[RELz] Really AEVWD - Thread #6

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 1:17 am

Version 1.8

* Some Skingrad castle architecture pieces had incorrect ambient color settings on their material data blocks, resulting in some parts being black.

Hmm...

On another thread (the official UL thread, if memory serves) I reported seeing the "color blobs" normally associated with incorrect far-distance files while facing Skingrad from the north. I may just be lucky, but must say I've not noticed those blobs since updating to RAEVWD 1.8. (What's more, I don't think I ever saw them before initially installing an older version of RAEVWD late last month (Jul).) Could the Skingrad Castle fixes be responsible for their disappearance? Or, again, am I just lucky in not recently having been at the right spot to trigger them?

Hi,

I posted this question in it's own thread but I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on the following problem.

How can I get these textures to show up in the distance as well as close up, they just pop into view as I move closer.

You can see the difference in the textures on the bridge and the IC in the distance.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/PJ_Meridian/Oblivion/ICBridgeRyuTextures.jpg

These are the textures I'm using: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14545

Any info appreciated, thanks.

Hi Meridian. Sorry for not replying in your other thread. I downloaded those textures and have them mostly working. I assume you are using RAEVWD. Are you running Better Cities?

Edit - my take on it
Vanilla Oblivion contains 5 Imperial City LOD textures with normals in the Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa under path-
textures\architecture\imperialcity

icbridgelod01.ddsictowerlod01.ddsicwalllod01.ddsicwalllod01.ddsicwalltowerlod01.dds

These are replaced by the mod.

However, Better Cities and RAEVWD use a different texture path -

Oblivion\Data\Textures\lowres\architecture\imperialcity

Copying the five new lod textures to the second texture path seems to have fixed it. I use Bain so I repackaged the mod with a VWD option.

Hi,

How can I get these textures to show up in the distance as well as close up, they just pop into view as I move closer.

You can see the difference in the textures on the bridge and the IC in the distance.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/PJ_Meridian/Oblivion/ICBridgeRyuTextures.jpg

These are the textures I'm using: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14545

Any info appreciated, thanks.

I'm assuming you mean the distance view of the IC walls and towers? If so, then the texture pack you're using doesn't include VWD textures to fix that with. That's something you'll either need to contact the author about or do yourself.

There's a possibility that the corrections to the normal maps may have resolved the issue. I doubt it, but I haven't seen one of those colored blobs in a long time. The Skingrad castle pieces would only have been responsible for black VWD, which isn't even something I saw but with the way this game is one never knows.

Hey, no problem. Yes I am using both of those, BC and RAEVWD.

I wouldn't mind doing them myself, but wouldn't know where to start. I did make an attempt but the textures looked really grainy and out of place.

Check my edit above... and let me know. I do not use the RAEVWD Imperial City plugin so not sure how that would work. Here's some (not very good) pics

Not sure what's happening at the base of the tower, but it looks ok from the ground. :whistling:

:foodndrink:

Edit - @Arthmoor Thanks for all your mods... and do my posts above make sense to you???

I'm going to install this on my computer, but since my computers a rubbish vista set-up never intended for gaming, I was only going to use the Ayleid Ruins and Forts. Do the ships use up much FPS as well though. because if they don't I'll install that to.

I just downloaded the Main one, the SI one and the one for Elsweyr Anequina in your TESNexus link! Thanks! I'll wait to see how my game turns out after installing them in their entirety!

Edit:
I had to completely uninstall my game and reinstall the game due to the files in the main part's 00 folder causing the Imperial City and a number of other distant LOD to dissapear! Then later on I found out that it was caused by Window's Vista and my PC's hardware specs! >:(
SO I don't even think this mod is truely Vista friendly at all! (at least on my PC)

Version 1.8 seems to be much more comprehensive than 1.7?
With 1.7 the only conflicts I saw was with Adash - City of Magic, both editing the meshes\dungeons\fortruins\exterior\castle\rfcastlewallsbase*** files.

With 1.8 I also see conflicts with:
Better Cities.

Better Thatched Roofs (like them better than the QTP3 versions)

Summerset Landscapes:
meshes\architecture\docks\anvil\anvilboardwalkcomplete01_far.nif
meshes\architecture\docks\anvil\anvildock01_far.nif
meshes\dungeons\ayleidruins\exterior\artowerfloor01_far.nif

Adash only edits the far_nifs so I load it before RAEVWD, but I assume Better Cities should load after?

EDIT:
I see some of the same mods also conflict with your SI edition.

Adash:
meshes\trees\dementia\dmushroomtree01_far.nif
meshes\trees\dementia\dmushroomtree02_far.nif
meshes\trees\dementia\dmushroomtree03_far.nif
meshes\trees\dementia\dmushroomtree04_far.nif
meshes\trees\dementia\dmushroomtree05_far.nif

Go with before. Several meshes and many MANY of the textures and normal maps got cleaned up for 1.8 so anyone who is using the files is using older versions. It's nothing especially critical, but you'll get less visual anomalies with 1.8.

Arthmoor, could you be convinced to release a version in which the house windows are not yellow (ie with the vanilla window textures)? While the illuminated windows look almost ok by night, (though way too bright for candlelight, it's something all the illumination mods I've seen have in common), by day they look decidedly alien, especially when reflected in water. And it's a real problem if one doesn't use a similar replacer on the full-size meshes, that way the windows "go off" when you get close. :|

Also, the description you give for the base file on Nexus, "Base package with required meshes and vanilla lowres textures for Cyrodiil." is somehwat misleading in this aspect, makes me think maybe you included these non-vanilla textures in the base file by accident...?

If you're interested, I'd be willing to help out by doing the texture replacing, since I'm already at it for a number of buildings. What do you think?

It's an oft requested thing, but believe me, there would be far more from people who use AWLS wanting to get the windows turned back on. Since the display state of a VWD mesh can't be toggled, I opted to go with the lit versions. The benefit of being able to see buildings in the distance at night far outweighs a few anomalies up close or during the daytime.

I'm not opposed to toning down the brightness, but doing so at ridiculously low levels like some of the original illuminated windows came with is out of the question. Most of those original runs were no better than having no lighting at all. Of course, I've got no clue how to go about that. Brumbek did the illumination support on the last run for those :)

I certainly won't ever go back to unlit buildings, and won't put in the time to downgrade the VWD textures to return to vanilla, I'd be willing to put an optional download up on the page for those who wish to use unlit windows instead if you're willing to supply them.

Ultimately it's a matter of taste, I think, not of what's realistic or not... very few if any of us had an opportunity to observe candle-lit windows in streets illuminated by torches. I just don't happen to like it, though I believe when you say that most people do.

I'd be willing to put an optional download up on the page for those who wish to use unlit windows instead if you're willing to supply them.

Perfect! It's exactly what I had in mind. I'll contact you when I have something for you, then. :)

I was planning in the future to get to courage to see if my computer can handle RAEVWD and I am curious if this mod works well with http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8771 that I also plan to install?

Okay I finally entered the game to see how everything works with the new additions, and WOW, the LOD is great now, and with no significant loss in FPS, except maybe in Cities, although I am not so sure yet.

Thank you for another great mod, Arthmoor! :foodndrink:

Too bad that Depth of Field doesn't work :( .

Not really needed that I've seen. I can see the cities and buildings from across the valley. Besides there is no teslodgen for Nehrim as of yet.

Not me. I have view distant set to 100 for everything and I still dont see everything from far far away. I'll post some pictures just so you can see what I see.

It'll be a moot issue trying to make this work with Nehrim without tes4lodgen being usable in an alternate folder. That's out of my hands, so don't bother asking.

How much of an FPS hit does this cause?

The download's readme gives a good account of performance considerations, as does this thread's initial post. To be brief, it depends on your system, game settings, and how much of RAEWVD you wish to install. It's modular so you can customize it to your heart's content. The city add-ons (see inside IC from miles away, etc.) are prolly the most demanding of RAEWVD's various modules, but again can be ignored if need be.

I don't run with a full RAEWVD install, but the parts of it I DO use don't cause significant performance issues. Then again my computer is fairly decent: Intel i7 930, 6gb ram, nVidia GTX 470.

I have a thread going on about http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1118225-graphical-weirdness-in-the-fringe/, but I'm posting the update here as it seems to be connected to RAEVWD SI. I'm using the 1.8 version but I still have black VWDs and colored blobs. The blobs seem to be directly connected to the black VWD, i.e. when looking straight at a black VWD section I get a blob:

http://www.bluemelon.com/photo/18688/855118.jpg

Also note the "invisible" part under/to the left of the black VWD. I have lots of those blacks VWDs and "invisible"/blurry sections - and thus a lot of colored blobs when moving around.

EDIT: The colored blobs definitely seem to be connected to RAEVWD SI, as they are gone after uninstalling it.

I still get http://www.bluemelon.com/photo/18688/856500.jpg, though (which curiously get colored when my char casts spells). Perhaps those are in the vanilla game - but I've never noticed it before this and the last play through and as it's very noticeable I suspect some other mod might be involved.

Anyway, guess I'll skip RAEVWD SI for now.
