Real-time Carriage Travelling

Post » Thu Oct 21, 2010 8:41 am

So i'm pretty sure the carriage system has been confirmed. Would any of you like to have an option of sitting through travelling in a boat etc? I believe it makes the game more immersive IMO. We may also have an option to skip through it too. This makes more opportunities for 'random encounters' eg. bandit attack if we use the land carriage system? Or perhaps we'll experience the wrath of a kraken (LOL) if we travel by sea? Or pirates, what about them? That would be cool. Haha. Thoughts?

Yes, if a real time option isn't present it'll be a fail to me.

I wouldn't mind having that. It worked well in RDR.

I'd take on either.

I rarely use fast travel, even if it is an in game one. When do use it, I want it to be fast. Sitting through the entire ride might be novel and nice the first few times, but after that, it'd get boring.

And personally, I think a random attack should be way more possible for people using the other version of fast travel than with a carriage system. They're "supposedly" traveling across the wilderness on foot.

@Deity Matrix The squid-like sea kraken with big squishy tentacles and one eye. Haha :D @Mitheledh Yeah that would make more sense. Didnt really like the fast travel in oblivion just because of that. But if these random encounters were in, they'd better not be too frequent cos it'll get annoying. Cheers!

I really doubt it's real-time. Probably just something they threw in to please the Morrowind fanatics.

why would you need to travel by sea in skyrim?
1.dangerous frozen shoreline
2. the only sea is at the top of the map

I would think the best possible way to do it would be real-time with a simple option to skip it. I'd agree with Mitheledh - it might be sort of entertaining to sit through a trip a few times, but after a while it would undoubtedly get dull, so I'd probably end up skipping it. So long as that's an option, that'd be fine.

I'd also agree that, if anything, map fast travel should be more likely to be interrupted by an encounter. Part of the point of traveling by carriage when that was an option was that you were (at least relatively) safe inside and it was somebody else's responsibility to deal with potential bandits, etc., while a character traveling alone on foot or on horseback is... well... going to be alone, and isn't going to have any choice but to deal with things on his own.

'course, we don't know yet if travel will be interrupted for encounters at all, much less under what circumstances.

Todds already stated he's an RDR fan.

If this has been the main influencing factor to include carriage transportation, then I'd imagine the 'scenic' aspect of it has also been incorporated.

I think it might be real time. Carriages that are static and don't go anywhere would be a bit half-assed. You figure if they are going to model people carrier ones why not use them for more, like traveling merchant caravans. It seems like a waste if its just a fast travel alternative. I wont even use the damn things myself if that happens to be the case.

Not doubting or anything, but can you link to where he said that?

Other than that, I'd really like a scenic aspect... Always wanted it in a RPG game, and now there's the possibilty of having it!

Id love to see a real time carriage system, sounds great. I remember always thinking in morrowind when id take a silt strider i wished they wouldve at least given me a clip for a few seconds of possibly a view of inside the strider maybe bobbing up and down

Animating a four wheeled vehicle to travel over uneven terrain and look good doing it is no small task.

I preffer the way Rockstar dealt with it in GTAIV. When you get a taxi you can sit in the back and enjoy the ride, or force the game to skip straight to your destination.

Its all about choice.

It worked in RDR, but just like in that game it should be skippable.

I think it's static.

In Oblivion, people walked from city to city all the time. If you saw them, they got killed by a bear.

The wagon would get stuck everywhere.

I hope it is in real time. If they were like Silt Striders just standing there and loading a screen, then where would be the progress from Morrowind?

What he said.

The "progress" would be from Oblivion - having them back at all, instead of just using map-FT.

That's right if we compare to Red Dead, but if we compare to Oblivion, it's still something. Some specific aspects went down in Oblivion so going back to how Morrowind handled them in 2002 would actually be an improvement.
