I really don't like the "perk every other level idea&#34

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:44 am

I liked a perk every level in FO3. I felt more free to choose silly/semi-useless ones. It was just something to look forward to. FO NV took most of the fun out of odd number levels.

My take: It ain't broke, so there ain't no need to fix it.

It ain't broke, but I fixed it with a mod anyways. :D

I wish it was every 3 levels like Fallout 1 and 2.

I remember when I got up there in levels in fo3 I just started randomly picking perks because I had gotten the ones I wanted in the beginning and it became where'd I click any perk I first saw because I didn't care for any. That's a problem.

Kinda svcks not to be on a PC. With PC you can have all the perks in the world. That's probably making people vote for every 2nd level because they can decide to have all the perks or not unlike us PS3 & 360 users.

PS if it was every 3rd level; the game would;ve been horrible because the perks svck in this game & are not worth every 3rd level let alone 2nd level.. I found it super boring leveling up because there weren't any perks to look forward to(except for Jury Rigging).

So people are voting for every second level out of malice, and not because they want a more balanced experience?

I think the rate of New Vegas perk gains is a lot better than F3 but I would've rather had it at every 3 levels. Around, say, level 15 or so, I still find myself picking perks just cause I have to pick one. Whether they fit my character or not.

I'm glad that the snowglobes don't affect SPECIAL. I still don't like the idea of collectibles such as these, it's basically free money since they tend to be so easy to find. If they really had been cleverly hidden away then it would've been different.

Skill point rate is greatly improved in NV IMO though, again, I could've gone for slightly less skill points over the course of the entire game. I think they almost got it completely right. I wish they had not included the skill magazines however.

Which means I must be a real ogre, as I voted for "every 3rd level."

Not to mention the absurd assertion that people voting for less must be on PC voting maliciously then using the console to give themselves a perk per level or more- I'm on PC, happy with (and only taking) one every other level, and still wouldn't mind it if they went every 3rd level (which I'd take one every 3rd level and be done with, not laugh at the console players' misfortune while I load up on perks).

Don't hate me just 'cause my RAM's bigger. :lmao:

I voted the same (though I will not seek out a mod to do that for my game - I dislike using them in general). So much bad energy around. :P

Yep. Love the availability on mods, but don't really use'em too often. To take a whack at a deceased equine, it's not like the game doesn't have enough random CTDs on its own without piling mods into the mix.

That too. Also there something in a modded game that distracts from my experience, like "this isn't the game as it was designed to play out, and why I bought it" (not talking about bugfixer or some simple graphical update mods, but ones that alter the gameplay). Dunno why, but I've never managed to finish a modded game. They're kinda felt like the last resort to add some little extra longevity when all that the game really has to offer has gone sour.

I think the perk and skill point systems in F:NV are fine as they are, although I do find myself wanting more perks than the 15 I can take due to how I build my characters.

I am currently testing a mod I made that allows a perk per level, which will enable me to fully perk-out two combat skills and take a variety of survival-oriented stuff as well. I may well end up reverting to a perk every other level, but will have to see. While the test character will get all of that stuff at once, there's something to be said for needing to focus more narrowly on a few chosen specialties, such as EW + added survival or Guns + Stealth.

Being unable to max all skills certainly helps, since it means I have to more carefully plan a given character's progression and perk selection to fit the skills I choose to improve.

I think they got it right, imo. I only wish there was some sort of optional slider in the settings menu which would allow you to reduce the amount of XP earned by whatever percentage, so that there's an chance to slow down the leveling.

I don't mind either, but I still feel forced to take similar perks, mostly toughness and better criticals tbh, I can go without them but outside of certain specialties there is not many that actually give the same benefits imo.

Other perks are silly, JR is handy only for EW imo untill 303's and 50 cals, but then plasma rifles and RCW's aren't that common and they are the two most common EW's to use to repair other gear, and not being able to repair one suit or outfit with any other, without this 90 repair skill is really really silly.

The melee perks are great, but again unless you pick melee and h2h it's a cherry choice.

V.A.T's is useless, I rarely used it in FO3 only as a life or reload thing, but in NV wasting any perk on it, when it has no security and all the flaws of warping enemies, stand and shoot play, and hitting air / muzzle poking through npc's it's not worth it.

So keep the perks as is, just either get rid of useless ones or make better ones and have suitable requirements, require less scrap to use.

I actually like getting a perk every other level, because I always find myself with a list of perks that either wouldn't help my type of character or I just wouldn't want. Then I'm forced to take a random perk, so it seems like a waste.

As for the snow globes and skill points, I think they're fine as they are.

I know its to keep the game balanced but I really didn't enjoy the game's perks in this game. Other then Jury rigging(sp) of-course. It made the game feel a bit dull/ empty, if those are the right words.

I personally tried to keep my character balanced by having my SPECIAL equal (all at 6), and my skills around 65 or so. Should they do something about this with their add-ons or is it ok the way it is. Personally; balance is mainly for multi-player games but that's my opinion.

You character is horrible. (sorry)
The entire point is not to be balanced, but to make a specialist of sorts,
and concentrate in a few areas. Then you can can be exceptional in areas
you need to be, and good enough in a few others.

I like the every other level set up myself. Perks should have some sort of value besides getting one every level. I take a moment to scan and think even if I am 100% certain which I will take. I enjoy that more then having a ton of perks.

I'm somewhat torn with the number of skillpoints, there is a lot, but it's nice to have a buffer.

Bingo. The perk decisions are simple, most of the time. After level 15, where I put my skill points takes much more time.

I think they should have changed all of the perks that affect Action Points costs to improving melee special moves and effecting called shots for snipers. The AP perks all seem worthless to me because I never felt any need to use VATS for sniping unless I am playing a character that uses automatic weapons... in which case it does not make sense to be able to snipe with them.

A perk every 3 levels would have been fine. By the end of the game on very hard/hardcoe I had no problems obliterating opponents with any of the weapon specializations or even as a non combat oriented character. 10 charisma + using explosives to cripple all of an opponent's limbs + companion damage resistance perks + top end gear = no need to do any real fighting myself.

I'm enjoying the character development choices in NV more than those in FO3. The fact that you're forced to make decisions about what type of character you're playing makes it all feel more important and meaningful to me. FO3 (and this is just my opinion) felt more like I was choosing which order I get my power-ups in rather than making meaningful, permanent choices about my character. Granted, the change wasn't huge between the games, but for me it was a step in the right direction. Who my character is his/her strengths and weaknesses are just a little more defined.

I like what they did with the perks, too. All of the +skill perks in FO3 were boring, IMO.

1. I preferred the perk every other level system, as it made your choice of perk more meaningful. I do wish more perks were available with lower requirements, since for the first few levels you don't have a lot of options. Every three levels would be fine too, but only if the level cap was removed.

2. The bobbleheads were ridiculous, and made the game too much about tracking them down for the major boosts you got. The implants were more "in-game", made playing a high EN character a little better, and scraping together 48k caps is no walk in the park.

3. I don't really wish that skills were more easily available through books or Int, but I would prefer that the level cap went to 99. I would also prefer that they used a system more like FO2: skills could go up to 300% (and it was useful to raise them above 100), but above 100 they cost multiple skill points to raise. However, tag skills doubled each skill point you put into a skill, so your choice of tags was much more important (and the Tag! perk wasn't nearly as underpowered).

Modded my game for a perk every level. Nobody here has made a cogent argument for the 1/2 system beyond the usual "balance" discussion stopper.

In NEW VEGAS' defense, there are many perks to be acquired organically: BUG STOMPER, KILL EVERYTHING, MUTANT SMASHER, etc.

Most of the time in Fallout 3 my Perks were chosen just so I could get out of the level up screen.

I mean, there's only so many perks that are relevant to any particular character build, so being forced to choose a perk when there's nothing I'd benefit from at that time just seems unnecessary.

Once every other level is perfect for me.
