Really slow game after reinstalling

Post » Mon Apr 21, 2014 10:41 am

Hello everyone ! :D

Some weeks ago, i suddenly started to get error messages at the launch of skyrim preventing me to play it, and that nothing had apparently caused (i had like 30-ish mods, mainly armor ones, but no new ones were added when the problem first came up...). So, after 1) disabling the mods 2) checking the game cache with steam 3) uninstalling NMM and SKSE, which didn't solve anything, i decided to reinstall the game, using the steam backup tool.

nothing went wrong, all my mods were gone, and after that, i could lauch the game ! But here's the problem : though the FPS are good, it freezes really often : every time i start a fight, i load a game, i get in/out of a building, and start to speak with a NPC. Those last between 10secs and ca. 10 mins for loading a save (it freezes as soon as i click load, not the usual endless loading). Needless to say it makes the game unplayable...

As for my PC, it's a toshiba l670 laptop with an i 5, that started to lag really bad two weeks ago, but i don't think it's related because i can still play games like just cause 2 with no problems.

Any ideas ? Anyway, thanks for reading me , and don't hesitate to ask for more details !

When you reinstalled, did you delete the local content? Your Data Files and other things not installed by the game are left behind and that can cause issues. Stock you should only see the BSA's and the main esm's.

See this

Also, are these saves from the previous installs or new games? Old saves won't perform well if they were made with mod content that is now missing.

Do a completely uninstall of your game...

First do a standard uninstall. (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features-> Uninstall The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)

Next, delete your skyrim folder under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\

Then delete your Skyrim directory under Documents \ My Games after backing up your save files if you wish.

Then under C:\ Users \ [ Your Username ] \ AppData \ Local \ - Delete the Skyrim folder that is in it.
(You should enable to see the hidden files under windows, to delete that folder.) HOW: (View - Options - Folder Options - View - Advanced Settings: Show hidden files, folders and drives)

You don't need to uninstall Steam.

Use Ccleaner after all this (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner), and install your game again, from scratch. !!!!

----------

After that i would either start with vanilla skyrim (skyrim without mod's at all), to see how my system goes. !!!!

Don't use you old character(s) saves, start a new (game) character. !!! ***

-----------

Don't forget to install the unofficial patches (main game, and DLC's - if you have them)

http://afkmods.iguanadons.net/index.php?/files/category/95-unofficial-patch-project/

Don't forget to sort your load order with BOSS, and clean with Tes5edit.

-----------

*** If you game works fine, then you should install SKSE (if needed), NMM and your mod's of course. !!!

Install mod's that are compatible each other, read carefully the install procedure, any other recommendations from author.

Again sort your load order, and clean with Tes5edit. (if needed, and applicable).

If any mod's are not recognized, read the download page for any hint, load them at the bottom of your load order, or use BUM.(http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/311/?)

Hello CCNA and Mark, thanks for those answers !

CCNA : yes i uninstalled pretty much everything that was in the skyrim folder. And those were old saves i used,

Mark : i'll try to follow your instructions, there were still some files in the my games folder.

so i guess i'll have to start a new adventure... It's not that bad, i was considering to do so.
