Realistic Expectations

Post » Sun Jun 22, 2014 11:22 am

Anyone got any realistic expectations for the game? For example, I believe the new Doom game will combine the best parts of Doom 1/2 and 3, but it will also throw in some new or interesting elements to keep the game "distinctive" like Doom 1 to me was more about the pacing and flow, Doom 2 was more action-oriented, and 3 was horror-based. I also hope they repeat the idea of how RAGE tried to implement specific influences from other Id games. The fact that the Mutant leaps at you reminds me of the Fiend in Quake, the fact that the shotgun was satisfying, which reminds me of the original Doom, the implementation of the Authority Pulse Cannon reminds me of the chaingun from Wolfensetin, etc. It was really cool to see a lot of these small influences in RAGE, and it made the game feel like a definitive Id title, but I personally didn't really enjoy it too much, so Quake 2 still holds that title. So yeah, these are some examples. Share some of yours.

For me they'll go to the same route as Wolfenstein TNO: a reimagination of the lore plus a combination of old school elements and modern elements such as story and characters.

I'd be pretty surprised if they followed the Wolfenstein:TNO format, They kinda worked themselves into a corner WITH Doom 3 and Rag. This Doom has to be balls to the wall. With the tiny audio nods to Doom 1 in the teaser, it is probably a retro throwback with minimal story.

1 I think this game will have better grafics then wolfenstein but not as good as most next gen games. I expect it will look like Wolf new order with tessellation, shaders, motion blur, lots more bad guys, and the pc will have options for 90, and 120 frames persecond.

2 I don't think this game will sell well for younger gamers. Call of duty generation.

3 I also expect the 3 reboots this game has had will shorten the single player game.

4 I expect this game to be one of the most bloody FPS games in the last ten years.

5 I expect this game to have shot guns and demons!

6 I expect a huge level in a destroyed down town. Just like Doom 2.

7 3 reboots have me question what this next game will be like.

I am a lot worried that they will dumb down the game to appeal the casual audience.

There is no such thing as old school elements or modern elements.

Modern gaming are just dumb down games to appeal casual audience aka Safe money.

while early games were designed to appeal niche hardcoe audience.

Doom had always been a popular and well known title. It certainly isn't Marathon or System Shock where those games are more cult-based and is definitely targeted to a niche crowd than what Doom did. It
is totally possible to make a game that can appeal to a wider audience and to the hardcoe gamers too. There's also nothing wrong for a game to be popular too.

Yeah, I do think taking TNO's route could be an interesting idea. I also hope they can fix some of the problems of TNO and it would be nice to see some differences like it can't be TNO again with just demons and different guns.

I think video games should have either none (very light) or great story but Doom 4 will likely to have poor story that doesn't help the game at all.

People praises Rage for how the combats and guns feel good. I liked them, but I think there's a lot of room to improve. And I don't expect they will improve it much for Doom 4.

I really hope Doom 4 to have abstract level design. Very twisted, incomprehensible worlds. But I expect the game will have just typical sci-fi/hell environment. It seems like only level people liked in Doom 3 is hell level, but I thought the level looks just boring as 'hell'. So typical. Could fit for any hellish themed games.

id/Beth cannot truly satisfy Doom fans without moddability. One of the reasons I want abstract level design is that so mappers can bring up new levels without taking months trying to make it realistic. And the game should have super easy, intuitive level editor like Halo's Forge. But we would be lucky if we get a level editor at all.

I think id franchises should have their own identities, distinguish Doom franchise from Quake, Rage, Wolf, and other FPS games. And this is the problem. Rage felt like just mash-up of existing id games. They added car combat, quest and such but overall, the game lacked its own feel. And I expect Doom 4 is going to have the same problem.

no thanks I am seriously tired to see games dumbs down and throw away there identity to become sellout.

a game like doom already have big fan base I doubt casual cares about any IP besides COD if RE6/Tomb Raider/ Hitman sells shown that.

By now, I just want to see what Quakecon 2014 will show us. Don't care about the story, don't care if it will be just 'bang-bang; next level', I just want to see the DOOM game of the current decade.

What? Doom and Doom2 are the same game. The only difference are a few weapons and the maps. The style, look, and feel are identical. Doom3 is a whole other game, completely different.

It is easy to make that statement since both Doom 1 and 2 didn't really change much from the core formula, but due to the design and how the game is presented, there is some sort of difference.

What would that be? They are not identical it's true, but very nearly.

@PenGun - its true. John Romero even said that with DOOM, they were learning these new things you can do. With DOOM 2, they weren't f*cking around anymore, they went ALL the way. The levels were larger, more sophisticated, there were more monsters and this made the game a little harder. Look at the 'Master levels of DOOM 2' expansion! Holy crap, those are some tough levels to beat.

I think that....and I think that.....also I believe that....well I have no doubt that....anyway I guess that.....and you know what I mean, that I can actually think))

Aren't you all tired of all those speculaions....I highly advise you to play THIS:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/o3gi15c797ih40g/Hellbnd.zip

Hellbound.wad an incredible mega pack! Having lots of fun with it. The most great thing about this wad is that all the levels feels believable, not just some unidentified locations wich does not make any sense, but rather realistic... you can believe what you see....lots of details in levels, amasing lighting...tough fights, genius level design. From apartments to sewers..then to secret labs and to the forest and so on....step by step moving to hell. Take this wad, add proper story progression, between level cutscenes and this is what new doom should be! But for the time being you have great oportunity to satisfy your hunger for demon henocide))

Dav you've been too edgy since Wolf's release, you need to chill out

It's not like speculation isn't going on around the web.

For me, Doom 2 was a lot of more action packed and that's one of the defining element that really made Doom 2 different than the orginal Doom. The fact that it is more action-driven may not seem like it gives the game a sense of differences, but I believe it does. Look at MAP18, if you run around the courtyard, and just wake up all the enemies, you get an army of demons wanting to come out and kill you. That type of experience was nonexistent in the original Doom. The original Doom didn't seem to focus so much at throwing so many enemies on the screen just to wow you or keep things exciting when you were playing, but it really did have a nice "feel" to it. I loved the sense of feeling I get when I know the maps by heart, and when I tried to play it more aggressively, it just flows smoothly compared to Doom 2. Doom 2 seems to be more "predictable" since a lot of the levels really like to throw in engagements that are stacked up and keep you wanting more actions after a previous encounter.

The very beginning of MAP09 with the Shotgun spawn is a good example of this. The crowded nature of Doom 2 makes your killing much more personal and satisfying because let's face it, it's fun to kill hordes of demons in these type of games, but it didn't seem to have that sense of variety like the original game did. I also feel like it didn't have as much balance. In Doom 2, since the game loves throwing you a lot of monsters on the screen, weapons like SSG, Chaingun, Rocket Launcher, and BFG-9000 seemed to be the most ideal weapon set up in the entire game. You really don't need anything else while Doom was so varied in its engagements and it didn't have the SSG, it seemed to force players to rely on a variety of weapons than those four guns. Just like what FatherlyNick said, Id included city-like levels which was really did make the game feel more open than before, and also the implemntation of the SSG is also quite a game changer since it's probably the main reason why the game is more intense in the first place or why they put more enemies in groups.
