Realistic or [censored] Annoying?

Post » Wed May 26, 2010 12:55 am

Hey, I'm new ^_^

Anyway, I've been reading a lot of topics regarding Skyrim and I realise that this forum is obviously a subset of the player community (e.g. you are already pretty 'hard-core' if you are reading a forum), but I am curious to see something.

There have been a few topics regarding issues like freezing water, dark nights, food, fatigue, fast-travel etc which have been floating around and it's difficult to get a good grasp of 'general opinion'. To expand the answers to the question:

1) This includes things like: a haven't slept & haven't eaten meter to encourage non-24/7 dungeon crawling, no fast travel (but alternate travel methods like mages guild/caravans etc), really dark nights to discourage (but not exempt) night-time escapades, more hidden leveling mechanics and a bunch of other things which might make some players happy but seriously annoy others.

2) A foot in both camps. There are one or more personal wants which are immersive (but potentially frustrating) which you want included.

3) You prefer games which are simple and uncomplicated: Fast travel is awesome, I don't want to worry about the time of day or when I last ate etc etc

4) Compulsory joke option

I think there should be a little bit of realism, but people like to play videogames for enjoyment and escapism , I think there should be a hardcoe mode and that is the extent of realism, darker nights I would like

I want everything in 1 except for "really dark nights". I wanna be able to enjoy nights and be able to see. Don't get me wrong, nights should be DARK, much darker than they were in Oblivion. But you should still be able to see without a torch.
That is my opinion about "hardcoe nights" lol... that sounded like something else.

Edit: I think making a hard-core addon (and even all the sub addons within the hard-core addon itself) should be enitrely optional. Then, one can choose exactly which hard-core aspect he or she wants. Making basically everyone happy :D

I like the hardcoe mode implemented in New Vegas. It would be nice to have similar options in Skyrim. I know TES is not necessarily about survival like Fallout is, but I think it would be nice to have more use for food, sleeping etc

And I dont know about you guys, but on my tv Oblivion is dark as hell itself at night. I hope Bethesda gives us a brightness test before the game starts... especially if its gonna be darker

I like Immersion, but stuff like "you must sleep, eat and drink" has no place in actual gameplay and should be left for RP

I would like them to make all those kind of things modular. Those of us who want a role playing game can have it and those of us who want an action game can have it. Everyone's happy.

Yeah, there are some things that should be in the default game like really dark nights so that you actually have to use a torch or illusion spells, pitch black dungeons except when there are torches or magic crystals like in the Ayleid ruins and it's night time, light won't bleed through a hole in the roof of the cavern. Also some lights emanate from the towns instead of me having to alter my game files. Also bigger cities would be nice too. All of these things I listed will probably be in Skyrim, I have great faith in Bethesda since they have yet to make a game I didn't love and now they have their own state of the art game engine instead of Gamebryo...thank god.

You can enjoy the nights just fine since the sky will be easily visible and when the moon is out, it can cast light on the land just like in real life. It just isn't realistic to see everything at night as if it's just a cloud had blocked the sun.

1. Welcome! Have a http://www.uesp.net/wiki/General:Fishy_Stick

2. I think I'm decently hard core. I use fast travel, and the UESP for help pretty often, so I'm not as hard core as others. I voted for the second option because I don't eat or sleep in games, and I don't want 100% realism. I play the video game to avoid 100% realism.

It can work for games as a difficulty enhancer, if supplies are rare and the game is about survival in a harsh world. But even in NV it was just a chore of eating one of the hundred food items on you every now and then, because supplies were plenty.

I would prefer the Elder Scrolls to remain an RPG franchise - you can mod it to an action game if you wish. :)

I do agree that realism aspects such as eating, drinking, and sleeping should be left to the modders. I feel as though there are not enough people interested to divert attention to a "hardcoe" mode (ala Fallout: New Vegas) when that attention could be focused on more important aspects of the game.

Having to eat and drink isn't too bad imo but forcing me to stop and sleep every once and awhile might start to get annoying. If anything they should make an option to play with eating and drinking forced on you but not in the default game right now. But who knows, it could be really fun if it actually does get put in the game and we have to try it. Half the time I do something I think will just be a pain and it becomes second nature and you don't even notice it anymore.

I wouldn't mind a "hardcoe" mode at all that included this, heck I'd prolly play like that. But I don't think it should be active by default

Ah, you misunderstood me.

I actually want all the hardcoe stuff on, but that is not the direction Bethesda has been heading.

I figure if everything is modular they can still appeal to the Casual market that seems to be their primary focus as of late while still allowin me to enjoy things like a real travel system and a complete lack of magical compasses telling me where to go continually.

I'm in favor of a hard-core mode, to make the less hard-core people happy. I'm pretty much all for option 1.

they should have the various 'hardcoe' options in a menu when you can just check a box to activate that aspect.

The Elder Scrolls is not a survival RPG series. It never has been. A hardcoe mode really doesn't fit with the series.

If people want realism, they probably don't need to play a game where you can get hit with enough arrows to look like a pin cushion, and still live.

That's largely why I'd like such things to be modular.

I would like to get my realistic travel back and to do away with the absurd all knowing compass, but I don't see those things happening with the direction Bethesda is taking the series. Thus I would like them to be modular so I can have an RPG.

P.S.

Modular is exactly what sentaki is referring to, for anyone who doesn't know what it means.

Not entirely sure, but I think that the world of Tamriel has 2 stars (a yellow sun and a red dwarf) and a moon.
So pitch black nights are contradicting the lore, unless they're rare. ^^

Morrowind didn't have fast travel, but you could get around pretty fast once you learn about all the routes and intervention/teleportation spells.
It all depends on the design whether it's frustrating.

As for the need to rest: First, I'd like the old Daggerfall fatigue-system back anyway. Fatigue that doesn't regenerate, but lasts a lot longer.
I could live with having your stats drop slightly when you didn't eat, but only if resting at a tavern makes you eat automatically so you don't waste time with pointless shores.

Bits and pieces I guess, but if there are modular parts you can click to make it more or less hard core gravy.

By the way I think people would be surprised at how light most nights are if you get your selves far enough away from a city.

I'd like an option to choose between hardcoe mode or not, but the default should be the non-hardcoe of course. It would be fun :celebrate:
