Realistic graphics or more artsy?!

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:06 am

I agree completely. Bethesda should go more stylized like they did in Shivering Isles. Thats one aspect of the Shivering Isles that I thought was a major improvement over Oblivion. With so many games doing a bland fantasy setting, its very important that we get a distinct style like Bioware is doing in DA2 but of course something original to TES to set it apart from all the other "dragon games".

I have little doubt Bethesda will come through on this with as long as they have been working on Skyrim. I'm hoping for some more stylized combat and spells as well.

PHOTOREALISM FTW!!!!!

seriously, how cool would morrowind look if it was photorealistic? the swamps for starters woul be epic on their own, let alone the interiors, the grasslands, the ruins, the ashlands, the coast, the dumner

As realistic as possible, but a little artsy touch wouldn't hurt.

Artsy from a stylistic standpoint - lots of intricate trims and tapestries, armors and weapons that look as if they couldn't possibly exist in real life. Photorealistic as far as the actual graphics go - I've always liked the dark, cold grungey feeling of Morrowind. Everything in Oblivion feels inflated to me.

photorealism helps immersion greatly. it helps dungeons feel scary, it makes enemies look more frightening,it makes characters more believable

btw- anyone hoping for a better facial animation system

I consider MW to be a mix, so I chose the mix option.

for me, realism is essential for a good rpg, i wanna be there - so photo realistic should be the goal. I loved oblivion's detail, but the slightly pastelly colouration was a constant reminder that it is just a game. GTA IV is getting old hat now, but when i saw the movie like appearance of much of it i was blown away - imagine how good a game like Skyrim could look now. I also want much more real looking fighting effects - like what you'd expect in a sword slash-em up, blood, viscera, amputation/decapitation and screams. upsetting or unsettling it may be, but you're meant to be really there (as far as is possible). rate it 21, or 30, if necesary...........

i agree with more of the statements, what i have in mind, is that when it has to be bright and beautifull it has to be all the way in any way and when is dark it must be really frightening and this doesnt have to do necessarily with photorealism

I don't mean Artsy like "Oooh, look, all of the lines are thick, everything looks like it's directly from an anime, and *gasp* look cartoon-looking explosions."

I mean artsy like having it's own unique feel and style to it's graphics while still looking detailed and realistic on the standpoint of "Hey, http://i888.photobucket.com/albums/ac87/MartutTES/ScreenieShot.png character actually looks like a person!" compared to... well... http://images.uesp.net//9/92/OB-npc-Blanche_Mastien.jpg

I am, definitely. It's not that they need a different one, it's just that they need to improve it so smiling doesn't make your face deform.

I want the graphics themselves to be realistic, but I want the environments to be creative and interesting and not generic like Oblivion's.

Bethesda's artists aren't good enough for realistic to work without having the uncanny valley effect. Most studios can't pull it off, if any. I voted artsy

I think they do have the ability to pull it off. When I think back to Oblivion's release and how state-of-the-art that games graphics were then, I'm damn sure that Bethesda could pull it off again. When Oblivion was released it was the best looking game I had ever seen.

You guys do realize artsy isn't simply confined to something that looks heavily illustrated right? Cell shaded games are not the only artsy types of games either.

None of you thought Shivering Isles was artsy? What about Halo Reach? That was pretty artsy? Brink is too.

I think the word that should be substituted is heavily stylized.

Yes, but in this case, artsy is used in comparison to 'realistic'. I mean I want it to look as 'cool' and 'imaginative' as possible, but I also want it to look 'real'.

I chose option 2 because I feel it gives the game a timeless feel. Allows for playthroughs years from release without the game looking outdated,

I still find Oblivion a very easy game to go back through and play (and enjoy). Even if the graphics are a bit dated. And at the time those graphics were about as realistic as they came.

I think that open-ended games like TES are meant to create a sense of immersion and living in another world. Adding realistic graphics would make it closer to real-life, and would add more immersion. So yes to photo-realistic graphics. Not just for Elder Scrolls, but for every Open-ended RPG.

I want whatever they do graphically to fit the game's atmosphere and plot as well as possible. Whatever they chose to do that works with the game overall is fine by me.

I concur.

If you've seen Morrowind's concept art, then you've seen Dark Crystal.

I'm not at all concerned with Skyrim, or any other game for that matter, looking dated any time soon. Seriously, just about any game made in the past five years is going to look just fine to me in the next five. Hell, Morrowind is going to be almost 10 years old by the time most of us will be playing Skyrim, and that's still not going to look dated to me.

I'm not putting you in this category, but it really annoys me when gamers are so concerned with how good graphics are going to look on a game that's been out for a few years. Honestly, we've long since crossed the threshold where 3D games look like crap to us a few years later. Prime example: How good Oblivion still looks V.S. how good the first Resident Evil looked in the year 2001.
