Reasons for or against riding Dragons

Post » Tue Jul 05, 2011 1:36 pm

My reasons for saying yes is: If you can kill a dragon why should you not be able to beat a dragon into submission and make it obey your will? Plus it’s a lot faster than a horse I don’t think I would fast travel if could ride a dragon from place to place. Try to be nice to each other :foodndrink:

Also Does anyone know how Alduin is controlling the other dragons (which I knew were smart but didn’t relies were as smart if not smarter than humans and the like  ) I know it’s more than likely a main plot point but was hoping there was something in lore about it.

I say no, because:
  • Dragons (in TES) are intelligent individuals not content to the mere rank of "mount".
  • Dragons are the enemy.

I think riding a dragon is too high fantasy for ES. And just because you can kill something doesn't mean you can make it your mount; I think dragons would rather die. Plus, having a flying mount would make traveling way to easy.

If you force a dragon to be your mount, what do you think would happen at certain altitude when your life deppends on him/her?

This. It's too World of Warcraft for a series like TES.

Plus, it devalues dragons as a whole if they can be reduced to mounts for the Dovahkiin to ride around.

And you can add cheesy, hackneyed, and Disneytastic to the roll of honour.
The dragons are returning in numbers, heralds of the end of time, the coming of Alduin the World Eater. Proud, powerful, and ferociously intelligent, of course one will give you a ride back to town so you can sell all that bandit armour.

Not to mention removing the sense of scale from the whole game. You could get around the whole map in seconds. Throat of the world? nah just flew over it.

Reasons against:

  • Map is far too small for it. Walking around on foot with moutains everywhere, the world will feel big. Flying from one end to the other in seconds, the world feels tiny.
  • Dragons should be an intelligent race, not animals you can ride around on like horses.

So riding dragons are too high fantasy but talking humanoid lizards and cats, shooting bolts of lightning fom your hands, and ancient wizards who live in giant mushrooms aren't? Kind of seems like an odd standard to me.

Still, I don't particularly want riding dragons either, and the reason is because dragons are supposed to be a credible threat to the world, not to mention intelligent beings that even get their own language, they shouldn't be degraded to the level of glorified horses, just because they're big and can fly doesn't mean they're willing to let you ride them.

I don't understand this obsession people have for riding Dragons. I just imagine this is something Bethesda reads and sighs and aggravated sigh.
I can't recall anywhere in the lore, and I could be wrong, that says that people ever rode dragons.
This may be a Viking inspired game but it surely isn't How To Train Your Dragon.

If you are slaying dragons, why would they let you ride on them?

I don't particularly care if riding dragons is in or not, but I defiately don't think it devalues or demeans them. Put it this way - do you think it's demeaning for a pilot to fly passengers somewhere? No? Because he gets paid. If the dragon got paid in some way (perhaps in some form of exotic food or other item), or did so as you had a close relationship with it, I don't see a problem with it. They may be all-powerful beasts, but that doesn't mean they'd necessarily refuse to take you somewhere. In fact they may think it demeans you, as they'll see that you are inferior to them, much like a human carrying a kitten.

I don't think a pilot would willingly fly a plane full of Al-Qaeda dangerously near the white house.

Just because they're intelligent, it doesn't mean they cannot be mounted.

You can make a deal with them, befriend one of them or something...

Still, I don't see it happening in the released game though (unless maybe it's a part of the main quest...)

That is the most bizarre anology. We know that not all dragons are hostile to you - I really have no idea what point you were trying to make.

Alduin is the Big Bad, and so are dragons. We probably won't find any dragons willing to become taxi's any time soon.
