Really Extra-Weird Graphics Glitch

Post » Mon Jul 12, 2010 9:55 pm

I just spent an hour searching for this glitch, both on the web and on these forums, and I can't find anything similar. Although that may just be because the glitch is so weird and ridiculous, I honestly don't know what to search for.

Basically, here's what's going on:

I don't know how well you can tell from those pictures, but essentially the game looks like a watercolour painting or some kind of crazy acid trip. Every object and NPC is very brightly coloured and has a thick outline. It's kind of cool I guess, but it's much more graphics intensive than the game usually is and is a strain on my computer. The load times even seem to take longer. Plus it's completely unplayable in third person, where the effect is drastically magnified to an extent that I start thinking maybe my character just needs glasses.

What's strange is, it doesn't seem to affect my character in the inventory menu. He still looks normal. On top of that, when I save, the game looks normal in the thumbnails for the save. That seems to point to a hardware issue, but it's only affecting this character and only after a certain point. My other characters are fine. In fact, I have the exact time of the issue pinpointed -- I have a save from seconds before it happens. I can play normally for about five seconds after loading the save before it glitches out. I can make a YouTube video of it occurring if you like.

I think I can load an earlier save and avoid the problem (key work being think... I'm not sure what's causing it or if it will occur at that point regardless), but I'd rather not lose the progress if there's a way to fix it. Anybody know what the heck's going on?

Here's my dxdiag:

The only thing I can think of is those weather-mods you have in there. Try deactivating them and see if the game behaves correctly. In that way you can pin-point which mod is causing the problem. IF that is the case.

I can only guess that they conflict with other stuff you have in some way, causing this psychedelic look of the game. Good luck with hunting the problem out!

Looks like you have an SSAO shader running, those will reduce performance, and if you read the OBGE readme, you would know this.

You also seem to have skipped some essential reading material for Natural Environments, based on what I'm seeing in your load order. Only one Natural Weather plugin should be active at any time. I have had to explain this so many times it is getting really aggravating, please RTFM before you start dumping plugins into your data files.

Thomas, I'm not stupid. The very first thing I did after encountering the problem was go down my load order and turn off ALL weather-affecting mods. I went back into the game and discovered that not only did I still have the issue but that it was occurring in indoor cells. Then I went through and turned them back on when it was clear they weren't the problem, and clearly I clicked a few too many. I haven't played the game with all those on. I mean, it only said in the readme not to do that, like, five hundred times, AND it's in the description in the OBMM files AND on the download description on TES nexus. Plus it shows up as an error in BOSS.

As for the SSAO shader reducing performance, duh. Isn't that pretty much the single purpose of SSAO shaders? My computer is more than capable of handling it, and I fully read the readme. Are you saying that the reduction in performance could cause a problem like this, or are you just finding things to rebuke me for? I will gladly fix any issues it's causing or even turn it off if you suggest that, but your criticism thus far has been decidedly destructive.

Seriously, what's with the aggression, man? Whatever happened to, "Looks like you've got more than one Natural Environments plugin activated. Try turning some off and see if you still have the problem."? That takes a lot less effort and keeps you from looking like a jerk.
You don't have to "explain" anything and I'm not begging for attention here. If I'd bumped twice and complained that no one will help me, your answer would have been rational; it seems in this case that the asking of a question (and not directly to you or in an invasive manner) is a direct affront to your modding abilities and a waste of your time. I mean, if answering noobs' questions is this frustrating to you, maybe you should skip them over, huh? Maybe come back to them after taking a walk, or just not reply. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if you ignored the question.

That said, I'm gonna go back to an earlier save and see if the problem occurs in the same time frame as it did in the save just before the issue. Clearly this problem is not encountered often enough that the answer is well-known to forum-goers, so I'll take my leave here and try again to solve the issue independently. If I find a solution, I'll post it here.

Thanks for your suggestions, guys.

Very well, I will back off. I'm not trying to grind you into the dirt, you know, but nevertheless, I apologize for the hostility. I jumped to conclusions on this one.

Since you are using OBGE, did you try deactivating it? Everything I'm seeing in those screenshots seems like it's being caused by shaders, either too many performance-degrading shaders, or just one of them acting up. If this solves it, I'd suggest re-posting this question in the OBGE thread in the mods forum, and perhaps trying to figure out exactly which shader is causing the trouble. Running full HBAO with Bokeh DOF, for example, is a guaranteed way to bring your computer to its knees, since the engine doesn't support several of the things OBGE does.
