I want this game to have as close to photo realistic graphics as possible. "Artsy" works great for some games. (Borderlands anyone?) But I don't think it would suit a TES game.

Realistic. I do agree that some games with the cartoonish look are pretty cool looking, but the 'wow' factor, and awesomeness in realistic graphics are just... WOW... Assuming they look good lol. For its time, Oblivion was awesome imo. Now looking back on it, then looking at newer games, its just "wow". Just my opinion :)

I m still confused about it, if they have the ability to make it look good, i dont know, atleast in some extent as fas as it concern the characters and not the inviroment

Bethesda's artists aren't good enough for realistic to work without having the uncanny valley effect. Most studios can't pull it off, if any. I voted artsy

mix in this case.

it totally depends on the renderer and how detailed the world is though. a certain level of realism is good. photo realism will probably not be possible on this scale, but more the merrier to a point. I sure don't want borderlands or wow on my screen playing tes.

I agree, maybe not in this game, but eventually I want the series to reach the level of photorealism when showing full on battle sequences, and rendering Lord of the Rings style scenery. I just want it to look pretty good in Skyrim though, for now I'm more concerned about content, but in TES VI or VII when we're on to the next next generation consoles and computers, there will be higher expectations for certain and eventually I want to see some truly epic scenery and landscapes on masses and scales previously completely unimagined, and so beautiful they couldn't even be conceived in reality. Its not beyond our graphics processing now, its just beyond the consoles, and beyond smooth rendering, or easy creation, so for now I'm content keeping modest... For now...

You guys do realize artsy isn't simply confined to something that looks heavily illustrated right? Cell shaded games are not the only artsy types of games either.

None of you thought Shivering Isles was artsy? What about Halo Reach? That was pretty artsy? Brink is too.

I think the word that should be substituted is heavily stylized.

Artsy! :D

That's what Bioware decided to do with DA2. They wanted to "hot rod" the art (according to the interview in GI) because they felt that the attempt for realism in DA1 fell short and didn't really help distinguish the game from other, similar games (TESIV, Two Worlds, etc.).

Of course, the extreme end is something like Okami or the upcoming http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P82xyHLE_Y. Absolutely gorgeous artistic piece of work in its own right.

TESIII was artsy, if you think about it. The dunmer architecture, designs, etc. were very stylistic.

EDIT: You can't fool me, there is no game that has non-pre-rendered graphics that actually look photorealistic. At best, you get a shoddy facsimile, at worst, a pathetic mockery of reality.

realistic. you cant really go long with photorealistic games. you can go wrong with art direction though. morrowind had great art direction.....oblivion had svcky art direction. oblivion was way to colorful and cartoony looking. the trees and grass were radioactive neon colors and if you didnt use a mod you had to deal with that awful tinting they put in there. this is supposed to be a game about an impending invasion and the end of the world and yet i felt like i was going to see elmer fudd or daffy duck walk out from behind a tree. morrowind was shrouded in darker more muted colors and gave a more forboding presence than oblivions "hey look at me im glowy and bright" attitude.

for skyrim i want deep dark forests with lots of shadows. i want glaciers with huge ice gaps that i cant even see the bottom of because its too dark yet if i look across the snow im blinded by the suns glare reflecting off of the snow. in other words i want it to look as close to my trip to alaska as possible.

To clarfify something, for me artsy doesnt mean cartoonish, it means more stylish or made in a way that gives an exceptional atmosphere like from a fable or something

Realistic all the way. A unrealistic style, is not suitable for a game like TES.

the "uncanny valley" suits mid-evil RPG'S perfectly

it's unrealistic in more modern games like fall-out

i absolutely love morrowind's graphics, but was to "lalala, walking through a meadow" *to steps later, in the valley of ghosts and black rock* "oh my god, i'm so scared"

I want whatever they do graphically to fit the game's atmosphere and plot as well as possible. Whatever they chose to do that works with the game overall is fine by me.

I chose option 2 because I feel it gives the game a timeless feel. Allows for playthroughs years from release without the game looking outdated,

I chose all three! Artsy but not like Borderlands or Brink. More like Uncharted or Mass Effect artsy.
