real estate

just posting cuz i haven't seen it posted before. how do you think real estate should be handled this time around?
i personally hope its more dynamic so we can by houses of people that died.
maybe something similar to fable but not to the extent to where it would require generic NPCs?

I thought about this, but when I considered how much money I was able to amass as my level grew while playing Oblivion, I didn't see a huge need for it. Considering the way Oblivion merchants don't run out of money like they did in Morrowind, it's a little too easy to make cash, and I feel like owning real estate and making rent off it would only add to the excess money problem. I don't know about anyone else, but when I play a game like this I feel like I should struggle to make ends meet. Most other people in Tamriel probably aren't around rolling around in big piles of gold like our characters can, and it makes me feel out of place.

The houses of people you kill will probably be re-bought by a relative or something.

i totally agree with you. i seriously don't think you should be able to exploit something like real estate. like when i went to the waterfront in oblivion, the fact that i am no different than any other NPC made me feel like everyone in the waterfront was a [censored] because of how easy it was to earn money. i think money should be a challenge this time around, but i want real estate for a role playing tool. like a place to eat, work, cook, and blacksmith and things like that. i think we should be able to own a farm too. but i just think it would add to the role playing side of things if we weren't confined to just buying one house in each town, and only though the permission of the count. haha i went further to my opinions on real estate on this response than my original post

I kind of have to side with this. I mean, when npc complained about high taxes and how they only made 5 gold a year, I loled because you could make 1000x that after killing a bandit. Now, with the hope the leveling system is fixed in some way or another, that wouldn't be a problem.

As for buying houses of the dead...I just dont know. "Dragonborn realty" is a tad strange in itself to me. Why would the dragonborn be renting this house to us? Shouldn't he...be saving us or something?

What I would like to see however is more option with the proporty you can by. By a plot of land in town, choose from a few different models of homes, and then watch it being built. None of this instant mumbo jumbo poof there it is with magic stuff. I'd like to see my hous being built, and be able to talk to the workers and see how they're doing. The inside should also be very customizable. Racks that you could click on, and then place parts of armor into it, and the armor be visable. A mantle above my fireplace to hang my sword. The ablility to get some heads of dragon's I've killed. Different sizes and colors of beds. You could get a training area downstairs, a crafting area in the back. Just so my house is mine.

it seems money is a hard concept to control in games
you start out with not enough
then when you get enough it quickly escalates to you might as well own the planet.

I am not into real estate as a status, owning a bunch of homes and stuff, who cares?

But, I would like some choices other than one buyable house per city.
An abode should reflect the type of character I am playing.
Maybe be able to get a cabin in the woods.
...or be able to pay someone to build me a home, selecting from some designs, and choose a desired location.

eventually we will have modded homes, so at least there is that.

I think this is a good idea. Sort of like, uh, what was it, Ravenrock? in one of the Morrowind expansions. I enjoyed watching the town be built, and helping it get to that point, and if we could somehow individualize the process of property ownership I think that would be a solid improvement.

@ vincent_ranulf: Yeah, I suppose it probably is difficult for game makers to balance this. I think something that would help is going back to how it was in Morrowind - I still had a lot of money, but it was definitely harder to make when the merchant I went to ran out of money after selling them a few potions.

There was a mod for what was Fallout 3 I believe that allowed you to buy houses and then get profit off it while paying taxes or something. I could see it possible but with a little scaling-down so it makes sense. An ability I'd like to see featured is that once I completely wipe out a town I should be able to more with it than just enter it. Like if you don't pay attention to it any longer near by people take it over. Like let's have Fallout 3 for example. If we kill everyone in Megaton nearby Raiders take it over if you never visit it in a long time.

And with dragons taking out parts of towns and all, I could see the construction business to be booming. Maybe by to plots of land next to each other, and then get the option for a bigger house? I'd also like to be able to live outside of towns. Maybe not a stone house, but get a log cabbin instead? Different area's would have different housing models you chould choose from. Insides too. The area you are having your home built should play into the things you are able to buy. A chest made in Bruma doesn't have to look like one from Choral. I don't think item's were made in mass production yet, so from place to place at least they should be different.

Or invest in the building company. Or even further, work for them. We can cut wood now, right? Let's get in on that meaty industry action. The people still alive need homes!

Or you could take over a town and then lead it yourself? Those raiders better listen to me, cause I'm letten em live in my town! Maybe not, but I like your idea. The world should figure something's up, and then react to it. Animals may start running around town if no human's show.
