more information on this subject, will Brink's combat be about a player skill or whoever has a quicker reaction time?

Well, just in case it wasn't completely obvious enough, Brink is about skill.

Wouldn't reaction time be a skill?

I would still say overall skill is more important the reactions but it varies depending on how you play.

i want to be a part of this discussion but i have no idea what is SKILL that doesnt envolve a quick reaction time. COD requires a lot of skill - u need to react quickly to shoot the enemy before he shoots you. that's skill. if brink requires skill than wouldnt that mean u need to react quickly to shoot your enemy??
what kind of skill u think is not used in COD that should be a part of Brink?

if u could explain better that u mean there, jack, than maybe we can discuss this more.

COD requires a lot of skill.....

COD takes no skill whatsoever. It's a terrible game with a terrible community. You die after getting hit by 2 AR bullets, it's like camper heaven. I have never seen so many campers as i've seen on MW2. And i've played James Bond: QoS (a lot), and there are a lot of campers. Whenever i play COD, i get in the top 3 on the leaderboard, but that doesn't mean i enjoy it. All people care about on COD is camping, nukes, and quickscoping. And since COD brought in the nuke, we now have nuke boosters, some of the biggest [censored] in the entire gaming community.

Well obviously, quick reflexes are going to be useful in any shooter game, but in team-oriented games like this, the team with the most strategic and adaptive thinkers should come out on top.

I don't think you need to worry about this game turning into a frag-fest [censored] like the Call of Duty series. Brink has been designed from the ground up as a totally different kind of game.

I know ALOT of 8 year olds that play Modern Warfare.
Anyway, in MW2 it's who is the most teambased player comes out on top. Only in Domination and Demolition though...

define skill...

your being really vague here, is being able to accurately point at some one in a short time skill? After all any shooter, and just about any real time game, rewards reaction speed. Using tactics is skill right? but then what is tactics? would hiding in a corner and stabbing every one who walks past tactics? what is 'skill'? this is why 'skill' is one of the worst words which get thrown around in gaming communities. Every one thinks what they are doing is 'skills', and any other tactics require no skills at all.

Also note 'combat' in the OP, of course reaction speed wins combat, if both see each other at the same time, whoever can aim at their opponent first would obviously have an advantage. If it was over all game play, tactics and teamwork would have be the winner but in one on one combat, reaction speed would give you an undeniable advantage, thats how any shooter works.

also please refrain from flaming MW2, personally never played it so I can't say anything but, why does every thread eventually end in a contest to see who can bad mouth MW2 the most?

sorry if I came across as aggressive, I get overexcited when arguing points.

It's fine, we understand where your coming from. Lets just say, if you played Modern Warfare 2 you'd end up very frustrated by the time you turn of your ps3/xbox/pc. It's a great game, graphics wise, idea wise...it's just great. It's just a few little things like overpowered weapons, way too much camping etc etc. But you can get around that. By being a complete noob! I call it counter-noobing. That's where you pull out an rpg or nube tube and blast everyone for fun :D

i gotta admit that i never grown to hate MW2. played it quit a while and never saw it as a campers heaven , unbalanced or anything like that. yeah there are exploits but it never ruined MY fun with it. granted i enjoy BC2 a hell of a lot more and played it more in spite of it's lack of maps. the reason i abandoned MW2 was it's nature - it's high speed cartoonish nature. it isnt bad but it's just not my cup of tea. the extreme movement speed, the new akimbo ability and the extremely fast nature of the game is something i dont like. i like more slow paced, more cautious gameplay where its more about hiding, taking cover, moving slowly and being a part of the team. not into bunny hopping dolphin diving and dodging lead.

i dont know exactly what kind of game Brink will be and by looking at vids i dont get the feeling that guns have good feeling to them (no recoil. no kick. no tracers or indication the weapon shot anything. no sense of power) but i cant really judge since i havent played it myself. somehow, in spite of its cartoonish style it actually looks like it's more slow paced than MW2. somehow the medium and heavy seem to move slower than in MW2 and it WILL be more teamwork oriented so im optimistic. plus it will have AI. i love playing with AIs by myself or with a friend. that's a plus for me. but now COD will have bots as well though i assume Brink's AI will be better.

also i dont own a console so halo is no option.

i just think that brink is more innovative than COD or halo so it WILL draw attention, but Halo's forge mode is definitely a HUGE plus since it makes the game have a lot more content. if the mechanics in a game are good, a way for more content is all i need. this is why i love GTAIV, flashpoint 2, ARMA2 and such - they have good mechanics and with mods and other user created content they are timeless for me. this is what reach is doing good. im sure Brink will have some DLC but an occasional extra weapon or so is not a lot IMO compared to what Forge will bring to the halo players.
and if u ask ME about black-ops - it's just same old same old COD and since i've grown tired of it and it's style of MP than im not excited at all. and as fat as trayarch cares - they release their game about 5 months earlier so it's not a real competition anyways....

I thinks Brink gonna be a " i see you first, i kill you" as COD, and not a skill game like Wolfenstein Enemy territory, in which we need a lot of training to be a good player (Accuracy, Dodge, Trickjump...) (There no more game like this :( )

What I want to know who said that you had to be good to play a game I mean you can svck and play it ( I see that lot ), I mean having to reasonable reaction time in a shooter, I mean it one or the main parts, but what you do when you react and how you set your self before hand to react are two skills on there own. and them after that you have team skills and objectives, anti camp, camping ,sniping, distance, broad/map memory. I mean all shooter you must have some type of skill (just some take less than others) I mean reaction time is a main part of shooters( unless you have VATS even then you have to be looking the right direction)

MW2 is fun if you rush, is it a good game, no period, but is it fun, sometimes.
Back on topic: Brink will be a mix of the two if you see someone first you will probably kill them but if you sight each other at the same time it wont be a spray and pray luck fest, the better player will win 80% of the time in 1v1 encounters, from their on up whoever has the best teamwork wins.

You get better reaction time the more skill you have.

The dev's have said them self that no weapons will be OHK so it wont be like COD. It will be far from COD.

MW2 hitboxes are the size of a barn and take little to no skill at all to kill people especialy with how over powered the shotguns are. Like it or not, aiming at people and shooting them before they shoot you is a skill, and an importnat one to have..how are you going to carry out ur tactics if u are constantly getting pwned? I may not be the strategy guy but they will depend on my "quick reaction" time to save their asses, and that how I will help my TEAM win.

Brink will most likely even faster then Mw2 cause of SMART and the lights but maby it wont but it would be but thats my best guess.

I doubt SMART will make BRINK a faster game than MW2. In fact, using SMART does slow you down a little, because you're stuck in an anmiation then.

The thing about SMART as well is, though, that it will require more skill than any Call of Duty or Battlefield require. Trying to grabr an edge and shooting at someone, sliding across the ground and shooting at someone, that will take more skill than most shooters require these days. I think GRAW2 was one of the latest, which allowed you to actually do similar stuff.

Actually, you're never stuck in an animation. You can let go of the SMART button at any time and you'll just stop whatever it was you were doing. Well, unless you're in mid jump or something. The devs have made it abundantly clear that they don't want the SMART system to play the game for you. And of course, you can still shoot while doing most things, such as jumping, vaulting, sliding, etc.

I guess it all depends on what you consider skill. But to answer your question it wont be based of reaction time as much as your ability to adapt to the situation because there are no headshots so twich reaction shooting wont be a be all answer skill in Brink. It will come down to your gun, bodytype, the way you use the enviroment, the way you use the class you are ect.

In a game of lag, skill matters not. CoD comes down to who has a better connection. I've waited for a guy that i knew was going to come around a corner, once i saw him i immediately fired, then all the sudden i'm dead. On the killcam you see me staring at him like a dumb fool and dont even manage to get a shot off. Theres no such thing as reaction time if youre always 2 seconds behind someone.
