A reasonable house mod?

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 12:18 pm

Sorry for being ignorant, but I'm really a noob when it comes to Fallout 3 mods.

I was wondering if any one knew of a good house expansion mod for the Megaton house, that isn't filled with wierd stuff. The most popular mod, the Megaton house expansion mod(2.8.0... something rather.) has a bunch of weird, non functional furniture, like cars and stuff. Where as all the other mods have things like giant nuka-cola bottles.

I just want a good either expansion for the megaton house, or some better house, that isn't too out of place in the game; but there doesn't really seem to be any.

Thanks for your help.

Well, there's nothing stopping you from cracking open the GECK and making one yourself.

I know it may seem daunting at first, but it's a fairly straightforward process once you get the hang of the controls and what to do.

As for pre-existing mods... I don't know- I never House Mods myself.

the minihideout (http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6394) is pretty nice, smalla nd functional. it adds some katans to the game which aren't too overpowered and a rifle you can retrieve with 100 science skill. this is the one i use.
the scarabaeus http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12849 is also pretty nice. it's a big hideout and works great as a base, especially if you have partners.

I'm using the same house mod - I'm not real happy with it, but out of all the mods I saw, it seemed to have the fewest massively overpowered god items. If you get the pre-war theme for it, you don't get cars and airplanes and all that other goofy stuff - you get a pool table and some couches and chairs in that area. Make sure you download the latest update for that mod (2-8-7 IIRC) if you do use it - the original version is very glitchy. The latest version cleans up a lot of the glitches, but I still get missing textures in certain areas from time to time.

I was going to delete the mod, but by now I've spent too much time decorating the place with the Feng Shui mod, plus I've got a ton of stuff I've scavenged from the Wastes in all the lockers and other containers. It's just too much trouble to get all that stuff out and start over again. On my next playthrough, I'm probably going to use the GECK and make my own house mod.

There's Princess Stomper Megaton House Extension available on the Nexus.

Well, I use http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11683. It's parked right next to the other Megaton house. You can use both or just have the new as the reward house. The other is just boarded up, or something. I don't know. I use both at the same time.

I also use http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5066. It may resemble the men's restroom on the outside, and as cramped inside, but it fits in anywhere and not filled with useless clutter. Everything has a purpose. Although, the terminal just inside the door could be a bit cheaty.

That's all I use at the moment.

Ah yes, Princess' house extensions are pretty good. I used to use her Tenpenny one.

I recommend http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1663. One of the best house mods I know of, though it is not in Megaton, but near Agatha's house and has a great view. Use the default version If you don't want to "cheat".

May I ask which mod that is? My main problem--perhaps my only problem--with the default Megaton house is that there are too few containers; I'd rather subdivide my stuff more. I guess the other is lack of display space for unique items.

Quick question: do you have to clean out the existing house to install the new one without losing everything? As you said, it's a lot of trouble to clean out a house.

This one -

I feel pretty much the same way you do about the default Megaton house. Too few storage containers and not enough display space. Plus, I wanted it to have a bathroom, an actual kitchen you could prepare meals in, plus a decent bed. If the Raiders at the MDPL Mass Relay Station can have nice beds with sheets and pillows, why does the Lone Wanderer have to settle for that grungy thing that comes standard with the house? B)

I got the mod very early on in my playthrough, so I didn't have a lot of stuff in the house yet when I installed it. And I cleared it out just to be safe, so I really can't answer your question. I would assume the worst, though, and figure that at a minimum anything in the containers would disappear.

Well... It's nowhere near Megaton, but how about http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12839? It has no overpowered loot, a questline that makes you think, and space for followers. Plus it looks cool, without breaking the post-apocalyptic feel.

Ah, thanks. I would make a save and then try the install...then presumably uninstall, reload, and schlep the stuff elsewhere for a bit.

[Edit] Upon looking at the description on Nexus: "the locker on the right hand side of the bobbleheadstand is removed (so BEFORE installing the mod, remove all items from that locker) and is replaced by a gun cabinet"

Coincidentally, I use that locker as my gun cabinet...

I to prefer the Default Yard, since I always go for the Mechanic Type Character!
And since it seems like a house that a creative Tinkerer Character would be able to build/Pull off.

If you want something minimal, there is also T3T's Better Megaton Storage. All it does is add more more lockers/safes/containers to the megaton house to make keeping your stuff organized better. I happen to like it a fair amount.

Down Under (which I made) is an option, but it may be more than you are looking for.

This.

I've used a lot of house mods and Down Under is the only one I've visited more than once.

Burger Boy Compound also fit most of your requirements. But it's in Paradise Falls and getting the key to it might cause a little problem.
Still I don't see any house that fell more like it should have been in the original game.

Oh dear, I screwed up.

That description is from the Better Megaton House and not from Megaton House and Theme Overhaul. I installed the former after stuffing all my weapons and ammo in the refrigerator (talk about cold steel!) As advertised it replaces that one locker with a gun cabinet. It also adds a footlocker between the other locker and the workbench, and it adds another gun cabinet up in the bedroom. I think that's all it does (unless I missed something), essentially adding two new storage containers. I think I'm OK for that for this (my first) playthrough, but I must say I'd really like sheets on the bed!!

I'm still considering clearing out the existing house and installing the Megaton House and Theme Overhaul. However, it would be a lot of work at this stage and I'm not sure I want to deal with some of the non-functional decor (though there is a patch to remove the airplane). Also, the comments on Nexus suggest that even the most recent version is a bit buggy, at least in terms of some unstable textures. Anyone here have experience with that?
