Really want to get Daggerfall

Post » Thu Nov 18, 2010 5:15 pm

I've heard Daggerfall is incredibly difficult to get up and running and my computer knowledge is terrible. I couldn't even tell you my PC specs because I don't know what the hell that means. So, would I be able to get a step-by-step guide on the internet, or will I leave it? Also, my computer runs Morrowind pretty well, so I'm assuming it'll run Daggerfall too?

There's a step by step guide sticked in this forum that you could follow.

But I suggest you first try the http://www.bahnhof.se/wb462449/elderscrolls/DaggerfallBetony.7z. Just unpack it somewhere with http://www.7-zip.org/ and then double-click on the DOSBox icon.

Daggerfall does have a bit of a sharp learning curve, and just getting out of the Privateer's Hold is difficult if you don't know what to do, but it's very much worth it. Just get the ebony dagger when character creation gives you a choice of gifts. Trust me, you'll thank me for it.

I find the rumours of DF being difficult to get up and running a little bit weird. It ran fine in DOSBox the first time I tried it (around DOSBox 0.6 or so I think). I just followed the instructions someone had posted here. DOSBox has improved since then and DF runs pretty much perfectly for me. This seems to be the same for almost everyone. Unless you have a very old PC.

When I first bought DF back in early 1997, the game was completely broken. It almost constantly crashed, and on top of that were all the other gameplay bugs. With the game patched, and DOSBox, and all the installation and tweaking guides available online I think you'll be able to play it fairly easily.

But try the demo first :)

I second trying the demo first. Given the expense of acquiring a legitimate copy, it would really svck if you got a copy of Daggerfall, only to find that Dosbox runs it like a slide show on your computer.

Except those of us with processors too slow to run DosBox (IE: Any ultra-portable PC) are doomed... :(
